Thanks for the Memories! Submitted by Mary Beckman The residents of Green Ridge Meadows would like to say thank you to the Green Ridge Volunteers! A special thank you goes out to Dwight Souder, who was the moving force behind uncountable meals being served to the residents for the past 21 years. Also many thanks for all the volunteers who have made the meals and spent time with the residents. Memories from Dwight Souder The meals to Green Ridge started in the fall of 1992 when it was realized that while some of the residents at Green Ridge Meadows apartments came to the newly founded community meal at the church, many could not, but would love to have dinner taken over to them. So a group of dedicated volunteers started preparing a meal to take over and serve to the resident at the Green Ridge community room. It was thought of as much as a social activity for them and the volunteers as well as a meal. The volunteers probably averaged serving anywhere from 25 to 45 guests over the years depending on the situation there. We tried to make it inter-generational with Dwight Souder and Marilyn Gildersleeve bringing their children and later Jeff McCarthy bring some of his students from EJHS. Memories from Vickie Borden I started helping in 1999. We had an exchange student that year and he became friends with Dwight and Jean's son, Don. Don invited him to help at Green Ridge one night. He enjoyed it a lot so I started going with him the rest of the time he lived with us. As I started participating I found out it was something I really liked doing. I never stopped helping with it from then on. I like to bake, so I brought cookies or some other kind of dessert pretty much every month. I met so many nice people who lived at Green Ridge over the years. I also got to know Dwight, Jean and Marilyn better from spending one night a month with them. I will really miss serving the people of Green Ridge. The Tenants Thank You. The final meal served by the Green Ridge volunteers, a Supper Extraordinary was held on Thursday, May 9, 2013. Through the years healthy vegetarian dishes comprised the menu with an occasional special meal of fried chicken or ham or beef, a real treat, such as tonight as the scent of chicken fills the air. In the past, Chef Dwight was frequently found cooking in the church kitchen. Tonight, and right on time at 5:15, cars, and hot food in steaming pots and large bowls began to arrive along with fresh bread and wonderful desserts, as volunteers tracked back and forth from cars to the community room where tables and chairs had been arranged by residents. Lively chatter, socialization and friendship filled the hall as a flurry of residents would be served. The volunteers had become friends as they intermingled with the residents. What a privilege! Everyone will miss Dwight and his crew! Thank you to all the volunteers, through the years, listed below are some of the regulars.
