F EBRUARY 2017 INSIDE THIS Preaching Schedule 2 Ash Wednesday 2 February Lit Club 2 Special Offering for Special People Dear Friends, If you have been on a mission trip to Casa de Misericordia, you have been touched by the love, faith, commitment, and joy of Ricardo and Carla Traconis. They are the house parents for the children at the orphanage; they live on-site. On January 7, their house burned to the ground. Fortunately no one was injured, but they lost all their possessions. They need everything. On February 12, King Avenue Church will collect a special offering to help the orphanage recover from this tragedy. Please make checks payable to "King Avenue UMC" with "orphanage fire" on the memo line. You may also give at the kiosks in the Milling Area and Fellowship Hall. Please hold the orphanage and the Traconis family in your prayers. CARILLON PAGE 3 FREE ADMISSION All Are Welcome Saturday, February 25 at 7pm King Avenue United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall Join us for a screening of An Act of Love. This powerful film documents the trial that rocked the United Methodist Church and the minister, Rev. Frank Schaefer, who risked his career and identity as a UMC elder to officiate his son s marriage to his longtime partner. A discussion with Q&A will follow with a Reconciling Ministries Network board member. The timing of our showing of this film is significant in light of impending trials of LGBTQ clergy and Judicial Council decisions concerning LGBTQ clergy. Even though the United States now recognizes the right of same-sex couples to marry, our denomination still struggles with these issues. We encourage you to attend this screening to inform yourself about the issues that are of national and denominational importance. Emotionally powerful and ultimately uplifting, this film follows the travails of Pennsylvania minister Frank Schaefer, who gets into trouble with the United Methodist Church when he officiates the wedding of his gay son. Director Scott Sheppard presents a lovely portrait of a family and sensitively explores the concerns of a mainstream church struggling to deal with cultural shifts. It s compelling from beginning to end." San Francisco Chronicle
