Rebecca Jordan Heys Organist: Kenneth Bos Ministry of Music: The Wheaton Academy Choir Conductor: Helen Westerfield Student Conductor: Max Anliker Scripture Reader: Grace Spoelma Calvin CRC Announcements for April 8, 2018 WORSHIP Today, 10 AM and 5 PM Morning worship: Rev. Rebecca Jordan Heys continues our series on the Christian spiritual disciplines with a sermon from Deuteronomy 11:18-21 on the discipline of study. Part of this morning's prelude on The Day of Resurrection was composed by Ann Slowins, a friend and regular attendee of Calvin Church who recently passed away. It is presented today to remind us of the Easter hope that we have in Jesus Christ and particularly for those who have recently lost loved ones. This morning we welcome the Wheaton Academy Concert Choir to lead us musically in our worship. Founded in 1853, Wheaton Academy is a Christian, college-preparatory high school with 630 students in West Chicago, IL. Known as a singing school, its Choral Music Department currently has over 100 students enrolled in four choral ensembles and three extracurricular a cappella groups. The Concert Choir is thrilled to be able to share their passion for music this weekend not only with Calvin Church but also with Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Guiding Light Mission, and Covenant Village, and they also will enjoy singing in collaboration with the Calvin College Gospel Choir. The Worship Committee is soliciting song suggestions from our young people to use in our worship services. This morning we will be singing #177, which was requested by Grace Spoelma.

Evening worship: We welcome Beverly Weeks to lead us in worship with a sermon from Isaiah 1. We gather in the sanctuary. WORSHIP Next Sunday, April 15 Morning worship: We will welcome the Rev. Neal Plantinga, who will preach from Colossians 3:1-4, 12-14, Clothed with Humility. Our offering will be for the Ministry Fund. Evening worship: The Rev. Laura Smit will lead our time of worship, and the offering will be for Home Repair Services. Staff News: Pastor Rebecca will be taking study leave to attend the Calvin Festival of Faith and Writing and will be out of the office April 12-18. COUNCIL NEWS The Council is grateful for those who have agreed to serve as Elder and Deacon. We plan to share their names in the April 15 bulletin, and we plan to request the congregation's vote of affirmation for these names at a congregational meeting on April 22. If you received a nomination letter and have not yet responded, please contact Mark DeKoster or Walter DeBoer today. Also, on April 22, candidate Brad Zwiers will preach at our morning worship service and engage in conversation with the congregation after worship. The congregation will be invited at a later date to vote on extending a call to Brad to serve as our Minister of Faith Formation. CHURCH FAMILY The flowers in the sanctuary today have been given by Diane and Bill Woolsey in celebration of their forty-sixth wedding anniversary. We are most grateful to the Calvin Church family for your support, prayers, cards, and concern during Chris illness and her death. Special thanks to our pastors for visits made to our home and the hospital. Additional words cannot express how thankful we are for your prayers and support. Don Ekdom and family A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Calvin Church for the many expressions of support and comfort at the passing of LeRoy s mother, Evelyn Stegink. Please accept our deepest and sincerest thanks. LeRoy and Anjean Stegink, Curt, Gwen, Hannah, and Nick Overbeek Thank you for the kind thoughts and good wishes I received for my birthday. MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES, AND EVENTS Today ADULT EDUCATION: Even Border Walls Need Gates Presenter: Daniel Miller. When it comes to immigration policy, it wouldn t be much of an exaggeration to say that the United States is schizophrenic sometimes it wants them to come, sometimes it wants them to leave, and sometimes it wants both things at the same time. And always there is a reluctance to acknowledge how much the U.S. itself is responsible for their presence here. Next Sunday ADULT EDUCATION: The Struggle for Control of Jerusalem Presenter: Bob DeVries. President Trump s recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel once again shows what a flashpoint Jerusalem has become in Israeli-Palestinian relations. Why and how has Jerusalem become such a flashpoint? What are the possible repercussions of the President s decision about Jerusalem for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and for regional political dynamics? What is the significance of the recent UN vote to condemn the US decision on Jerusalem?
