ORDER OF WORSHIP Gathering Chime Prelude Andante Cantabile Couperin Welcome and Announcements (Please sign the Welcome Book and pass it to your neighbor.) Introit The Heavens are Telling Haydn *Call to Worship (* Please stand as you are able.) One: Look at the heavens! All: They are shouting the glory of God. One: The days and the nights declare the magnificence All: of God s creative works. Their voice goes through all the earth and their words reach the ends of the world. One: Let our words of praise be acceptable to you. All: Our Lord, our rock, our redeemer! *Hymn God of Great and God of Small (vv. 1-3) No. 19 *Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession You have called us, O God, and we have refused to listen; you have stretched out your hand and we have not taken it. We have taken what you have given us and used those gifts to hurt others and defy you. We have refused to be tamed by your wisdom. Forgive our inability to recognize you and live out the reality of your gospel. Give us the insight we need to understand your place in our lives so that our words and actions reflect the glory of God in the lives of others. In the name of Messiah we pray. Silent Confession 2

*Response Lord Have Mercy No. 576 *Assurance of God s Mercy *Response God of Great and God of Small (v. 4) No. 19 God of heaven and God of earth, God of death and God of birth, God of now and days before, God who reigns forevermore, alleluia, alleluia, praise be to your name. *Sharing the Peace of Christ (11:00 a.m. service) One: May the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you, All: and also with you. One: Let us share that peace with one another. Prayer for Illumination Scripture Readings Gospel: Mark 8:27-38 NT, pp. 43-44 One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Epistle: James 3:1-12 NT, p. 230 Sermon It Only Takes a Spark Mitzi Lesher-Thomas *Affirmation of Faith from Belonging to God: A First Catechism One: Who are you? All: I am a child of God. One: What does it mean to be a child of God? All: That I belong to God, who loves me. One: What makes you a child of God? All: Grace God s free gift of love that I do not deserve and cannot earn. 3

One: How do you thank God for this gift of love? All: I promise to love and trust God with all my heart. One: How do you love God? All: By worshiping God, by loving others, and by respecting what God has created. One: What does it mean that we are made in God s image? All: It means we are made to reflect God s goodness, wisdom and love. *Hymn Though I May Speak No. 693 Time with Our Children Offering Offertory Anthem Promise of Joy Martin Chancel Choir There is a flame in the shadows, there is a song in the night, There is a hope for tomorrow in even death there is life. We know that God is faithful. Our God is worthy of praise. We know his love is eternal. We are his children of grace. Joy comes in the morning. Glory comes with the dawn. Sunrise will find us singing. Tomorrow will bring song. Our night will surrender to gladness. Our fear will surrender to life. Joy comes in the morning; this is the promise of Christ. There is a rainbow in each teardrop, there is a peace in every storm, There is a stream in the desert, yes, there is hope in the Lord. We know that love will sustain us. We know in Christ we are found. We rest our faith in this promise, in every cross waits a crown. 4

*Doxology Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow 5

*Prayer of Dedication God, we hear and we respond to your words of wisdom, your words of call and life. May these gifts, not only of our money, but of our very selves our words, our thoughts, our actions be acceptable to you, and help spread your words of life and love. Amen. Prayers of Joy and Concern and the Lord s Prayer p.35 Lord in your goodness: Hear our praise; Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *Hymn Lord, Speak to Me That I May Speak (vv. 1-4) No. 722 *Benediction *Response Lord, Speak to Me That I May Speak (v. 5) No. 722 * Postlude The Heavens Declare the Glory of God Marcello After worship, the Officer of the Day will be available in the Narthex with the Ask Me sign to answer any visitor or member questions.
