Bismiallah 6 th October 2012 Tafseer of Surah Qamar class 3 We make dua that Allah Subahaanawatha'aala make it easy for us to understand and act on what we are learning when pondering the Quran. One of the things that will prevent us from this is our sins so we need to make isthigfaar all the time. To continue Surah Qamar from where we stopped - v7 We said in the previous classes that the main topic of focus in this surah is on the DISBELIEVERS. The reason they disbelieve and belie is because they are FOLLOWING THEIR DESIRE even if all the signs come to them. it is for this reason that they don t believe. The perfect example is Firaun (pharaoh).he is the HEAD or worst of all the disbelievers In Surah Taha 20:56 Allah Subahaanawatha'aala says و د أ ر ء ا ذب و أ And indeed We showed him [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] all Our Ayat (Signs and Evidences), but he denied and refused. (56 Allah Subahaanawatha'aala didn t even give him a chance for repentance in the end of his life because whataver ayat Firaun was sent he belied it. and he was sent MANY proofs. we too should ask Allah Subahaanawatha'aala to make it easy for us to believe and accept HIS AYAAT Allah Subahaanawatha'aala advises prophet sallallahualayhi'wasallam how to deal with people who belie the ayaat- he tells him (sallallahualayhi'wasallam ) to withdraw from such people. v 6 8 MOTIVATE US not to belie the signs.they talk of the DAY OF JUDGEMENT listening to Kalamullah v6-8 about the HORRORS of the Day of Judgement for people who belied in life, are a means to make a person stay on the straight path. V 8. %$ ط " ن إ ٱداع ول ٱ - ر ون ھ ذ ا و م * ( ر Hastening towards The caller, the disbelievers will say: "This is a hard Day." (8) $% is form ahthaa like someone looking down, hastening and REALLY HUMILIATED ط " ن This is about people who belied and followed their desire On the Day of Judgement, Allah Subahaanawatha'aala will make them SUBMIT by force. We all need to submit to Allah and it is better for us to SUBMIT willingly here in this life The people who belied Allah in the life of the DUNIYA have their necks DOWN in humiliation on the DOJ. $% ط " ن And we also see fear in this word

means hastening towards a CALLER إ ٱداع In life we had a call the CALL OF TRUTH but we are given a choice to accept it or not. But in the DOJ there is NO CHOICE. Everyone will run towards the caller. Last week v 7 told us about the KUSHOO of in the eyes of the Disbelievers and the MANNER in which they would come out of their graves. today in v 8 we are told about their posture. Even when they stand they are hanging their heads in humiliation. Next we are told what they SAY ول DISBELIEVERS) Al kaafiroona means THE KAAFIROON (the ٱ - ر ون This specific word is used because KUFR means to COVER UP or CONCEAL the truth This specific mention of THE before the term disbelievers is because in the DOJ you have two groups BELIEVERS and DISBELIEVERS Believers form ONE group but KAAFIREEN (disbelievers) will have many groups The ALIF in the statement indicates that it includes ALL TYPES OF KAAFIREEN close. The term THIS means something they see just NOW. So it is something very ھ ذ ا و a difficult day م * ) ر * means intense difficulty ) ر,means something SHADEED strong/ severe and WASA AB meaning hard/ difficult ر س ع It doesn t mean EVERYONE will say this. since Allah mentioned the KAFIROON alone will say this it indicates that for the believers it will be exactly the opposite- and easy smooth day YAWMUN YASEER We all go through difficult times. In other verses of the QURAN Allah said the DOJ will be one day but more difficult than any other hardship you EVER went through. Think about your life where you had a moment which was very ASEER (painful and hard to bear). And what is hard for you maybe not hard for another person. Nothing in life is like this day because you will never get RELIEF on the DOJ if it is a hard day for you. Allah said though in Surah Sharh 94: 5-6 about LIFE in the duniya relief, Verily, along with every hardship is 2 ن 1 % ٱ ) " ر ) ر ا ) ٥ Verily, along with hardship is relief (i.e. there is one إ ن 1 % ٱ ) " ر ) ر ا ) ٦ hardship with two reliefs, so one hardship cannot overcome two reliefs) (6

So the above verse indicates that IN THIS LIFE (of the duniya) we DO have relief. the aakhirah is YAWMUN ASAR because there is no relief from it And just think of the torment these people would have gone through to even get here- the agonies of death, the suffering in the grave etc But the DAY of JUDGEMENT is so awful compared to it the rest of it will feel like nothing This is why DISBELIEF costs a LOT and belief has so much value even if it is just in your heart. It is for this reason that prophet sallallahualayhi'wasallam wanted so badly for his uncle to iat the very least die saying LAAILAAHA ILALLAH because this day would be hard unless you have at the very least BELIEF IN YOUR HEART before you depart from this world. This is also makes us understand that the BELEIVERS will have an easy day And the ASEER indicates that for the disbelievers this will be continuous asar in this day to be followed by more aseer after aseer When anyone belies in any of Allah s ayaat even YOURSELF tell yourself or remind yourself of this day. Is following your desire WORTH IT????????? BELIE indicates you follow your desire. People follow their desire because they think this is THEIR LIFE to enjoy Hadith prophet sallallahualayhi'wasallam said take advantage of 5 before 5 Think of this Hadith. Each one of us will be in all these stages one day. So knowing this will motivate US to make the most of our opportunities while we have them All these stages are very close to us. They are not far. The ayaat after this is for people who still don t believe even after all this explanation. Allah is further explaining for such people about the PAST NATIONS. How they were and what became them because they didn t take advantage of their life and disbelief. This is another way to make people value the faith and your life

So this starts form v 9 we notice that in the QURAN we have stories of past nations in many different ways Ex about NUH ALEI there is Surah Nuh. Surah Hud about what happened to Hud Alei) Surah Nuh talks about him in a different way Surah Qamar focuses on how Allah brought signs, thereafter they denied and Allah PUNISHED THEM. The rest of his story is in other surahs but surah QAMAR focuses on warning and their Punishemnt NUH is the first messenger. Aadam was a prophet not a messenger Idris is NOT the first messenger A messenger is someone who calls the people back to the belief brought down by a prophet.nuh called the people back to what the Prophet Aadam preached which was to worship ONE GOD alone. د و 9 وا 6 % ون و ٱز د 6 ر.9 V ذ ت 9 م 9 و م وح ذ وا * The people of Nûh (Noah) denied (their Messenger) before them, They rejected Our slave, and said: "A madman!" and he was insolently rebuked and threatened. (9) We are told again about people who belied ذ ت 9 م when the Quraysh belied the Prophet sallallahualayhi'wasallam after seeing the MOON SPLIT, Allah tells (reminds him) us about the people who FIRST belied These people are QAWMU NOOH.They take the name of their MESSENGER. This is how it was for messengers. [ex- qawmu nuh, qawmu lut etc] For prophet sallallahualayhi'wasallam since he was a prophet his people are not calle Qawmu Muhammed. There are TWO mentions of belied in this sentence. First we are told they BELIED generally belied Allah what He sent down etc ذ ت and then specifically we are told what they belied THE MESSENGER. This was their main or specific problem. We have different types of disbelievers like this who belie different things- some belie only one part, some belie everything, or only Allah, only the messenger etc These people BELIED THEIR MESSENGER specifically ذ وا * د And Allah didn t say rasoolanaa but * our servant/ slave د

Allah describes NOOH as being a slave of HIS. Allah characterizes him with UBOODEEYA This is an honour for NUH ALEI. So now we will talk a bit about the different types of UBOODEEYA First what does UBOODEEYA mean???? Ubudeeya means someone is lowering himself to Allah. The word ABD comes means this- someone submitting or lowering himself to Allah Subahaanawatha'aala How do you do this????? By obeying HIM. abstaining form sins. So to have UBOODEEYA you need- Obedience reliance trust repentance all to Allah. You are Subservient to Him. There are 3 types of UBOODEEYA 1. Uboodeeya Aamma GENERAL UBOODEEYA All of creation have this be it the believers, the disbelievers, the good people, the bad people etc How will a DISBELIEVER be subservient to Allah? through the DECREE. We have NO CHOICE in it. we all have to be subservient to it. Everyone is a slave of Allah whether they know it or not. When Allah decreed something for people they cannot change it to what they like or want personally. This is a way they are humiliated to Allah. the decree is AMR MINALLAH - a command of Allah People get depressed and very frustrated about decree; especially disbelievers, because they cannot understand why they have no power over it. they can only submit. This sort of submission HAS NO VALUE because there is NO CHOICE. You are forced to submit whether you like it or not. 2. AL UBOODEEYAA AL HAASSA LIL MU MINEEN the submission of the Mu min This is in two ways-submission in decree and submission in legislation. When any decree happens they don t resist but submit. And they get reward for it. and Allah will help them OVERCOME this problem. This is why in the following Hadith Prophet sallallahualayhi'wasallam said ANY matter is good for a believer Suhaib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, Wondrous is the affair of the believer for there is good in every matter of his and this is not the case with anyone except the believer; if he is happy, then he thanks Allah and thus there is good for him; and if he is harmed, then he shows patience and thus there is good for him. [Sahih Muslim, Book 42, Number 7138] When a Disbeliever submits in decree he does so after fighting it, getting angry etc

Ex- we see two sick people Both are patient but the reward will ONLY be for the BELIEVER This is why BELIEF has so much value Even when hardship comes the believer submits to the decree They also submit willingly in legislation. Even among the MU MINEEN there are levels of ubodeeya haassa depending on how much you submit Ex- some mu min submit immediately, some mu min have to wait a while and then submit, some submit today, some ten years later etc.so your action in the heart is what matters even for the submission of the mu mineen. For this you have to strive and seek help from Allah.

3 rd type Allah CHOSE them to be ABDULLAH these are MESSENGERS AL HAASSSA LIL ANBIYAA Allah describes them as ABDINAA because HE CHOSE THEM. He is the king so He chooses who HE WILLS may Allah help us to be slave of allah and not a slave of something else or someone else People who follow their desire become SLAVES to it. it becomes like a GOD for them This is a terrible state. This is why Allah gave a parable for them which is the parable of the DOG They become like cattle without any shepherd So if a person wants honour YOU can get it for yourself but it depends on your choice So now we will return to the verse Allah chose Nuh Alei for this task because he could handle going through what he did.. Nuh alei was suited perfectly for the people the situation etc. Allah choose him perfectly. Nuh Alei was with his people for 950 years in DAA WAH Subhanallah!!! Imagine repeating the message for so long. it would be hard right. Nuh alei had to call the people to TAWHEED (the oneness of Allah) for all this time. And it is a rahma (Mercy) of Allah that our own lifespan is so much lesser NUH Alei. we get the reward in lesser time. Subhanallah! We read one letter we get reward, we smile we get reward etc Subhanallah!! Alhamdulillah we work less and get a reward And to understand the magnitude of his effort we should know what he went through reaching the deen in this long period of time. when a father would die (in Nuh Alei time) he (the father) would warn their kids to not believe in Nuh specifically. The kids were warned against him. imagine what patience he would have had. This is why Allah choose him. he is ABDANAA in Surah Nuh 71: 5-9 Nuh Alei is telling Allah Subahaanawatha'aala his plight He said: "O my Lord! Verily, I have called my people night and day (i.e. secretly and openly to accept the doctrine of Islâmic Monotheism)[], (5) "But all my calling added nothing but to (their) flight (from the truth) (6) "And verily, every time I called unto them that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, and persisted (in their refusal), and magnified themselves in pride. (7) "Then verily, I called to them openly (aloud); (8) "Then verily, I proclaimed to them in public, and I have appealed to them in private, (9 what effort he goes through and what hardship he faces in doing it. So Alhamdulillah things are not like this for us. So these people made a statement to NUH و 9 وا

6 % ون After this part you have to stop And majnoon is a word we hear even now. All the prophets all the daai s were called this Shaytaan guides them to this because it is the easiest way to refute- claim they are mad. Don t even we hear this term nowadays being used by disbelievers or weak believers in respect of people who are being GUIDED? Of course we do. Majnoon means their MIND is not there. Today we have many alternative terms menaing the same thing like brainwashed, possessed etc So if or when anyone says this to you (calls you mad, brainwashed etc) WHILE it will make you feel sad knowing what the prophets and messengers went through will comfort you Subhanallah!!! NUH alei people were calling him mad because he was changing what their parents and forefathers did. So speaking in such a way is a BIG CRIME because they belie someone ALLAH choose as a messenger. How can a SLAVE OF ALLAH be mad???? Subhanallah!!! For any of us today (though we may not be) if people keep at you again and again saying you are MAD even your own mind will start believing it. but in Nuh Alei case he was supported by Allah Subahaanawatha'aala. and withut this support he couldn t have borne it. Here MAJNOON is in passive tense because the DISBELIEVER is rebuking NUH ALEI It is for this reason that this ENTIRE surah itself is a rebuke to the KAAFIR in response to them REBUKING the messengers of Allah. before. was mentioned in verse 4 % ز د 6 ر They و ٱز د 6 ر try to humiliate Nuh Alei by rebuking him. so these ayaat are a musthajirr for them a rebuking for them This is why when you read this verse no 9, the ulama said it should be read stopping at MAJNOON. The next verse tells us the RESPONSE of the servant of Allah when his people treat him so. V 10 shows us that Nuh Alei immediately FLEES TO ALLAH This is how a servant of Allah should be. Before taking any means IMMEDIATELY his heart flees to His Lord. And It is the reaction at the FIRST MOMENT that matters. To have this we need firmness and knowledge of Allah. We as usually think straight away of the MEANS.

Ex- when we have a problem sometimes the first word we call out is mama But we should immediately be able to call out YAA ALLAH If you are not doing this (calling out to Allah, turning to Him in the first instance) don t stress and worry. because NO ONE said you do it on your own. ask Allah Subahaanawatha'aala for the HELP He will make it easy so that you stay firm in the first instance of any problem you are faced with. د * ر ۥ أ @? % وب = > ر 10. V Then he invoked his Lord (saying): "I have been overcome, so help (me)!" (10 He called out (supplicated, made dua) to his د * ر THIS NAME indicates all Allah s actions reforming taking charge nurturing you etc ر ب OUR HEART is like a valley we need something to fill it so it overflows. When it overflows with knowledge of Allah Subahaanawatha'aala everything will be about Him. we will call on and run to only Allah. Knowing HIM is what will make your heart FIRM and Nuh Alei knows no one can help him or relieve him except Allah because especially in his situation as a Messenger he had to keep preaching. Messengers don t have a choice to just turn away and leave their people when they are rejected. (unless Allah gives him the order to do so).so Nuh Alei is making DUA to Allah The Dua Nuh Alei made consists of two parts 1. أ @? % وب = > ر 2. When you think of what he went through, we d except him to make a long drawn out dua but look at Nuh (Alei) duas. This is why we should make use of the duas of the sunnah. prophets sallallahualayhi'wasallam duas are not long but they are perfect and sufficient. In the first part? % وب Nuhأ @ Alei is showing Allah he is helpless in need of Allah s aid. For your dua to be answered you need to show Allah how INKISAAR you are. This is the door which shows Allah you NEED HIM

MAGHLOOBON is from GHALABA -which means OVERCOME or DEFEATED Maghloob means BEING DEFEATED. someone else overcame him Nuh Alei is describing himself saying im already defeated by them.i have no power to overcome them Though he is a messenger his dua is acceptable to Allah. Usually people in the highest position don t like to confess their inabilities Ex mother with her children will not like to admit she cannot do something. Look at Nuh Alei!! HE IS A MESSENGER!! But yet so humble to Allah Throughout the 950 years he preached only 73 people believed in him! Subhanallah!! The SECOND part of his dua is next = > he says YOU (Allah) DEFEAT THEM ر He is NOT asking his Lord Give ME a victory When a person really knows Allah even his addresses to his Rabb will follow etiquette Nuh Alei is basically saying im nothing. I have no power and the victory belongs to you- My Lord All mentioned about tawakkul reliance This word FANTHASIR in itself is a DUA.The SUKOON at the end gives the feeling this is a dua See how short it is but so powerful the dua will carry more or less weight according to the belief YOU have in the words you say. This is why sometimes in a problem immediately YAA Allah with immense feeling of need and reliance and it may carry more weight though its just two words. Whereas at other times you may make a detailed dua but it may carry less weight cos your feeling of inkisaar and reliance on Allah maybe less. In other ayaat of the QURAN it mentions in detail how Nuh Alei asked Allah - O Allah don t leave anyone form the kaafireen on the earth And something else we should understand is that this dua was made by him after 950 years of calling people to the right. Prophets and Messengers have ONE acceptable invocation. Nuh Alei used his for this.and Allah responded immediately.it is because they are patient that Allah accepts their duas. As the Hadith says what happened to these people was a result of their enmity towards Allah s Auliya Abu Hurayra said that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Allah Almighty said, 'I have declared war on anyone who shows enmity to a friend of Mine. My slave does not draw near to Me with anything I love more than what I have made obligatory on him. And my slave continues to draw near to Me with superogatory actions until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. If he were to ask Me for something, I would give it to him. If he were to ask Me for refuge, I would give him refuge.'" [al-bukhari]

% ء $% C % ر 11. V % ء أ و ٲب )ٱ F - So We opened the gates of heaven with water pouring forth. (11) Fathathahnaa means OPENED like as if the samaa sky has GATES and out of it poured WATER Imagine how much water this was. Rain that we know stops. when NUH ALEI made dua it was different to normal rain. $% C % ر % ء Munhamir is derived from Hamara BY FORCE. it was not only pouring out it came with force and NO CONTROL These kaafireen whom he called to Islam for so long never accepted the DEEN. People may ask the question why was his dua so harsh? But he was also inspired by Allah who knew that no matter how much more Nuh Alei preached the people would NEVER accept Islam. ٱH ر ض * و < 9 د 9 د ر.12 V * أ % ر % ء ٱ و 6 ر And We caused the spring to gush forth from the earth. So the waters (of the heaven and the earth) met for a matter predestined (12) This verse tells us that not only did water come down onto the earth from UP but it gushed out from the springs of the earth itself. FAJJARNA is ike FAJJARA. It means explode.this is like how water GUSHES when you open a pipe Nowadays when we look at the earth we cannot see springs everywhere but in that time the WHOLE EARTH became like there was a SPRING UNDERNEATH IT and water gushed out continuously. * و To the point they said water came out even from the OVENS Imagine a place where there is usually fire spouting water! This is HOW Allah destroyed QAWMU NOOH as a result of their disbelief And Allah is telling this to QURAYSH you disbelieve even after the moon split Look at qawmu nooh how long they lived but what was their end So your belief is what matters

* أ % ر 9 د 9 د ر % ء ٱ % ء ٱ means different types of water This makes us see how Allah is Qadeer (All Able) And at the same time recall He is ghafoor (forgiving), raheem (merciful) but also shadeedul iqaab So don t postpone repentance. The time is now because YOU DON T KNOW when you will have to leave everything and depart this life as the people of Nuh did. most of the time we tend to focus only on Allah being GHAFOORUR RAHEEM but this example of the People of Nuh should remind us that Allah does and will punish the bad servants. So don t underestimate Allah Subahaanawatha'aala and When these people belied the Messenger they belied Allah this verse indicates there was a meeting between the waters of the sky (up) and the springs of the earth (down) When did they meet?? *they met upon the command of Allah أ % ر 9 د ر means as preordained by Allah Allah has decreed even when the waters met in the Flood of Nuh and everything is predecreed by HIS BOOK (al lawul mahful) This QURAN is a means for guidance. When we read this we realize nothing else is important except that we end up injannah Because after all where are these people who insulted their messenger? NOWHERE Subhaanaka Allaahumma wa bihamdika, 'ash-hadu 'an laa 'ilaaha 'illaa 'Anta, 'astaghfiruka wa 'atoobu 'ilayka. Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise is to You. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You. May Allah forgive me all my errors mistakes and shortcomings.they are my own or from the shayateen. Auzubillahi minas shaytaan nirrajeem.please do let me know any corrections.may Allah reward and accept from sister Emaan and us all. Ameen
