December December 13, 1975 Mr. Harry Bollback Word of Life Schroon Lake, MY 12C70 Dear Mr. Bollback: This Is in response to your request for an interview with Rev. & Mrs. Norman Johnson. Your interest in their remarkable story is appreciated. I have spoken with the Johnsons, and they expect your call at 416/547-S213 (late in the evening is the best time as they are out most of the day). They appeared recently on 'Front "''age Challenge" a coaat-to-coast, secular show in Canada with a potential TV audience of 1\ million viewers. Two producers here are now considering them for their own programs. Dr. L. L. King, Vice.'resident/Division of Overseas Ministries, asks that If you run the interviews you clearly identify the Johnsons with The Christian and Missionary Alliance, Cordially, Henry "aasonen Director of Communications HP:dc P. S. By the way, the Johnsons will be on a nationwide tour of the U. S., January 11-25. Rev. Eugene Evans of our headquarters staff is planning this tour. A television presentation before, along or after the tour may serve both our purposes.
TH CHRISTIAN AND MISSIONARY ALLIANCE DIVISION OF NORTH AMERICAN MINISTRIES December 18, 1975 KJYACK. MEW YORK 10960 CABLE ADDS PABOUSIANYACKNEWVOWSTATt PHOISJE f914] 353-0-750 This is to confirm our telephone conversation regarding the proposed tour of the Phillips and Johnsons. First of all - may I express my very sincere appreciation to you for your complete cooperation to work with me in scheduling this tour. Your immediate and enthusiastic response to our proposal was most gratifying. When we first discussed the possibility of such a tour ray immediate concern was timing. How, I thought, can we schedule a two-week tour across sections of the United States and Canada at such a late date and expect affirmative replies to our every request. It happened! I can only say, "thank you." But it's a big thank you and It comes from the heart. Our only purpose in arranging this tour is to provide opportunity for our missionaries to tell their remarkable story -- the story of their capture, God's sustaining grace during their imprisonment, and the great answer to prayer that effected their release from captivity in a communist prison. This is not a big publicity venture. These missionaries were taken prisoner by the communists. They endured unbelievable hardships for eight long months that almost cost some their lives. With God's help they survived. But during those long months, the Lord's people around the world prayed! God heard their prayers. On October 31, 1975, they were released!! This is their story. We want as many people as possible in your area to hear that story. This tour is being arranged through the office of Missionary Deputation under the division of North American Ministries. We want it to be a Christian and Missionary Alliance cooperative effort with you serving as coordinator. Each pastor in your area will be notified about this and we are urging all to cooperate in order that this service will be an outstanding success and bring praise to the glory of God. The total number in the party will be six -- Dr. and Mrs. Richard Phillips, Rev. and Mrs. Norm Johnson, Mr. James Sellers, and myself. We will travel by air. (See attached schedule.) You will note that the schedule allows but two free days during the entire tour. This is a full and taxing schedule. For this reason I would ask you to arrange for accommodations in homes where the missionaries can enjoy privacy and be as comfortable as possible. We would prefer that they stay in motels, but this would increase costs. -2- Because of the tight schedule and the missionaries' need for as much rest as possible, I request that no press conferences or public gatherings outside the church be arranged. After our arrival, we may have to consider one or two press interviews on an individual basis if there is time. Certainly, press reporters and photographers should not be denied hearing their testimony. Under separate cover, I will be sending you a news release and photographs that you may wish to use in your own church publicity and for informing the press of our coming. Here is the general format of the program that we want to follow. Since I am a fellow missionary of the Phillips and Johnsons, I would like to chair the service. We want the district superintendent to be present if at all possible and have him have a part in the program. We will also certainly want to recognize the pastors of all the supporting churches who are present as well as any musical groups participating in the program. Each of the four missionaries will speak on some segment of the theme that we are developing. It will probably be, "Not Somehow, But Triumphantly." The talks will be interspersed with appropriate songs by Jim Sellers and perhaps a number by another musical group from the area. We would like to take a free-will offering to cover expenses. Our estimate at the moment is that the fifteen-day tour including travel expenses and honorariums for the missionaries and Mr. Sellers will be in excess of $7,000. There will also be rental fees for auditoriums, miscellaneous expenses, etc., so we will therefore need to raise $1,000 each evening. Any excess will go right into the General Fund where it is urgently needed to send these four missionaries and over 800 others to mission fields around the world. Please urge your people to pray with us for this tour remembering especially the following requests: (1) that the Lord will give daily strength to the missionaries, (2) that there will be a great response in commitment among young people as well as others, and (3) that the Lord will give us good weather everywhere we go. From Decem I will be in touch with you regarding further details of the tour. ber 22-27 I can be reached at (412) 452-8583. Cordially in Christ, W. They have over 100 radio programs a week "from Maine to California" and over 50 television programs a week (in New York City, on Channel 11 at 9 A.M. every Saturday; in Los Angeles, two weekly programs; in San Francisco, three weekly programs). I spoke with Jack Wrytzen of "Word of Life" this morning. He understands that the missionaries should not be rushed at this time, but asks when could one of them be interviewed.
