P A R T 1 Exodus 1-19
God's Unique Identity 1. Covenant-Keeping God Exodus 6:5 says God acted in Exodus because he remembered his covenant with Abraham, Issac and Jacob 2. Utterly Supreme Moses tells Pharaoh in 8:10: "Be it as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the Lord our God." 3. Great Warrior Moses' song in 15:2-3 tells us that this is what God's defeating the Egyption army is all about 4. Caring Provider When Israel is hungry, God feeds them. Why? 16:2 "Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God
The Pattern of Redemption Oppressed in Slavery The exodus is the salvation of God's people out of something: in this case, out of tyrannical captivity The Lord Acts to Save The concept of redemption refers to purchasing freedom for a slave. The death of the Passover lamb is the ransom price for the rstborn sons of Israel Lead to a Promised Land Israel is rescued out of slavery with the intent of taking them into a land where they can worship as God's people in God's place under God's rule.
God's Gracious Provision of a Substitutionary Sacri ce
God's Special People But they are off to a bad start At the end of the Exodus, the "Son of God" - Israel - miraculously passes through the waters of the Red Sea (14) * * * But, in 16:8 they grumble against the Lord because they have no food to eat In 16:2, they begin to march through the desert wilderness * * * In 17:2, they put the Lord to the test when they quarrel with Moses about not having water to drink * * * While God was giving Moses the 10 commandments that forbade idolatry, the people worship a golden calf and call it their god
Israel vs. Christ as God's Son Israel & the Exodus Miraculously passes through the waters of the Red Sea They march through the desert wilderness They grumble because they have no food to eat They put the Lord to the test in quarrelling with Moses They worship a golden calf as their god Christ's Temptations Jesus passes through the waters of baptism and is called God's Son Christ went into the desert to be tempted His rst temptation: not having food to eat His second temptation: to "test" God His nal temptation: to worship someone other than God
God's Glorious Motive Purpose of the plagues 9:29 "The thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth is the Lord's" Judgement of Egypt at the Red Sea 14:4 "And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord." Hardening Pharaoh's Heart 9:16 "But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth."
