It hppened to Thoms Becket in Cnterbury Cthedrl, s he stood t the ltr of Mry, the gleming bldes of the king s men striking him over nd over, until his blood stined the stones of the snctury. It hppened to scr Romero, s he stood in the pulpit of the hospitl chpel in Sn Slvdor, where the soldier entered from the street, nd fired his rifle, piercing the hert of the bishop nd spilling his blood on the book of the gospels. And it hppened this week, when Fther Jcques Hmel, who hd ust finished offering mss for the four people gthered with him in the church of St.-Étienne-du-Rouvry, ws killed by two teengers, rmed with knives nd procliming themselves s soldiers of ISIS. Grbbing the 85 yer old priest, they mde him kneel t the ltr, where they slit his throt. Unlike Becket or Romero, Fr. Hmel ws not bishop nor mn of gret importnce in the eyes of the world; he ws n old, semiretired priest, known for his gentleness nd oy, whose ccomplishments were smll, importnt only to those he hd served. Yet, s Fr. Jcques blood flowed out cross the floor of tht smll church, it blended with the blood of Romero nd Becket, with the blood of Frns vn der Lugt nd Mximillin Kolbe, with the blood of Jon of Arc nd Edmund Cmpion, with the blood of Agth nd Lucy, Pul nd Stephen; it becme prt of tht living river tht flows bck to the cross of Christ, the first of mrtyrs, whose blood ws shed in testimony to God s mercy, in witness ginst the violence of this world. In the moment of his deth, the blood of this simple French priest becme one with the Scrment he hd consumed only few minutes before, the Scrment in which we shre the the blood of the new nd eternl covennt poured out for the forgiveness of

sins. Despite the designs of his murderers who sought, in the drkness of their violence, to terrorize nd to destroy wht poured forth from the wounds of this priest ws, insted, promise of love tht is greter thn hte, of mercy tht is stronger thn vengence, of life tht will overcome the power of deth. Throughout this summer, we hve been struck, time nd gin, by the viciousness of this world from rlndo to Nice, from Kbul to Dlls, from the killing of unrmed blck men in the streets to the murder of country priest t the ltr of his church. We hve felt the world tilt beneth our feet, s though nothing were secure, nothing sfe. We hve listened with nger or dred s demgogues hve fnned the flmes of discord in our lnd, seeking to scre us into scrificing liberty for the flse security of the slve. We hve wtched s the filed policies of power hve sought pece by incresing wr: by drone ttcks nd shelling, by more guns in our streets nd more wlls between our peoples. We hve seen gret ntions drw bck from prtnership with others, nd free peoples divided by rce nd religion. And, in the midst of these gret events, these tidl shifts, mny of us hve felt bndoned nd lone, crying out like the people of ncient Isrel: Where is our God? his promises of mercy nd to the hope offered by his resurrection. For some mrtyrs, like Becket or Romero, their deth ws crowning testimony of prophetic life; but for others, such s Fr. Hmel, their deth itself testifies to deeper truth, never stted by them, but expressed in their very wy of life. In the constncy of his compssion; in the ordinriness of his service; in the fct tht he rose ech morning in obscurity, to sy his pryers nd minister to the people of God whom he found ner him, Fr. Hmel gives witness to the God of smll things, the God who (s Hopkins sys) veins violets nd tll trees mkes more nd more. He did not seek deth on the fields of bttle nor by gret cts of vlor, but when deth cme, he ws where he hd promised to be: mong the People of God, in service nd in love. God is t work tody, in ech one of us. My we ber witness to God s love nd hope nd mercy in ll we sy nd do. Jcques Hmel, pry for us. And the nswer is: God is t work. At work in the fther teching his dughter to ride her bike without trining wheels, or in the mother tking her son to his first dy of college. At work in the young girl leving the est cost for the first time to oin the JVC in Settle, or in the couple prepring to commit themselves to one nother in mrrige. God is t work in the unior high student prepring to go to the Skgit Vlley on Agpé, nd in the elder visiting homebound friend with couple of sndwiches nd n hour of stories. God is t work in the young writer helping resident of Tent City crft her story, nd in the lwyer who spends morning cooking eggs for some neighbors to shre. God is t work in the ICU nurse who trcks down priest for fmily in the middle of the night, becuse she sees they re worried. And in the son, holding his mother s hnd when she goes home to God. God is t work in hiker, stnding in we t mountin lke, nd in child, chsing fter butterfly in the bckyrd. God is t work in the old priest, sying mss in obscurity, nd in the lonely hert of young mn, mde def by his resentment nd his loneliness. God is t work in every humn being, in every hert tht longs for connection nd purpose, for identity nd communion.
