Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Thomas More June 4, 2017 Pentecost Theme/Call To Worship Fifty days after Easter, we celebrate Pentecost, the birth of the church, and all three readings for Pentecost Sunday focus on the workings of the Holy Spirit. Introduction To The Word Acts 2:1-11: The first reading from Acts begins with the statement: When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. For ancient Israel, the feast of Pentecost celebrated the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, which defined Israel as a people and as a nation. For Luke, just as ancient Israel was guided by the law, so now the church is led by the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13: In the second reading from the First Letter to the Corinthians, we hear Paul speak of the Holy Spirit. In writing his letter, Paul employed a variety of strategies to appeal for Christian unity, one of which we hear in today s reading: the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jn 20:19-23: Today s reading is taken from the Gospel of John, and it is the resurrected Christ s first encounter with the disciples. Hiding in fear behind locked doors, Jesus initial words to the disciples are, Peace be with you. Jesus then commissions the disciples ( As the Father has sent me, so I send you ) and empowers them with the Spirit ( Receive the Holy Spirit ). The disciples success in building up the early church was directly connected to the presence of the Spirit in their lives and in their work. Adapted from Liturgical Publications Inc, Connect! Please read the letter carefully and respond as generously as you can. Your continued support is sincerely appreciated.
