From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, All Saints: We begin this emotion-laden month with the solemnity of All Saints (All Hallows). Having completed the cultural celebration of the Eve of Hallows as Halloween, here we are celebrating the holy feast of all saints, canonized and not canonized, known and unknown. Originally the feast began when there were so many martyrs that there was a felt need to honor them. It then became a way of honoring all saints, all holy men and women, who have reached the beatific vision of God and are now safe in the very heart of God, even if they are not officially declared as saints by the Church. I would like to think that some or many of our own family members have been privileged to become saints and have attained the life of perfection in heaven; that they have joined Mary, our blessed mother, the angels, and saints; that they are beholding the face of God for eternity with Jesus and the Holy Spirit. What a blessed state! What a glorious state of life! This feast invites us to thank God for all the marvelous deeds God in Jesus has done in the lives of all these saints. We feel a deep sense of gratitude and joy. This feast also reminds us that we are all destined to be saints. We are all called to holiness. Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect, is the challenge. Be holy. Do holy. It is not easy, though. We are pulled and pushed by external and internal forces and allurements. We are tempted and dazzled by all sorts of things in the world. To seek holiness in the midst of bewildering things and choices, it s not at all easy. That s why Jesus walks with us and gives us his Spirit to lead and guide us so that we may keep running the race, knowing that in all our endeavors, struggles, and failures, we are graced and strengthened in this pilgrimage of life. All Souls: We commemorate all those who have been called to God. We very specially think of those in our own families who have gone before us. We hold their memory sacred. We loved them in life, we continue to love them in death. Life is changed, not ended. Love is stronger than death. We bring our love, faith, and prayers to support them in their journey of purification and attainment of perfection with God. It has always been a tradition in the Catholic faith to visit graves on this day. So let s make time for that. As we stand at their graves, as we may shed tears and be filled with loss and grief, let us know that God will wipe away all tears and grant them eternal peace and fulfillment. It is also an occasion for us to think of life and death. Awareness of death can make life more precious and beautiful. Against the background of death, life takes on great urgency and acute significance. Because of death, we have to live better lives. Because of death, we have to become the people God wants us to be in this life. Because of death, we need to become more authentic disciples and apostles of Jesus. Because of death, love becomes not only necessary but also urgent. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace! Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. Repair My Church: We have launched Repair My Church (RMC) project to renovate our St. Veronica church building. Please be generous in your donation to this project. The total cost of it is estimated to be $250,000. For the first phase of three jobs --- painting, carpet, and refurbishing of pews --- will cost $160,000 and be done in summer of 2016, God willing. Thank you in advance for your spirit of stewardship and generosity in taking care of God s house at St. Veronica. Make checks payable to: St. Veronica RMC Project. Abraham Lincoln s Beard: When Grace Bedell Billings, an 11-year-old girl from Westfield, N.Y., first came upon a photo of Abraham Lincoln, she was unimpressed. He would look better if he wore whiskers, she told her mother. And I mean to write and tell him so. On October 15, 1860, she did just that. All the ladies like whiskers, her dispatch read, and they would tease their husbands to vote for you and then you would be president. Mr. Lincoln worried that some would think his beard a piece of silly affect[at] ion. Within a matter of weeks, however, Mr. Lincoln was sporting a modest chinstrap beard. And by the time he began traveling to Washington for his inauguration, Mr. Lincoln s chin curtain was in full bloom. Along the journey, Mr. Lincoln stopped in Westfield, where he requested to meet with Ms. Billings. Look at my whiskers, he told the girl. I have been growing them for you. (Source: NY Times; 10/15/15) Catholic Joke: A priest was preparing a man for his long day s journey into night. Whispering firmly, the priest said, Denounce the devil! Let him know how little you think of his evil! The dying man said nothing. The priest repeated his order. Still the dying man said nothing. The priest asked, Why do you refuse to denounce the devil and his evil? The dying man said, Until I know where I'm heading, I don't think I ought to aggravate anybody. Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

All Saints October Census 2015 Results As reported to the Archdiocese of San Francisco, the average mass attendance for the month of October was: 5:00 p.m. - 229 10:00 a.m. - 335 7:00 a.m. - 134 11:30 a.m. - 300 8:30 a.m. - 204 6:00 p.m. (Spanish) - 266 Special thanks to all of St. Veronica s ushers who took the count each week! Reflecting on the Word In the Catholic tradition, heaven is envisioned as an eminently social place. It is not a matter of the isolated soul alone with God for eternity; rather, part of the joy of the saints in God s kingdom is the joy that they feel in being with each other. St. Catherine of Siena, the 14thcentury Italian mystic, wrote that the saints rejoice and exult, sharing each other s goodness with loving affection. She states that when a soul reached eternal life, all souls shared in that soul s goodness, and likewise shared theirs, experiencing new freshness in their exultation that she described as mirthfulness, jubilation, and gladness (The Dialogue, chapter 41). So the great multitude of which the book of Revelation speaks rejoices not simply in knowing God, but in knowing the incredible varieties of goodness that God s grace has made possible in human beings. The saints bring with them the particular gifts that God s grace has poured into their lives and then they share those gifts of holiness with each other, so that each may delight in the goodness of others. Most people know that Halloween originated as the eve of All Saints day - All Hallows Eve. Some parents most vivid memories of Halloween are of the point after the treats have been collected and the children gather at someone s house, dump out their bags on the floor, and begin trading: sour candies exchanged for peanut butter cups, dark chocolate for milk chocolate. What was most remarkable was that this exchange was characterized by great excitement and happiness - not just the excitement and happiness of trading for preferred candy, but the excitement and happiness of being together with friends and of both giving and receiving. To borrow from Catherine of Siena, it was an occasion of mirthfulness, jubilation and gladness. What more appropriate way to celebrate the saints than to joyfully share our gifts with one another? This is what the saints do in eternity. For prayerful consideration and discussion What is the particular form of holiness that God is calling me to in my life? How do I conceive of heaven? What experience on earth do I think gives the best picture of the life of the saints in heaven? - from Living the Word News from Around the Archdiocese Essay Contest Opportunities Announced The Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Young Men s Institute have announced its annual essay contests, open to Catholic youth attending public and private schools.
