Explorer & Trailblazer Ministers, This fall we will be starting a new curriculum for Children s Church! The new curriculum is called The Gospel Project for Kids and we will be doing a trial of this curriculum in May. Below are more details. The Gospel Project for Kids -the focus is on how the entire Bible points to Jesus -we will use the Giant Timeline (pictured below) to help the kids remember what they are learning from week-to-week and month to month. (We don t have the timeline yet, so for May we will use a picture for each week.) -There are two videos for each lesson; a Bible Account video and a Discussion Starter Video. -Each theme has 3-6 lessons. This means that some months may have 2 themes. We will still put out the lesson plans by the month to make it easier for all of us. Plan for Spring & Summer 2018 sample month of The Gospel Project for Kids in May What s In the Bible? videos in June, July and August Plan for Fall 2018 & Going Forward The Gospel Project for Kids from September to May. We will go through the entire Bible in 4 years. Apologetics in June based on materials from Answers In Genesis. Why apologetics? Students are being taught evolution as fact. We want them to know that they should believe the account of Creation in the Bible and that there is evidence for creation. This way they will be equipped to continue believing the Bible as they become adults. What s In the Bible? videos in July and August. This is an excellent video series that explains Biblical concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. Please send an email with your feedback to office@mendingandsending.org after you teach in May. 1. Did the kids like the new curriculum? 2. What did you like the best? 3. Is there anything you didn t like? Why? 4. Is there anything that needs improvement? Suggestions for how to improve? 5. Was there enough time/too much time/too little time for the lesson and at least one activity? 6. Any other thoughts? Thank you! Jen & Sherry

Turn to God Receive Jesus as Lord Experience Holy Spirit Power Keep growing in our walk with God BIBLE TREK CHILDREN S MINISTRY EXPLORERS May 2018 Our theme is Jesus Is The Messiah Memory Verse: John 14:6 Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. May 6 Jesus Met Nicodemus (John 3:1-21) May 13 John The Baptist (John 3:22-36) May 20 The Samaritan Woman (John 4:1-42) May 27 Jesus Rejected At Nazareth (Luke 4:14-30, Isaiah 61:1-2)

5/6/18 Jesus Met Nicodemus Explorers Bible Passage: John 3:1-21 Main Point: Jesus told Nicodemus he must be born again. Memory Verse: John 14:6 Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. Big Picture Question: Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Welcome time Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Fill out attendance sheets and set up snack. Intro: During Snack Challenge the kids to answer the following riddles: 1. When I see you, you see you too. What am I? (A mirror; when you face it, it shows your reflection.) 2. I must get wet in order to dry, if you use me too often, I may start to cry. What am I? (A towel; if you use the same towel too much, it will drip.) 3. The stronger I get, the less you can see, but turn on a light and I will flee. What am I? (darkness) 4. The letter I start with and end with is E. Open me up; there s a letter in me. What am I? (An envelope; the letter inside is a written letter.) 5. I cling to your heels when you walk or you run, but some kick me aside when their day is done. What am I? (shoes) SAY Riddles can be confusing but are often fun. In our Bible account today, we will learn about some things Jesus said that were confusing at first too. Giant Timeline & Big Picture Question Leader We have been learning about Jesus life and ministry. We learned about Jesus ancestors; His birth; Jesus growing up, being baptized, and going into the wilderness to be tempted. After Jesus returned from the wilderness, He began His public ministry. That means He began to teach people and perform miracles. Many people wanted to know about Jesus and see Him in action. (Point to the appropriate space on the timeline.) Today we will learn about one of the religious leaders who visited Jesus at night to see what Jesus would say about Himself. Nicodemus talked to Jesus to learn about Him. Our account is called, Jesus Met Nicodemus. So, here s the big picture question: who did Jesus say He is? You ll have to listen to today s account to find out! The BIBLE ACCOUNT 1. Show the Bible account video Jesus Met Nicodemus. 2. Tell the Bible Account Set the scene: Dim the lights and use lantern to create a nighttime scene as you tell the account. Act it out: Write the names Nicodemus and Jesus on sticky notes. Invite two kids to wear the sticky notes and act out the account as you tell it. Christ Connection Leader Pharisees like Nicodemus believed that obeying all of God s laws was the way to enter God s kingdom. This was different from what Jesus taught. Jesus said that if Nicodemus trusted in Him, his sins would be forgiven. Nicodemus needed new life eternal life but he could not do anything to earn it. Eternal life is a gift that comes only from God. Only Jesus can save people when they trust in Him. Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah.

We are all like Nicodemus. We are sinners and cannot save ourselves. No amount of obedience can make up for the sin and disobedience in our hearts. That s why God sent Jesus. Jesus lived the perfect life we could not and died on the cross for our sins. God raised Jesus from the dead to show that His death was the perfect sacrifice to defeat sin. When we trust in Jesus for our salvation, God forgives us and gives us new life. We are born again into God s family as new people free from sin. Discussion Starter Video Leader Jesus told Nicodemus he must be born again. Everyone is a sinner spiritually dead and separated from God. How can we get to heaven? Watch the Nicodemus Discussion Starter video on the flash drive. Guide kids to discuss how people get to heaven. Ask the following questions. If someone asked you how to get to heaven, what would you say? What does the Bible say about how to get to heaven? Look up these verses: Romans 6:23, Romans 10:9, Ephesians 2:8-9 Leader I don t know about you, but I sure am glad that we don t get to heaven by keeping all of the rules. I am not good at that. Jesus lived a perfect life instead, and we can trust in Him to save us from our sin. People don t have power to give new life. Eternal life is a gift that comes only from God. God can change us, and He can change others when we share the gospel with them. Activities Choose one or more of the following activities to do with the kids. Memory Verse Game Write the memory verse on the white board so the kids can see it. While holding a pillow, say the first word and toss the pillow to another kid. She must say the second word as quickly as she can before tossing the pillow to a third kid. Continue until kids have said the key passage. Play again as time allows. Consider using a stopwatch to time the kids. Play again to see if kids can improve their time. Say We will be memorizing this verse over the next few weeks. It helps us remember that Jesus is more than just a good man or a wise teacher. Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Jesus made it clear that no one could be born again without Him. Bible Account Review & Bible Skills Form two teams of kids. Give each team a flashlight. Ask the following questions one at a time, allowing the kids to use their flashlights to signal they know the answer. The team who flashes first gets to answer the question for a point. If they are incorrect, the opposing team may steal. The team with the most points wins. Questions: Who visited Jesus at night? (Nicodemus, John 3:1-2) Who was Nicodemus? (He was a Pharisee, a ruler of the Jews; John 3:1) What did Jesus say must happen for a person to see the kingdom of God? (Be born again, John 3:3) What Old Testament account did Jesus talk about? (Moses and the bronze snake, John 3:14) How did God show His love to the world? (He gave His One and Only Son, John 3:16) Everyone who believes in Jesus will have what? (eternal life, John 3:16) Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Flashlight Tag Dim the lights and give each child a flashlight. Select one child to be It. Only his flashlight should be on. As he tags other players, they can turn on their flashlights and begin tagging others as well. The game ends when all players have turned on their lights. Say Nicodemus visited Jesus at night when it was dark. He might have hoped to hide his visit from the other religious leaders. Jesus explained that sinners love darkness because it helps them hide, but He is the Light of the world (John 3:19-20). When we believe in Jesus, we become glimmers of the Light in the world.

5/13/18 Jesus And John The Baptist Explorers Bible Passage: John 3:22-36 Main Point: Jesus came from heaven to earth. INTRO: Great and Small Hold various competitions to see who can do things the best, like taking the largest step, jumping the highest, reaching the tallest, and so forth. Then see who can crouch the lowest, whisper the softest, and so forth. Talk to the kids about situations where both a big action and a small action might be necessary, such as reaching a tall ledge or fitting into a small space. SAY In our Bible account today, we will hear why John the Baptist said that he must become less and Jesus must become greater. What do you think that means? Is easy or hard to admit when someone is better than you? GIANT TIMELINE & BIG PICTURE QUESTION during snack Leader We ve been studying Scripture to learn about Jesus straight from Jesus. We want to read His words in the Bible to learn about Him. Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Messiah is a word that means anointed one or chosen one. This title is used to refer to Jesus because God chose Him to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. As we go through this account, think about the ways we can see this is true Jesus really is the Messiah. Show the giant timeline. Point out the previous Bible account, Jesus Met Nicodemus. Remind the kids that Jesus told Nicodemus he must be born again, and we learned that this meant spiritual birth by believing in Jesus. Then point to today s account, Jesus and John the Baptist. THE BIBLE ACCOUNT 1. Show the Bible video John The Baptist on the flash drive. 2. Read the Bible Account: John 3:22-36 Shout It Out: Tell the kids to shout from the earth when they hear John and from heaven when they hear Jesus. CHRIST CONNECTION Sketch the Bible account: Choose a student to draw a picture of Jesus and John the Baptist. Stick figures are fine! Leader Jesus came from heaven to earth to be God s promised Savior, the Messiah who would take away people s sin and give them new life with God. John joyfully gave up his position as a leader and teacher to Jesus because that position was rightfully His. In our lives, Jesus rightfully deserves the most important position too. We often want to lead our own lives and be in charge of ourselves. This is a sinful attitude because God made us to glorify Him. God sent Jesus to die on the cross and rise from the dead to forgive our sin. When we trust Jesus, we can be forgiven and set free. Then we can joyfully step aside and give Jesus the best position in our lives the position that is rightfully His. DISCUSSION STARTER VIDEO Leader Have you ever been wanted to be the best at something? How do you feel when someone else does better than you? Watch the video Discussion Starter-John The Baptist on the flash drive. Guide kids to discuss why the boy and girl in the video were trying to out-do each other.

Leader If you are not careful, you can become jealous and try to do silly things just so you can beat that other kid. John could have been jealous that people were following Jesus instead of him, but John understood that Jesus was more important than him. John s job was to prepare people for Jesus. Jesus is the promised Messiah. God sent Him to save the world from sin. John was just God s messenger. ACTIVITIES Choose one or more of the following activities to do with the kids. Memory Verse Activity Write the memory verse on the white board. Choose a student to erase a word or two from the verse. Challenge kids to read the verse, filling in the missing words. Continue to erase additional words each round, inviting the kids to read the verse each time until the entire verse is erased. See if anyone can say it from memory. Say Great job with that verse! Jesus said many things about Himself to help people understand who He is. Our key passage reminds us that Jesus is the only way to have life with God the Father. There is no other way to have life with God. John the Baptist knew this, and so he joyfully stepped aside when Jesus came from heaven to earth. John s mission was to tell people to prepare for Jesus, and Jesus was there! Bible Review & Bible Skills 1. Have the kids sit in a circle. Let the first child choose a card with a question on it. 2. If s/he answers correctly the move on to the next child and have that child choose a question. 3. If s/he answers incorrectly, ask her to be like John the Baptist and pass the question to another child with a good attitude. 4. The next child may answer the question. If answered incorrectly, the kids should find the reference to read the answer from their Bibles. Questions: What did Jesus do in the countryside? (He spent time with His disciples, and people were baptized; John 3:22) What did John s followers tell John? (Jesus was baptizing people, and people were following Him; John 3:26) John said he was not whom? (the Messiah, John 3:28) To which people at a wedding did John compare Jesus and himself? (Jesus is like the groom, John was like the groom s friend, John 3:29) Who did John say must become greater? (Jesus, John 3:30) Where did Jesus come from? (Jesus came from heaven to earth, John 3:31) Whose words does Jesus speak? (God s words, John 3:34) What will those who believe in the Son have? (eternal life, John 3:36) Who will not have eternal life? (those who refuse to believe in the Son, John 3:36) Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Say John had been preaching about the kingdom of God and baptizing people to prepare them for Jesus. Jesus started doing many of the same things. It might have seemed to some of John s followers as though Jesus were copying John, but John knew that Jesus is God s Son. John stepped aside with a good attitude to let Jesus take His rightful place as most important. John knew that only Jesus has the power to save people from sin. Less and Less Limbo Invite two volunteers to hold a broomstick horizontally over their heads. Challenge the rest of the group to walk under the limbo stick without touching the stick or letting their hands touch the floor. After the whole class has passed underneath the stick, switch stick holders, lower the bar, and start again. Whoever is the last kid to successfully pass under the lowest limbo setting wins. Say In our game, you needed to get lower and lower to keep passing under the stick and moving on to the next round. In a way, that is a little like what John wanted to do with Jesus. John completed his mission of preparing people for Jesus arrival, so it was time for him to become less important so Jesus mission could take place. What do you think it means to make yourself decrease? What does it mean to make Jesus increase?

5/20/18 The Samaritan Woman Explorers Bible Passage: John 4:1-42 Main Point: Jesus told the Samaritan woman He is the Messiah. INTRO: Cracker Challenge during snack Give each kid five crackers. Challenge them to eat all five crackers and then try to whistle. Stress that this is not a race and it is not about being first. Any kid who eats all five crackers and whistles wins. They should not drink anything until they have eaten the crackers and then tried to whistle. (Have water available in case anyone can t do it.) Say That was a fun game! Crackers soak up all the moisture in your mouth, making it really hard to whistle. When we get really thirsty, water is usually the best choice to drink. Today we will learn about a kind of water that you only have to drink once! Do you think that sounds like physical water or maybe something more important than that? Let s find out! GIANT TIMELINE & BIG PICTURE QUESTION Remember that we are trying to search the Bible to learn about Jesus based on what He said. Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Leader Look at the giant timeline. Two weeks ago, we learned that Jesus told Nicodemus he must be born again. Last week we learned that Jesus came from heaven to earth. In both of those stories, we saw that the way Jesus interacted with people and the things Jesus said about Himself revealed that He is the Messiah. This week we will hear a account about Jesus and a woman who was kind of an outsider. She was a Samaritan, which means that she was from Samaria and part of a people group that most Jews really disliked. We will see how Jesus treated her and learn what Jesus said. The account is called Jesus Met a Samaritan Woman. THE BIBLE ACCOUNT 1. Show the Bible video The Samarian Woman on the flash drive. 2. Read the Bible Account: John 4:1-42 Act It Out: Write Jesus and Samaritan Woman on sticky notes. Choose two children to wear the notes and act out the Bible account. CHRIST CONNECTION Leader Remember that Samaritans were people the Jews did not like. Jews thought they were better than the Samaritans. But Jesus did not treat this woman that way. He loved her and treated her with kindness. He began to tell her about living water that is much better than physical water. Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit. As Jesus and the woman talked, she could tell He was no ordinary man. Jesus told her He is the Messiah. The woman at the well was a sinner and a Samaritan, but Jesus still offered her the Holy Spirit if she believed in Him. We are dead and empty inside. Thankfully, Jesus offers us the Holy Spirit the living water just as He offered Holy Spirit to the Samaritan woman. The Holy Spirit is given to us when we trust in Jesus. He helps us love and obey God. He gives us power to overcome evil and glorify God. In that way, the Holy Spirit s power flows out of us to affect the people around us. DISCUSSION STARTER VIDEO Leader Have you ever had had something wonderful that other people wanted? Did you share it or keep it for yourself? Think about that and watch this video. (Show the Samaritan Woman discussion starter video.) Discuss with your group if they would drink the Super Hero cola. What super power would they like to have? Super Hero cola isn t real but the living water that Jesus offered the Samaritan woman, the Holy Spirit, is real.

Leader When people don t know Jesus, they are thirsty for God s presence and for life. They may not even know they need Jesus, but they do. All sinners need Jesus. He is the only way to have life! The Holy Spirit gives us life when we trust in Jesus. Then, we can share the gospel with others to help them find life in Jesus too! The best part is, no matter how many people we share the gospel with, we can never run out of living water. The more people who have faith in Jesus, the better! ACTIVITIES Choose one or more of the following activities to do with the kids. Memory Verse Activity Have the class recite the verse several times in preparation for the game. Form teams for a relay race where each team member has to run up to the whiteboard and write one word of the memory verse (in correct order) until the entire verse is written. Say Our key passage is a very famous verse in the Bible. Jesus told the disciples this verse to help them remember that He is the only One who can give them life with God the Father. Jesus wanted them to remember that He is the Messiah. The same is true for us today. Jesus is still the Messiah and the only way to be with God. Bible Review & Bible Skills 1. Have students get in pairs and give each pair of kids a Bible. Then help them look up John 4:1-42. Challenge them to retell the account in their own words and ask guiding questions to remind them of the specific details of the Bible account. Example questions: Where were Jesus and His disciples at the start of the account? (Judea, John 4:3) Where were they going? (Galilee, John 4:3) Whom did Jesus meet? (a Samaritan woman, John 4:7) What did Jesus ask for? (a drink of water, John 4:7) Why was it strange for Jesus to talk to a Samaritan? (Jews did not interact with Samaritans, John 4:9) What did Jesus offer? (living water, John 4:10) Why was the Samaritan woman confused? (She thought He was speaking of physical water, John 4:11) Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Whom did she gather to tell about Jesus? (the men/people of the town, John 4:28-30) What did the Samaritans realize about Jesus? (Jesus is the Savior of the world, John 4:42) Say Jesus told the Samaritan woman He is the Messiah. Only Jesus can provide the way for us to be reunited with God. The woman went and told the other people in her town about Jesus. At first, some believed in Him because of what she told them, but when they met Jesus and He stayed with them, they believed because of His words and actions to show them who He is. In our lives, we can tell others about Jesus, but most importantly we can show them the Bible, where Jesus words are recorded. Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Chain Reaction Play a game of regular tag. Select a child to be It. When she tags another kid, he becomes It and must tag someone else. End the game after a few minutes. Next, play version of tag where each person tagged becomes It while the original kid remains It. See how long it takes to tag each person in the new version. Say In our first version of the game, only one person at a time was It. In that way, the game could have gone on forever, with no one ever really winning. By changing the way we played, allowing each person to keep tagging others, we were able to tag everyone very quickly! In a way, this is like how we share the gospel. If you only ever share the gospel with one person, the good news can t spread as fast as if you kept sharing. In our account, the Samaritan woman told her whole town about Jesus, and they all believed in Him. Whom can you tell about Jesus this week?

5/27/18 Jesus Rejected At Nazareth Explorers Bible Passage: Luke 4:14-30 Main Point: Jesus explained that the Scriptures tell about Him. INTRO: Pass The Face during snack Choose a kid to start the game by making his best amazed face. The kid to his left should make a similar face, changing it just slightly, and the kid to her left will change it a little more. See what emotion it has changed into after the last kid has a turn. Say We can t always control our emotions, and our faces often show how we feel. In our account we will learn about how Jesus hometown reacted when He told them who He is. How do you think you would react? GIANT TIMELINE & BIG PICTURE QUESTION Leader Jesus used Scripture to explain who He is. Jesus also told people what the Scripture meant. Remember our big picture question? Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Today Jesus will reveal his identity to the people in his hometown. Leader Look at the Giant Timeline. Last week we learned about the Samaritan woman Jesus spoke with when He took a rest on His journey. This week, He arrived in Nazareth, where He grew up. Our account is called Jesus Rejected in Nazareth. Oh no! Rejected? That doesn t sound good. Let s listen to find out what happened. 21 THE BIBLE ACCOUNT 1. Show the Bible video Jesus Rejected At Nazareth on the flash drive. 2. Tell the kids: Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah wrote about God s plan to send a Messiah. Jesus read Isaiah s words and told everyone who was listening that He is the promised Messiah. 3. Read the Bible Account: Luke 4:14-30. Go with the crowd: Invite kids to be the crowd in the Bible account. They should cheer and clap in amazement when you mention the crowd was amazed. Have them scowl and boo when the crowd becomes angry. Invite kids to sigh with relief as Jesus escapes the crowd. CHRIST CONNECTION Leader Jesus explained that the Scriptures tell about Him. The whole Old Testament was the first part of God s rescue plan. Jesus explained to the people that His job was to set free people trapped by sin. The religious leaders did not like hearing that. They wanted to believe that they were doing well on their own. They thought they could obey the law well enough to earn God s favor. We think the same thing, sometimes. But Jesus died because we cannot earn God s favor. We are dead in sin, unable to save ourselves. Jesus lived a perfect life and died on the cross to pay for our sin. When we believe in Him, He forgives us, raises us to life spiritually, and gives us the Holy Spirit to live in us and guide us to live for God. Our sin is forgiven and washed away when we believe in Jesus. Session 4 DISCUSSION STARTER VIDEO Leader Jesus was rejected in His hometown. Who is rejected in this video? (Show the Jesus Rejected discussion starter video.) Leader Cherry the cupcake felt rejected when his friends didn t want to go to a birthday party with him. Cherry s friends had a good reason for not wanting to go to the birthday party with him they didn t want to get eaten! Many times there is not a good reason why people reject us. Have you ever been rejected by people who are close to you? How did that make you feel? What did you do? What would God want you to do?

Leader In our broken world, some people just won t get along well. People will reject us for different reasons at different times. Some people will reject you if you follow Jesus, just as people rejected Jesus Himself. God doesn t want us to give up though! If people reject you because you love Jesus, you can still pray for them. God can change anyone s heart. Because Jesus was rejected by people and sent to the cross to die, we can be accepted by God!
