Johnson 1959 Harold Webster Lance Reasor 1955 1960 Lance Reasor qualified in 1960 on the USS Sterlet (SS-392) Lance was introduced at the May meeting to all of us that had, forgotten who he was and after showing his ID he was given his Holland Club certificate. Lance was also instrumental in getting our base started, serving as the first base commander, bringing the USSVI National Convention to Duluth in 2002, and presently serving as our base COB. Lance serving as Chief Cook at Silver Bay Veterans Home Picnic As members of the Western Lake Superior Base: We Salute You! Attention ALL members! Do not neglect to VOTE for your USSVI candidate of choice. There are also important issues to voice your opinion including an amendment concerning new Holland Club members. Vote on-line or mail in ballot from Submariner Magazine Please check the USSVI website to make sure that your personal data, qual boat and qual year are correct. If not let Al Pittsley know and he can update your data for you.

G R EENBBOA R D Page 3 The USSVI Scorpion Base hosted the Central Region Conference in Sioux Falls, SD on June 25 th -27 th at the Sheraton. About 21 SubVets many with their spouse were in attendance. Wayne Standerfer travelled the furthest having come from the Dallas Texas area where he serves as the Dallas Base Commander and the Central Region District 4 Commander. Presently, he is also a candidate for the Central Region Director. Carl Schmidt is the current Central Region Director but will be vacating the position as he is a candidate for National Commander. As you might imagine there were many reminders to vote for the USSVI officers and to go back to our own bases and remind everyone there to vote for the officers of their choice before the cutoff on 23 August 2010. Paper ballots will be in the Submariner magazine for those without internet access but certainly the desired method would be to go to the USSVI.org website and vote there. David Farran, the (Central Region District 3 Commander) led the discussion focusing on our purpose as an organization and directing us to the Creed as the primary reason for gathering together. Not just to remember those who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their Country. But that we should be motivated by their sacrifices to be better citizens and accomplish things that honor the fallen and benefit the survivors. Our common heritage as Submariners is our bond. L-R, Carl Schmidt, David Farran, Wayne Standerfer, and Bob Kentner Mike Neuroth Captain Neutron and Tim Madden of the Scorpion Base provided some lite entertainment. Lorri and Bob Kentner: Lorri leads the Subvettes for the Nebraska Base and Bob is the CRD3 Vice Commander

GREENBOARD Standing by our Members: Page 4 Remembering Randy Rutowski For those of you that were part of the early years of Western Lake Superior Submarine Base Randy Rutowski should elicit a vivid memory of a relatively quiet but strongly opinionated individual. He was one of the original founding members of our base and the first membership secretary. When the City of Duluth passed the no smoking ordinance for restaurants Randy took it personally and determined to boycott Duluth. He even refused to attend our meetings if they were in Duluth and couldn t be talked out of it. We did see Randy at our annual service day at the Silver Bay Veterans Home and so we will miss him this year! Randy Rutowski (1941-2010) More Wildhurst Lodge & Campground News... http://www.wildhurstlodge.com You can now find us on Facebook You may be wondering what is WILDHURST all about. While trying to gather information on Randy I discovered this website with a tribute to him. After emailing the owners I received a phone call from LeRoy Teschendorf. He and his wife Colleen have been good friends with Randy for 20 years and have been very involved in caring for him through his health problems in recent years. LeRoy has taken the responsibility to get Randy to the doctor and to the VA Hospital. LeRoy told me that Randy was extremely proud of his submarine service having qualified on the USS John Marshall (SSBN 611) in 1963. Randy has a son that lives in Texas and has 2 grandchildren. MEMORIAL SERVICE The Teschendorfs are planning a memorial service for Randy at the Wildhurst Lodge on August 6 th. See their website for details or call them at 218-353-7337.

GREENBOARD Page 5 Our April 10 th meeting was held at the Rustic Rock Chop House in Evelyth, MN. This turned out to be a great decision since it gave members that live too far from Duluth an opportunity to participate and connect with the rest of us. For some this was their first meeting since joining years ago. Don & Jan Messner were able to join us after a long absence. Don of course continues to be very active as a HAM radio operator and stays in touch with many veterans all over. It was apparent that Don is still pursuing his study of submarine history and was very passionate as he shared his findings on the U-Boats of WWII. Betty and Ron Harri drove down from Ely to be with us. As always they are keenly interested in other people and continue to be quite active in body and mind. Ron qualified on the USS Cabezon (SS-334) in 1946 and has the distinct honor of being our only WWII veteran. William Lilya joined us for the first time. He lives just up the road in Virginia and is a neighbor to Walt & Alice Haglund. William qualified on the USS Pickerel (SS-524) in 1950
