Padre s Corner August 26, 2018 Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time Words possess power that span the centuries and countries that exist within that time domain, with certain thoughts continuing to exist in the written annals of human history while most expressed thoughts are destined for the dust pan. Paul Revere was an American patriot, silversmith, and engraver who lived from December 21, 1734 through May 10, 1818 entirely in Boston, Massachusetts. He had sixteen children with two wives, each of whom died before he did (Sarah in 1773 and Rachel in 1813). His later role as a militia officer to watch movements of the British military is what would make his words famous, though most of the words and thoughts of that period of time from others are frozen by the passage of time into oblivion. Puritan in religion Revere was fairly prosperous until England went into recession after the Seven Year War, 1756-1763. Two years later was the Stamp Act which devastated the economy of the Boston area. On April 18, 1775 Revere uttered by horseback the famous phrase known nearly 250 years later: The Regulars (British) are coming out. After the Revolutionary War was over, Revere prospered once more in the economy of copper, cannon, and church bell products. He supported Alexander Hamilton in establishing a banking system for the United States before death, where he was buried in Christ Church Cemetery near Charter Street in Boston. Revere and his words would later be popularized by the 1861 poem of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ( Listen, my children, and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere, on the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five; Hardly a man is now alive who remembers that famous day and year. ), 1958 U.S. postage stamp, and the middle 1960 s group called Paul Revere and the Raiders (who I saw back in June during the Happy Together Tour including the Turtles and Association). While in Boston back in April, I came across a postcard that did a silhouette of Revere over modern Boston. The purpose of the Boston excursion was to attend a Dave Ramsey Smart Conference at the Agganis Arena in Boston University, quite near the streets that once bellowed those sacred words of Paul Revere. There were a series of lectures by experts in the fields of family dynamics, boundary issues, youth spirituality, financial legacies to leave family and country in a better place, and finding the sweet spot of life God has destined for each of us. There were certain words expressed there that will live on in my mind, and via the social media venues readily available to all. Rachel Cruze: Give a little until you can give a lot as a heart and value issue. Ken Coleman: Everyone has a unique role they can play and must play. Most dread Sunday nights and Monday mornings. Your sweet spot is at the intersection of your greatest talent and your greatest passion. Chris Hogan: If you plan for retirement right, you ll have two things you never had before - time and money. Retirement is an opportunity. Do not leave it to chance. Doctor Meg Meeker: Kids need to know their parents love them, not as a coach but as a leader. Doctor Henry Cloud: A boundary is a property line that defines sowing and reaping. We are wired to be connected. We medicate in addictions which are not real. Dave Ramsey: Passion occurs in the midst of hard work. If you plant nothing you get dirt. If you plant stupid you get desperate. Pour good clean things in and it displaces the toxic waste. In a time of tremendous political and social discord in the United States, we can invite words from the past to boost our collective morale in the present. Appomattox, Virginia was the setting for positive focus and change on April 9, 1865. General Robert E. Lee approached a brick home on his horse Traveler and two of his Confederate staff. Major (and future president) General Ulysses S. Grant emerged from this definitive house surrounded by Union soldiers on the lawn. Both raised their hats to each other as the song Auld Lang Syne was played by the 198th Pennsylvania Infantry. Ernie Price, park ranger and education director of the Appomattox National Park, said in an article by Salena Zito in the New York Post : Grant knew that the Confederate soldiers from that moment on were going to be US citizens again. Instead of placing them in prisons in the North he sends them home. His reasoning is: The sooner the South s economy rebounds, the sooner the country can reconcile, so he paroles them. Between the first shots of the Civil War at Fort Sumter in April of 1861 and the death of Abraham Lincoln just a few days after Appomattox on April 15, over 800,000 soldiers died from fighting and disease. As Zito records: Grant introduced Lee to his staff, including Lt. Col. Ely Parker, a Seneca Indian, who later recalled their exchange. It s good to see one real American here today. Lee told him. General, we are all Americans today. Parker replied. Saint Vincent Ferrer (1350-1419) once expressed from a Dominican retreat house near Valencia, Spain: Each sinner in your congregation should feel moved as though you were preaching to him alone. Your words should sound as though they were coming, not from a proud or angry soul, but from a charitable and loving heart. Be the words from 1775, 1865, or 2018 the net result must be the same: inspiring, affirming, merciful, and understanding. Great thoughts for two parishes merging into one church. Father Bill

TODAY TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel and told them if it did not please them to serve God, then they must decide who they would serve. The people claimed that God had brought them out of slavery and protected them on their journey. Therefore, they would serve, the Lord their God, and no one else. Second Reading: Ephesians 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32 Husbands and wives should love one another as Christ loved the Church. They should nourish and care for each other as Christ cared for the church. Through the union between the two, they become one. Gospel: John 6:60-69 Many of Jesus' followers were still disturbed by his teaching of the living bread, which they could not yet fully understand. Jesus explained that the Spirit gives life, and flesh is unimportant. Some of the disciples decided to leave. Jesus asked if the Twelve also wanted to leave. Although they do not completely understand yet, they have enough faith in Jesus to stay because they believe he is God's holy one.
