Let us come before Him with thanksgiving. (Psalm 95:2) In just a few weeks, we will all gather around the dinner table with our family and friends to joyously celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. It is a very special day that was put aside many years ago for us as a nation to give thanks to our Lord for the blessing of our country. Over the years, many traditions have been added to this holiday. One of the more popular ones has been the enjoyment of football games, and at least as popular has become the tradition for many people of beginning their Christmas gift shopping on Thanksgiving Day. While it is wonderful that we enjoy this day with our family and friends in many different ways, it is so important that we spend time lifting our hearts together in prayer for our nation. The practice of thanksgiving is an inseparable and longstanding part of our faith as Christians. In the Old Testament we find many calls for the people of God to continually come before Him with thanksgiving. King David in the Psalms repeatedly reminds us to come before the Lord with thanksgiving (Psalm 95:2), to give thanks to him and praise his name. (Psalm 100:4) Saint Paul in his letters makes it clear to us why we, as Christians, are giving thanks to our Lord: it is for the grace we receive through our Lord Jesus Christ. Saint Paul writes: so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. (2 Corinthians 4:15) It is the grace that we receive through Jesus, not because of our worthiness but because of His love for us, that we give thanks. We give thanks to God for His grace not only to us individually, but also as a nation. In 1893, a young English professor by the name of Katharine Lee Bates traveled by train from Massachusetts to Colorado Springs to teach a short summer class at a local college. She was so awe struck by the beauty of the American landscape that on the train she wrote a beautiful song of thanks America the Beautiful. It quickly became one of the most treasured American songs because in it she recognized that the beauty of creation was a testament to the existence of God (Romans 1:20) and the grace that He had bestowed on America. The ending of the first stanza, and most of the eight stanzas that make up the song, begins with the words God shed His grace on thee. She recognized and gave thanks for the grace of the Lord that is necessary for America to succeed. But she did not stop there. With poetic words, she asked for a country that was divided in many ways to be united by and under the Lord: And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea! As we gather together this Thanksgiving, let us lift up our hearts in prayer, giving thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ for the blessing of our nation and asking that He unite us as one people under Him. May the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, along with our Heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit, be with each of you and our nation on this Thanksgiving Day and always.

It has some new features being enjoyed by our Armenian and Sunday School students, as well as all members of our church community. One of them is the ability to fill water bottles by using the area designated with a sensor on the fountain, making this an eco-friendly addition to the church. The cost to install this wonderful unit was $1,000. If anyone is interested in helping to offset this expense, the Board of Trustees and Der Hayr will greatly appreciate your generosity. Parishioners If you would like to receive your issue of the Gantegh electronically, please forward your email address to the Church Website: info@stsvartanantzchurch.org This would help to defray our costs greatly. We appreciate your consideration.
