From the Senior Minister LOVE CHRIST.LOVE OTHERS.SERVE Summer Splash and SonTreasure Island are HERE! This is the time of year when everyone is thinking Vacation Bible School. VBS has always been an exciting time for our CCCC family, and Susan Critelli and her team of volunteers are doing their very best to make it the same this summer. If you haven t already found a place to volunteer July 26-30, PLEASE get in touch with Susan or the church office. We can t emphasize how much our success in children s ministry and specifically in VBS means this year. As we strive to reach out to young families, teens, and kids, we need EVERYONE of us helping out where we can. I certainly know that summer time also means a lot of people are on summer vacation and away from home. If that describes you and your family, we certainly understand. But if you are in town at the end of July, please don t wait until then to let Susan know you can help out. This year we will need people in every area stretching themselves to do things they may have never done before. So if you are saying to yourself, I can t do that, forget that excuse. God can use you and so can we. We just need you to be willing and available. We also need you to be excited about VBS with your friends, families, co-workers, neighbors, loan officers, massage therapist, that guy that frowns at you at the deli, ANYONE and EVERYONE you come in contact with who may have children (even if they don t have children you can invite them to church and VBS. We will find something for them to do.) Let s invite them. We have never been poised better than we are right now to minister to young people. Pray that God will draw families to us, and pray that God will use YOU some way to be a part of Summer Splash! In His Service, Allen G. Communication From the Leadership Soccer, French Fries, Apple Pie and Toyota John DeLorean, then General Motors Vice-President, was quoted in 1971 when speaking of his new, aluminum block, 90-horsepower, subcompact, Motor Trend Car of the Year, said that it would outhandle almost any European sports car including acceleration and this car was widely thought of as enjoyable to drive, quiet and was the best handling passenger car ever built. I grew up without a TV in my house, but I even knew the song specifically written by James Hartzell to promote this car and when I mention the words Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet, I would bet that at least half of you are singing that little jingle in your head as well. A lot has changed since the Vega was introduced and finished production just six years later secondary to the number of critical safety flaws that tarnished GM s longstanding reputation. I haven t seen a Vega in years, but I would bet that several of you have great memories of the good ol days in your Vega, windows down, engine sputtering and transmission bulking, with the smell of burnt oil in the air. I know I do. The other memories I have of childhood include those other things that James Hartzell wrote about. I spent afternoons playing baseball in the field with the neighbor kids and ghost runners. Hot Dogs were my favorite food. I fried them in the skillet and they were good! Church dinners always included Aunt Mary s apple pie and I always got the largest piece--until that time she changed up the dessert and I got gooseberry instead! Now, I can t get my kids to eat hot dogs. Kids don t play in the lot down the block because we are worried about all the bad things that could happen. Real church dinners are a thing of the past and Aunt Mary has passed away. I haven t owned a Chevy in years. It still doesn t mean that I don t have fond memories, though. That s a nice story, but what does it have to do with Capital City Christian Church? We are officially leaving the period of healing. We are entering the phase of growth. There were some ideas (I ll call them Vegas) that we just don t see anymore because they didn t live up to their billing (door-to-door, sidewalk preacher, fear-mongering preaching). There are church practices that have old names like VBS (Honda Accord) that can be updated every year and as long as the church supports them and shows themselves friendly, they work. However, the new way to get people into church is a classic (1949 Cadillac Series 62) and that is authentic Christianity and being friendly! We have unanimously called a Family Minister who will help minister to families and children. The future of our church depends on attracting families and making God so compelling through our actions that it competes with all the other distractions in the world. Going back to Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet, John Piper, one of my favorite theologians, says, The greatest enemy of hunger for God is not poison but apple pie. It is not the banquet of the wicked that dulls our appetite for heaven, but endless nibbling at the table of the world. Let s prayerfully enter this phase of growth with support, friendliness and authentic Christianity that reaches those in today s world. The United States is changing: Let s not miss the mark by shooting for Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet when it is really Soccer, French Fries, Apple Pie and Toyota. As that Oldsmobile commercial used to say: This isn t your Grandparent s car. Wes Scoles MD Lead Elder This Month we Welcome Keith, Beth, Jackson and Lincoln Warren! Keith is our new Family Life Minister and we are excited to have him and his family join us at Capital City Christian Church. Keith comes to us from Illinois. He is a graduate of St. Louis Christian College where he received his Bachelor of Science in Music Ministry and Bible in May 2010. He met and married the love of his life, Beth, while at St. Louis Christian College. Keith and Beth have two boys, Jackson who will be 4 in October and Lincoln who turns 2 this month. As CCCC strives to impact more families and students with the love of Christ, Keith and his family are a huge answer to prayer and we are proud to add them to our ministry staff at Capital City Christian Church.
