July 9, 2017 Our History: SAVAGE STREET Church of Christ The Savage Street Church of Christ began on March 4, 1923 at 6th and H Streets. After sometime on Evelyn Street, we moved to our present location on March 20, 1960. Join us in 2023 when we celebrate our 100th anniversary! A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner Back in the 1980s, I struggled with some problems in the church. A sister in the congregation, cut something out of a church bulletin, and gave it to me. It said, Smooth seas never made a skillful sailor. I think the original quotation is what I have put for the title of this article, and it is an English proverb. How do mariners, sailors, become skilled? Someone has to teach them, and then they have to get out on the open water and test what they have been taught. That testing includes sailing the peaceful and calm seas, and the storm-tossed seas at night as well. How can the sailor achieve great skill if he never faces life-threatening challenges? So it is with life, regardless of what we do. Everyone experiences challenges that they believe they cannot beat. Yet, others have made it, so you press on, often because you have no other choice. Later, even many years later, you see how those extreme challenges made you grow and gain skill that you never would have acquired without those challenges. Then you see others, especially younger people, struggle, and you urge them, because they want to give up, and you know how that feels, but you want them to know that even as you made it through your challenge, so they will too, if they just exercise patience and hang on for dear life. Sometimes we have to pray as King Jehoshaphat did when he faced a mighty power, O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You (2 Chronicles 20.12). In the king s case, the Lord heard and defeated a powerful enemy. Jehoshaphat put his total trust in God and it paid off. Try it the next time a situation or person challenges you beyond your own wits to solve. CHERYL S CORNER-MALNUTRITION IN AFRICA Unfortunately, malnutrition is seen frequently among our African people. There are basically two types. One is called "Dry" malnutrition or "Marasmus". The other is "wet" malnutrition or "Kwashiorkor". the challenge of africa "Dry" malnutrition/"marasmus" is were the child/person does not get enough of any kind of food. This would be what many people call starvation. The signs of this type of malnutrition are thinning hair, face of an old man, always hungry, very thin, very underweight and potbelly. "Wet" malnutrition/"kwashiorkor" is were the child/person does not get enough protein (body building foods). Signs of this type of malnutrition include swollen "moon" face, sores and peeling skins, swollen hands and feet, loss of color in hair and skin, and wasted muscles. Paulo is an 18 month old who presented with his great-grandmother to one of my mobile clinics. I was very sad to see his condition. He weighed 5 kg (11 lb) and looked like a little old man. His mother had died and his great-grandmother was attempting to care for him. He has now been in the hospital receiving high calorie, high protein solutions for three weeks. He is much brighter with more energy and looks much better with a weight of 6 kg (13.2 lb). Below are before and after pictures. Is it amazing the difference that three weeks of good nutrition can make! Here is our challenge...we see an average of 10-15 malnourished patients per month and do follow-up visits and provide nutritional foods for the next month or two. Those with malnutrition are usually from extremely poor circumstances. If they cannot afford food, then they also cannot afford a big hospital bill. Most malnourished patients will spend 3 weeks in the hospital with a bill of around 250,000 tsh ($113.00). To someone who may have $1 per day, this amount is completely over-whelming. We need funds to make sure we have food, medical supplies and financial assistance for these children. I am setting up a separate account at NYA church of Christ for malnutrition. Please help us raise funds to help these children and families. 4

Control Your Tongue If your words will be a poor reflection of the Lord: For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth ; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously (1 Peter 2.21 23).
