Derek G. Lawson Email: DLawson@churchofscotland.org.uk Phone: 010 412 5709 or 06 3059 9641 ******************** A Prayer for Advent God our Saviour, walk toward us on a path of peace; encourage us, in our loneliness and yearning, take us in your arms and lift us up, enable us to receive your goodness and grace, to perceive your glory already around us, here and now, and to believe that justice and peace can indeed go hand in hand. Amen. From Advent Readings from Iona

Order of Service for the 1st Sunday in Advent 3rd December 2017 Sacrament of Holy Communion Call to Worship Psalm 80:17 (congregational lines in bold) Hear us, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock. You who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine forth before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh. Awaken your might; come and save us. Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved. How long, LORD God Almighty, will your anger smoulder against the prayers of your people? You have fed them with the bread of tears; you have made them drink tears by the bowlful. You have made us an object of derision to our neighbours, and our enemies mock us. Restore us, God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved. Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand, the son of man you have raised up for yourself. Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name. Restore us, LORD God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved. Introit: Magnificat Taizé, Jacques Berthier (Choir) Magnificat Magnificat. Magnificat anima mea Dominum Magnificat Magnificat. Magnificat anima mea (Sing out my soul, Sing out my soul, Sing out and glorify the Lord who sets us free.) Welcome & Prayer of Approach

Praise: O come, O come, Emmanuel (MP 493) 1 O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear. Rejoice, rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. 2 O come, O come, Thou Lord of might, who to Thy tribes, on Sinai s height in ancient times didst give the law in cloud and majesty and awe. Rejoice, rejoice... 3 O come, Thou rod of Jesse, free Thine own from Satan s tyranny; from depths of hell Thy people save, and give them victory o er the grave. Rejoice, rejoice... 4 O come, Thou dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by Thine advent here; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death s dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice, rejoice... 5 O come, Thou key of David, come and open wide our heavenly home; make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery. Rejoice, rejoice... Lighting of the 1 st Advent Candle a Candle of Hope Hymn: A candle is burning (Tune of Away in a manger )

1. A candle is burning, a flame warm and bright, a candle of hope in December s dark night. While angels sing blessings from heaven s starry sky, our hearts we prepare now for Jesus is nigh. Blessing on the Children Prayer of Confession concluding with The Lord s Prayer Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Praise: The voice of God goes out to all the world (CH4 283) Tune: Woodlands, No.286 1.The voice of God goes out to all the world; his glory speaks across the universe. The great King s herald cries from star to star: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 2.The Lord has said: Receive my messenger, my promise to the world, my pledge made flesh, a lamp to every nation, light from light : with power, with justice, he will walk his way.

3.The broken reed he will not trample down, nor set his heel upon the dying flame. He binds the wounds, and heals with his strong hand: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 4.Anointed with the Spirit and with power, he comes to crown with comfort all the weak, to show the face of justice to the poor: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. 5.His touch will open eyes that darkness held; the lame shall run, the halting tongue shall sing, and prisoners laugh in light and liberty: with power, with justice, he will walk his way. Readings: 1 Corinthians 1: 3 9 (p. 1144) 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 4 I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge 6 God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Mark 13: 24 37 (p. 1019) 24 But in those days, following that distress, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; 25 the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.

26 At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. 28 Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that itis near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. 32 But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35 Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: Watch! Reflection Praise: Lo, he comes with clouds descending (MP 424) 1 Lo! He comes, with clouds descending, once for favoured sinners slain: thousand thousand saints attending swell the triumph of His train; hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah! God appears on earth to reign. 2 Every eye shall now behold Him robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at nought and sold Him,

pierced, and nailed Him to the tree, deeply wailing... shall the true Messiah see. 3 Now redemption, long expected, see in solemn pomp appear! All His saints, by man rejected, now shall meet Him in the air. Hallelujah... see the day of God appear. 4 Yea, amen! let all adore Thee high on Thy eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom of Thine own; hallelujah... everlasting God, come down! Offering & Prayer of Dedication Anthem: Let all mortal flesh keep silence (Choir) 1.Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly minded, for with blessing in His hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. 2.King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood; he will give to all the faithful his own self for heav'nly food. 3.Rank of rank the host of heaven

spreads its vanguard on the way, as the light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the pow'rs of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. 4.At His feet the six winged seraph, Cherubim with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry; Alleluia, Alleluia Alleluia, Lord most high! Church News Prayers for Others Elder Invitation to the Lord s Table Praise: Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us (MP 435) 1 Lord Jesus Christ, You have come to us, You are one with us, Mary s son; cleansing our souls from all their sin, pouring Your love and goodness in: Jesus, our love for You we sing living Lord! 2 Lord Jesus Christ, now and every day teach us how to pray, Son of God; You have commanded us to do this in remembrance, Lord, of You: into our lives Your power breaks through living Lord! 3 Lord Jesus Christ, You have come to us, born as one of us, Mary s son;

led out to die on Calvary, risen from death to set us free: living Lord Jesus, help us see You are Lord! 4 Lord Jesus Christ, I would come to You, live my life for You, Son of God; all Your commands I know are true, Your many gifts will make me new: into my life Your power breaks through living Lord! Prayer and Words of Institution Prayer of Thanksgiving which begins: May God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to Christ. Let us give thanks to our Redeemer. It is right to give our thanks and praise. And in which please say, after the words, your people in heaven and earth, saying: Holy, holy, holy One, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Glory be to you, O God most high. Blessed is one who comes in the name of the Saviour. Hosanna in the highest! Then, before the distribution of the bread and wine: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace. Praise: Christ is coming! Tune: Regent Square (CH4 475) 1 Christ is coming! let creation from her groans and travail cease; let the glorious proclamation hope restore and faith increase:

Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Come now, blessèd Prince of Peace. 2 Earth can now but tell the story of your bitter cross and pain; she shall yet behold your glory; in your coming back to reign: Christ is coming! Christ is coming! 'Come, Lord Jesus, come again!' 3 Long your exiles have been pining, far from you, and rest, and home: but, in heavenly glory shining, soon their loving Lord shall come: Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Haste the joyous jubilee. 4 With that blessèd hope before us, harps be played and songs be sung; let the mighty advent chorus onward roll from tongue to tongue: 'Christ is coming! Christ is coming! Come, Lord Jesus, quickly come!' Benediction and 3fold Amen Go now in peace Go now in peace, never be afraid, God will go with you each hour of every day. Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true. Know he will guide you in all you do. Go now in love and show you believe. Reach out to others so all the world can see. God will be there watching from above. Go now in peace, in faith and in love.
