PHOTOGRAPH RECORD ST. JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CHURCH 4983-4985 Bullion Street, Mariposa, CA August 2012 Photograph 1: View of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, circa 1864. This is the oldest known image of the church taken from the west. Note the lack of tree cover and landscaping.

Photograph 2: View looking east at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, circa 1870s. Note the board fence and lack of designed landscape, although the tree canopy has substantially increased since the earlier photograph was taken in 1864. Photograph 3: View looking southeast at St. Joseph's Catholic Church as it appears today with the rectory to the left.

Photograph 4: Similar view as Photograph 3 of St. Joseph's Catholic Church taken in the circa 1920s. Note the austerity of the landscape with the exception of the large oak tree that shades the common area between the church and the rectory. This tree has since been removed. The wire fence no longer exists and the wooden stairs have been replaced with concrete stairs with metal railing. Photograph 5: Current view of the west or main elevation of the church looking east.

Photograph 6: View of the church in the circa 1920s with the wooden stairs and hog fencing surrounding it. Note the lack of any formidable landscaping. Photograph 7: View of the entrance to the church with the rectory to the left. The large tree that once divided the rectory from the church is missing. This will be replaced with a *** in the proposed new landscape site plan.

Photograph 8: View looking northeast at the church from an adjacent hill to the southwest, circa 1940s. By this time cuts have been made in the hill slope below the church in order to accommodate parking and access roads. Photograph 9: View of the church and rectory with the newly completed rock retaining walls and driveway. The 1950s era Mariposa Mine Mill can be seen in the background of the photograph.

Photograph 10: View of the church in the late 1950s following construction of the rear addition.

Photograph 11: View of the historic sign below the church to the north. Photograph 12: Present-day view of the rectory and the church looking south.

Photograph 13: Present-day view of the church looking north from the parking lot on the south side of the parcel. Note the contemporary retaining wall and flowering plum trees. Photograph 14: Close-up view of the detail on the church steeple as it looks today.

Photograph 15: Present-day view of the rear or east elevation of the church with the 1920s rectory to the right. Photograph 16: Another current view of the rear of the church and rectory looking northwest.

Photograph 17: View of the existing south elevation wall detail. Photograph 18: Present-day view of the circa 1950s front entry steps and railing.

Photograph 19: Present-day view of the common area between the church and rectory with tree stump visible on the front left of the photograph. Photograph 20: View of the architectural detail along the north elevation of the church showing the 1958 addition.

Photograph 21: Close-up of the window detail with the replacement window forming the rectangle and the original arch top still in place.

Photograph 22: View of the architectural detail of the side entry door along the north elevation at the location of the 1958 addition.

Photograph 23: View of the present-day HVAC units in the rear of the church showing the 1958 addition. Note the cemetery in the background.

Photograph 24: Present-day view of the 1950s era mortared retaining wall, stairs, lawns, and church on the far left. Photograph 25: View looking east at the 1950s era entry steps leading to the front door of the church.

Photograph 26: View of the asphalt driveway and terraced lawn and retaining wall below the rectory. Photograph 27: Current view of the interior of the church sanctuary looking east.

Photograph 28: Historic view of the church sanctuary similar to Photograph 27. Photograph 29: View of the church sanctuary looking west towards the entrance.

Photograph 30: View of the replacement windows from the interior. Photograph 31: View looking from the interior of the rear of the church towards the exterior and the rectory in the distance.

Photograph 32: View of the garden along the north side of the rectory with the church, rectory, and rectory garage in the background. Photograph 33: View of the entrance to the church from the north with the cemetery in the center of the photograph.

Photograph 34: View of the cemetery from the north side parking area. Photograph 35: View towards the church from the intersection of 3rd Street and Highway 49. Note the church is out of view from this location.

Photograph 36: View towards the church from Highway 49 to the west of 3rd Street. Once again the church is not visible from this location. Photograph 37: View towards the church immediately west along Highway 49. The church is barely visible from this location.

Photograph 38: View of the church from a point west along Highway 49 where the church comes into view.
