Neighbors in Need The Neighbors in Need offering, which we will receive on October 21, supports the UCC s ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States of America. 2/3 of the offering is used by the UCC s Justice and Witness Ministries to fund a wide array of local and national justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. If you are able to visit the ucc.org website, search Justice and Witness to find our national Justice and Witness Ministries. Online you can find many resources, news updates, and action alerts on a broad spectrum of issues. Working with members of the UCC Justice and Peace Action Network, Justice and Witness continues its strong policy advocacy work on issues such as the federal budget, voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties, and environmental justice. One-third of the NIN offering supports the UCC s Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Today there are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These churches and their pastors are supported by CAIM. CAIM is also an invaluable resource for more than 1,000 individuals from dozens of other tribes and nations who are members of other UCC congregations in the U.S. Beginning Sunday, October 7th envelopes can be found in the church pew racks. Deadline for giving is Sunday, October 21st. NEED a Ride? If you need or want a ride to church on Sunday or for any of the various church events, the Membership Committee members invite you to give them a call, they are happy to provide transportation. A big THANK YOU to everyone who has served a PADS or BEDS PLUS meal as a mission of Immanuel over the last 20 years. This very important ministry is essential for the well-being of so many. Through it we have touched and enriched the lives of countless people. Guests at the serving site were always very appreciative and thankful for what we provided. Our members learned and had our lives enriched by the people we came to know. However, it has become increasingly difficult to find volunteers to honor this commitment. So, sadly, the Mission and Care Committee reached the difficult decision to discontinue regular monthly participation in this program. However, we encourage anyone and everyone who wishes to continue supporting this mission on their own to contact the program coordinator at Trinity Lutheran Church to volunteer your service Jim Buschbach @ 1-708-423-2350. We look forward to planning other opportunities for Immanuel s members to share their gift of time. Thank you again. MISSION AND CARE Just as the leaves change in the autumn season, the Mission and Care Committee is also changing the focus of Immanuel s mission, that is, for the months of October through December. Our focus will reflect the spirit of the season GIVING and SHAR- ING. In October, Immanuel s members will be asked to support the work of Together We Cope. Watch for the Christmas tree bedecked with tags. They ll ask you to purchase a gift for a boy or girl of a certain age. All gifts will be dedicated during worship on Sunday November 25 th. In November, as winter draws near, Mission and Care will be sponsoring a coat drive. These may be new or gently used. (Visit - Good Will 9321 S. Western; Neat Repeats 6602 W. 111 th ; Unique Thrift Shop 3041 W. 159 th.) On December 1 st, Immanuel members will travel to Libertyville to participate in a pack event for Feed My Starving Children. This Christian non-profit organization, founded in 1987, provides nutritionally complete meals specially formulated for malnourished children. It touches children around the world in North, Central, and South America; the Middle East; the Caribbean; Asia; Africa; and Europe. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. Psalm 146:7 All Joyful Noise money collected during these months will be designated to Feed My Starving Children. Please give prayerful consideration as to how you can support these worthwhile projects. *************************************************************************************************** 4

TOTENFEST Sunday November 25, 2018-10:00 am Totenfest is a German word that means Feast of the Dead or Festival for the Dead. The Evangelical church in 19th century Prussia observed this day to remember not only the war dead, but also church members who had died in the preceding year. Totenfest is traditionally celebrated on the final Sunday of the church year, just before Advent. Immanuel UCC has retained this part of the tradition. We remember those who died within the past year, we speak their name aloud in prayer, we light a candle for them and give thanks to God for the life they shared with us. We have also added the names of those born in our community during the preceding year, thus celebrating the full cycle of birth and death. Family members are invited to attend Totenfest. Anyone interested in having a loved one or a friend remembered on this special day, please notify the church office or Pastor Michelle Hot Shots basketball program will begin in January 2019. Watch for the updated registration information and downloadable forms available in Novem- 5
