September 14, 2014 From the Pastor s Desk The Exaltation of the Holy Cross PRAYER TO ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL: As Catholics it seems we must always be ready for the next Assault. Satan is truly alive and well. And as we know he never gives up. We ve probably all heard or read about the news from Oklahoma where they want to have a Black Mass or a satanic ritual or whatever they choose to call it. You will find the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel on the bottom of this column so that it is easy to cut out and pray at your family meals or before bed or whenever. This is the only rebuttal that we can exercise. But we have it on good authority Where two or more are gathered in my name I am in their midst. So let us continue to serve the Lord to the best of our ability and pray that He will answer. CATHOLIC WORK CAMP: On the weekend of October 10, 11 and 12 we will host the Catholic Work Camp. Mayor Tom Whyel spoke to us last week and invited us to give him some work projects. These young people coming will be accompanied by plenty of adults and they will have been trained to do the projects assigned. So if you have a project around your Braddock area home give a call to the North Braddock Borough and find out how to apply at this point...you may be placed on a if we can get to it list. But that s ok. The Camp will utilize Good Shepherd Church and School for the weekend. So we will have all of our masses in Sacred Heart Church the weekend of October 10, 11 and 12. The camp participants will have most of the parking spots filled at Good Shepherd. This is a good solution. Thank you for doing your part to make this a win-win weekend for our parish, many of our families and Catholic Work Camp. PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of Heavenly Hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. MINISTRIES: I am repeating this article again this week because our need for more ministers is increasing. So please give some thought as to how you may serve. In alphabetical order we need: 1) Altar Servers These can be children in fourth grade or above or adults willing to serve for at least one Mass a month. Adults could just come to the Offertory Table during the creed and then return to their seat when the prayer Pray my brothers & sisters is prayed. 2) Eucharistic Ministers These should be at least 18 years old and willing to serve twice a month. They distribute the sacred hosts or present the cup for the distribution of Holy Communion. They should also receive under both species. 3) Lectors They read the first and second readings and the prayers of the faithful if the deacon is not present. They also process in with the Book of the Gospels when no deacon is present. 4) Ushers They are entrusted with welcoming people, taking up the collection and assisting someone if an episode of some sort takes place. 5) Greeters This is a new addition. Would you be willing to stand at an entrance and welcome people to Good Shepherd Parish? Visitors would like various information, like where are your restrooms or whatever. You would be scheduled once a month and provide a nice service. Anyone who serves in these ministries must be a good, practicing Catholic able to receive the Eucharist. If over the age of 18, they must complete and comply with the Protecting God s Children rules and regulations. We will connect you with Rose Morgan who is the Administrator of this program for Good Shepherd Parish. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PET BLESSING: Because of other activities I will bless the pets on Sunday, October 5th at 1:00 PM in the Sacred Heart parking lot. Peace and Love, Fr. Semler

MONTHLY COMMEMORATIVE CELEBRATION The next MCC will be celebrated on Thursday, September 25th. Please turn in your intentions by Thursday, September 18th. SECOND COLLECTIONS: This weekend, September 13th & 14th the second collection will be taken for the Bishop s Education Fund. SPECIAL COLLECTION Next weekend, September 20th & 21st a second collection will be taken (special diocesan collection) to provide humanitarian relief and pastoral support for our affected brothers and sisters in the Middle East. This special appeal comes about because of the grave concern for the ongoing crisis in the cradle of Christianity and the terrible suffering of Christians and other innocent victims of violence in Iraq, Syria and Gaza. Your kindness will benefit those struggling to survive, protect their children and live with dignity in very dire conditions. RESPONSE TO BLACK MASS: All Are Encouraged to Participate in Eucharistic Adoration on 9/21 You may be aware that a satanic group has scheduled a so -called black mass at the Civic Center Music Hall in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to take place on Sunday, September 21, 2014. This is not some form of dark entertainment. It is deadly serious, blasphemous and obscene an affront not only to the Catholic Church but to all persons of faith. In response to this event, Bishop David A. Zubik invites the clergy, religious, faithful and people of good will to join him in a special time of Eucharistic Adoration on Sunday, September 21, 2014, from 6:00 9:00 p.m., in the John Bernard McDowell Auditorium on the campus of Saint Paul Seminary (2900 Noblestown Road, Crafton).
