It is a place of prayer & pilgrimage with: Perpetual adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary Frequent celebration of the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Reconciliation Integrated formation of the person (spiritual, moral, intellectual and emotional)

Page 2 Our Lady of Peace September 18, 2016 Dear Parishioners, Since I have arrived here at Our Lady of Peace, I have had the pleasure to meet so many kind and faith-filled people. In just these few days, I have realized the wonderful mix and balance of people that comprise the parishioner population here. There are many who are have been here since the days of the pear orchard, while still many others are arriving for the first time. There is a rich mixture of people from different cultural backgrounds and social upbringings. People of all ages with different gifts and talents, and one could seemingly continue on and on about the varieties that one discovers here. One who looks at all of this with only a cursory glance they may ask: What is the cause of this? Or what common factor captivates such an uncommon mix? For the person who penetrates beyond the surface, it is quite evident that there are important bonds of unity that are found here: the Eucharist, His Mother Mary and the church. This is a wonderfully simple reality, or perhaps more precisely, it is wonderfully Catholic! Here, by the Eucharist, Mary, and the Church, we are drawn, nourished & fortified, and ultimately sent back out into the world. These three things serve as our foundation and bond of unity. In the Eucharist, enjoy a unity, a communion, procured between the faithful and Christ present in the Eucharist, on the principle that as St. Paul expresses: Those who eat the sacrifices are partners in the altar (1 Cor 10: 18). In Mary, Bl. Paul VI explains it well when he says that Mary, the Mother of the Church, is the banner of unity and stimulus for perfect brotherhood among all Christians. He points to her, in part, because she is the model of perfect love toward God and toward our fellow beings. (Signum Magnum, no. 7) The church is one because of her source (the trinity), her founder (the Word Incarnate), and her soul (the Holy Spirit). (CCC 813) The catechism also explains that the church has visible signs of her unity: the one creed we profess; the common celebration of divine worship, especially of the sacraments; and apostolic succession through the sacrament of Holy Orders. (CCC 815) In a more particular way, as a parish we must also be aware of the common mission that unites our sacrifices, acts of generosity, service and worship. This important, yet easily overlooked, detail can be found each and every Sunday on the front page of our Parish Bulletin. It is our Parish Mission Statement, which reads: Our Lady of Peace is a church and shrine dedicated to the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls. It is a place of prayer & pilgrimage with: Perpetual adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament; devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary; frequent celebration of the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Reconciliation; and integrated formation of the person (spiritual, moral, intellectual and emotional). I would like to spend the next few weeks considering and highlighting the significance of the parish mission statement and its working parts. It provides a concrete vision for each and every individual as well as different ministries and groups. This is how we come to a fuller understanding of our identity as disciples rather than just benefactors or supporters or volunteers. There is a radical difference between someone who understands their call to discipleship and stewardship versus someone who is donates their time, talent or treasure. They are both good, without question; however, one is properly speaking Christian because Christ calls us to be his disciples. Let us not be afraid to respond to his call, laying down our lives, taking up our cross and following him. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, Pray for us! Fr.
