PAUL S LUTHERAN CHURCH CONCORDIA, MO Opening Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 804 O Worship the King Order of Service - Divine Service Setting Four- p. 203 P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Introit Latin for entrance. It is usually a psalm that is spoken or sung responsively that begins the Service of the Word) P Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; C listen to my plea for grace. P Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; C unite my heart to fear your name. P I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, C and I will glorify your name forever. P For great is your steadfast love toward me; C you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. P O God, insolent men have risen up against me; a band of ruthless men seek my life, C and they do not set you before them. P But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, C slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; C listen to my plea for grace. Bible Class Today - July 23 Adult Bible Study will meet in the elem school gym. Today s Scripture Readings This Bible study will examine the three Scripture readings in Today s worship. We ask God to hear our prayers according to His mercy.) C Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy: Lord, have mercy. Gloria in Excelsis (sung) (A hymn of praise based on the angel s song in Luke 2) C To God on high be glory And peace to all the earth; Goodwill from God in heaven Proclaimed at Jesus' birth! Forever and forever, Be worshiped and adored; You with the Holy Spirit Alone are Lord Most High, In God the Father's glory. "Amen!" our glad reply. 2

Collect of the Day (Prayer that collects the theme of the day) P The Lord be with you. C And with thy spirit. (sung) P Let us pray. P O God, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that, ever mindful of Your final judgment, we may be stirred up to holiness of living here and dwell with You in perfect joy hereafter; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. (sung) Dear Christian brothers and sisters, Your kind gestures of support, your encouraging words and thoughtful gifts of encouragement are a witness of Jesus love to us at the time of Robert Lange s death. We mourn him as loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. However, to all of us and to many more he was a loving and faithful friend. His service in the LCMS as a pastor for 57 years was a tool which assisted him in pursuing his highest calling as an evangelistic witness and servant leader in Jesus' mission to the world and all its people. We all live in His promises, Nancy Lange and family Old Testament Reading Isaiah 44:6 8 6 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. 7 Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. 8 Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Second Reading Romans 8:18 27 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 10 3

Alleluia and Verse - p. 205 (sung) (A declaration of praise at the reading of the Gospel) C Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Gospel Reading Matthew 13:24 30, 36 43 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the thirteenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 24 [Jesus] put another parable before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27 And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds? 28 He said to them, An enemy has done this. So the servants said to him, Then do you want us to go and gather them? 29 But he said, No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn. 36 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field. 37 He answered, The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the close of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Creed - (inside back cover of the hymnal) Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 663 Rise, My Soul, to Watch and Pray Announcement from the Elders After 14 years of faithful service, Pastor Block has resigned as visitation pastor. Please call Pastor Kevin Schnakenberg of Oak Grove for city hospital calls at 308-340-4867 and the church office for local hospital calls at 660-463- 2291. First Sunday afternoon shut-in communion services are temporarily suspended pending further notice. Shut-in communion services continue to be offered at Good Shepherd Nursing Home. Join us in thanking Pastor & Mrs. Lange for his wonderful vacancy pastoral service next Sunday, July 30, between church services at a brunch sponsored by the Parish Fellowship and Elders committees in the school gym. Pastor Paul Mehl will be our new vacancy pastor starting in August, as Pastor Lange prepares for full time teaching at SPLHS. All Saint Paul High School Parents and Students are reminded that fall practices start 7/31. Students must have their physical and school health form in the office before they practice. Thanks! Updates: Audrey Mehl, Samantha Mueller For the past two years, our congregation has prayed weekly for God s guidance for Audrey and Samantha in their Gospel proclamation assignments in Hungary as Mission of Christ Network missionaries. We thank them for representing us as they follow Christ s directives to Go and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. Matthew 28:19-20. Both young women recently returned to Concordia for vacation time and to attend the June 2-8 training and equipping event for Mission of Christ and Lutheran Bible Translators workers. Audrey will move soon to Baltimore, Maryland, where she will teach at Concordia Preparatory School. Samantha will continue with Mission of Christ Network and plans to return soon to Hungary to begin her third year of Gospel proclamation there. Sermon - Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 4 9

Fish Fry The Older Adult Ministries Team is again planning a fish fry for Sunday, Aug. 6 in the St. Paul s Lutheran School gymnasium at 5 p.m. Fish, ham, iced tea and coffee, and table service will be provided. Those who plan to attend are asked to bring a dish of choice (vegetable, salad or dessert). Please do not bring serving utensils with your dish. Plan to attend if you and/or your spouse are 65 or older. Thank You The family of Bob Iserman would like to thank the ladies who contributed and served food for the funeral luncheon. Also, thanks to Pastor Lange for the uplifting service, Pastor Block for his visits, and Kathryn Oetting for playing the organ. Saying Goodbye to Pastor & Lanett Jauss We say farewell to Pastor Jauss and Lanett as they prepare to move to New London, Missouri. His last Sunday to preach here will be on August 6 th. We hope you can join us for his final service and a potluck dinner in the Immanuel Lutheran School gym following worship to thank them for their time and service at Immanuel and to wish them God s blessings on their new chapter in life. Family Footnotes It s not always easy to show love or offer help. Sometimes it s inconvenient. Sometimes it s hard. Sometimes it takes us out of our comfort zone. Because of my sinful nature, I sometimes lump people into categories and make generalizations that are not altogether fair. I bet non-christians do the same to us. If they have received help or been shown love by a Christian, then hopefully they will wonder what drives us to be helpful or loving. On the other hand, if they have witnessed uncaring, unloving, or condemning behavior from a Christian, then my goodness, why would they ever want to become one? We are not perfect because we are Christians; we are forgiven because of what Christ did for us on the cross. But because of what Christ did for us, wouldn t we want to share that love that we feel in our hearts with others? Do our actions reflect that? Be aware of what others observe. Not that we are trying to show off, but because of our genuine concern for others that we might reflect the love of Christ that is in us. Dear Lord, please forgive me for the times when I choose my convenience over other s needs, when I show condemnation instead of love, when I turn the other way, or when my desires do not line up with your truths. Help me to desire to do Your will with a loving heart and prompt me to interrupt my daily routine with eyes that are focused on showing Your love to others, so that I may reflect to others who You truly are. ~Gina Martens, Family Life Director Offering and Rite of Fellowship (Please record your attendance on the friendship register in each pew and pass the register down the pew so all may record their attendance.) Prayer of the Church The Lord s Prayer (8:00am) C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. (The 8:00am service will conclude with the Benediction and the closing hymn, Lutheran Service Book # 827 Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling ) Service of the Sacrament (The 10:30 am service continues on p. 208 in Lutheran Service Book.) We believe that in the Lord s Supper our Lord gives to us His true body and blood with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of our sins. We recognize the charge that St. Paul offers in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 that those who come to receive the Lord s Supper ought to examine themselves so that they do not eat and drink in an unworthy manner. Therefore, out of concern for those who have not been instructed in the faith or who hold to a different confession, we ask that only members of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations receive the Sacrament. If you would like to learn more about what our congregation teaches, to inquire about becoming a member or have questions about our practice, please speak to one of the pastors. For those who have problems consuming alcohol, you are invited to receive diluted wine from the purple glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups. For those who have dietary restrictions, gluten free wafers are available upon request. 8 5
