South Dakota and Wyoming Family Vacation June 2009 I decided to write about my family vacation to tell about some of the cool places in Wyoming and South Dakota that we experienced. We explored some scenic byways, drove along many Blue Ribbon Trout Streams and visited a few National Parks & Monuments. One of the highlights was learning more about my family history at Martin s Cove where we pulled handcarts at the LDS church visitor s center. Itinerary Sat. Saturday We left Boise early and it rained most of the way to Idaho Falls. We stopped at Craters of the Moon National Monument along the way to see the moonscape type landscape. That afternoon we took the kids to Bear World. They got to see all the large mammals of the Rocky Mountains. The highlights were the Grizzlies, Black Bears, Wolves and an albino Elk. Sunday We drove from Idaho Falls to Lander, WY over the Centennial Scenic Byway. We spent the majority of the day in Teton National Park where we toured the visitor centers and enjoyed the scenery on a few nature walks. The Mountain scenes were magnificent. We continued our way over the beautiful Wyoming Centennial Scenic Byway where we saw Moose, Deer, Trumpeter Swans and the Wind River Range where I ll be hiking with my brother in August. The eastern slopes of the Wind Rivers are swept by wind keeping the slopes available for winter grazing for Bighorn Sheep. It is the largest herd of Bighorn Sheep in the lower 48 and many sheep are taken from here to establish herds in other locations around the west. We also stopped at the grave of Sacajawea on the Indian reservation just outside Lander. It was a neat experience to see the grave of a prominent lady they learned about in school. 2

Monday Monday was the longest day of the trip as we drove from Lander, WY to Custer, SD. We spent half the day at Martin s Cove where we learned stories about the handcart pioneers that crossed the plains on their way to Utah. Early snows trapped the Willie and Martin handcart companies on the Wyoming plains until help arrived from rescue parties in Utah. Many people suffered and died including one of my great Grandmas. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a visitor center that describes the events that took place. They also allow you to pull handcarts up to Martin s Cove where missionaries will tell you stories about different pioneers. My Mother-in-law made the girls bonnets which added to the experience. It definitely hit home to my family and I how much we should appreciate our forefathers and their sacrifices they made for us. It was a very spiritual experience and one of the highlights of our trip. It was a great experience for my children. Tuesday Tuesday was an enjoyable and memorable day as we experienced Custer State Park and Mt Rushmore. Custer State park allows you to go for some scenic drives in the Black Hills while experiencing wildlife close up similar to Yellowstone. The highlights of the day were the lighting ceremony at Mt Rushmore and feeding the Burrows. For me, it was also my hike to Harney Peak in the Black Elk Wilderness. We started by driving the wildlife loop and spotted Buffalo, Turkey, Coyotes, Prairie Dogs, Antelope and the Burrows. While driving the loop, I gave my wife the signal to hand me the bag of chips. I stopped along the roadway and allowed Burrows to walk up and stick their heads in the van to eat the chips out of my hand. The girls quickly screamed and moved to the other side of the van. I couldn t believe the fun surprise and excitement that this created. As the girls warmed up to the animals I rolled down all the windows which greatly amplified the energy level again as Burrows were sticking their heads in from both sides. After the girls found it was safe, they all got out of the van and fed and petted the Burrows which were their favorite part of the trip along with swimming at the hotels. 5

We continued our journey on some other neat roadways in the park to and from Mt Rushmore. Mt Rushmore was a patriotic experience for the girls just as Martins Cove was a spiritual experience and Sacajawea s grave a historical experience. 7

We walked the pathways during the day and returned that night for the lighting ceremony. The lighting ceremony consisted of a Park Ranger telling about the four president s lives and a video that made you proud to be an American. Lights were then turned on so that you could see the monument in the dark. It ended as we honored the Veterans in the crowd. Before the lighting ceremony, we went back to our hotel to eat and swim. While the girls swam and ate I talked my wife into letting me hike to Harney Peak (7,242 ). It is just under 7 miles roundtrip and a 1000 climb in elevation from the trailhead at Sylvan Lake. Sylvan Lake was spectacular in and of itself with many people fishing its scenic shores. Harney Peak is the highest peak in South Dakota and the highest peak east of the Rockies and west of the Pyrenees. It is also a sacred site to the Lakota Sioux Indians. From the top you can see Mt Rushmore and see where the Black Hills end and the plains begin. You can see five states on a clear day (Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and of course South Dakota). I had to run the trail through the Black Elk Wilderness since I told my wife I d only be gone a couple hours. The highlight was reaching the tower at Harney Peak and getting startled by a couple of Mountain Goats that I spooked while running. 8

Wednesday We drove to Badlands National Park and saw more Buffalo, Antelope and Prairie Dogs. The highlight was being able to see Bighorn Sheep skipping around the cliffs. There were some neat rock formations but it didn t take us long to see the park. Badlands National Park Later in the day we stopped at the National Fish Hatchery in Spearfish, SD to begin our short northern Black Hills scenic drive. We drove the scenic canyon of waterfalls and looped back around to Deadwood. Deadwood is an old western town famous for Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. It was there that we watched a gunfight on the western street front. We spent the night in Sturgis which is famous for its motor bike rally where thousands gather in August. There is Harley Davidson memorabilia everywhere. Thursday Cody, WY was the destination but along the way we stopped at Devils Tower National Monument and skirted the Cloud Peak Wilderness on the Cloud Peak Skyway Scenic Byway. The girls loved the Cody Night Rodeo that evening. I would also like to return someday and visit the museums but we didn t have time and it didn t sound like fun with all the girls. 10

Devils Tower National Monument 11

There are three alpine regions of Wyoming that I want to hike and I got to skirt all three on this trip. I saw the peaks of the Tetons, Wind Rivers and now the Cloud Peaks. Looking into the Cloud Peak Wilderness along the Cloud Peak Skyway Scenic Byway I also drove along many Blue Ribbon streams before the trip was over including the SF Snake, Bighorn, Shoshone, Madison and of course Yellowstone s other great fisheries. Warning: It is not healthy to make such a trip without a fly rod! Friday The day started out on one of the most scenic drives I have ever driven. The Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway drives through some spectacular landscapes and one of the highest concentrations of Grizzlies in the lower 48. Yellowstone was great but my girls had seen all the animals so it took some of the excitement out of Yellowstone. No Bears or Wolves this time! We drove the majority of the lower loop to see highlights such as Yellowstone Lake, Upper & Lower Falls, Norris Geyser Basin, Lower Geyser Basin, the Paint Pots and Old Faithful. Yellowstone was a great end to a great trip! 12
