7 June 2015 The Diocese of Rockville Centre Wants You To Know... 4 th Annual Fortnight For Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness Designated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Freedom of conscience is the core of all freedom. - Pope Benedict XVI Today, America s rights of conscience are routinely vilified and denied. In schools- children are told they can t bring their religious beliefs into their writing and speech. A 5 th grade girl on Long Island was told she could not pray her rosary at lunchtime or she would be sent to the principal s office. A 4 th grader wrote about Jesus so his teacher called him in, tore up his essay and said, We don t write about Jesus in this school. You have to write another essay. In the military - Walter Reed Military Medical Center issued guidelines in 2011stating, "No religious items, Bibles, etc. are allowed to be given away or used during a visit." In Texas, officials at Houston's national cemetery barred any religious services at graveside and ignored denunciations by Congress and families. In business- Florists, bakers and photographers are fined, prosecuted and driven out of business for following their consciences in declining to celebrate same sex unions. In religious organizations- The Little Sisters of the Poor are told they are not religious enough to be exempt from the Health and Human Services Mandate requiring them to provide contraception, sterilization and abortion inducing drugs to their employees or face bankrupting fines. Catholic hospitals, charities and universities face the same heavy hand of regulation denying deeply held religious beliefs. The United States Constitution and Bill of Rights have protected freedom of conscience and religion for over two hundred years. Tragically, Americans became complacent about their religious freedom. Pope Francis reminds us, Freedom is a gift and a personal responsibility. It is a challenge held out to each generation and it must constantly be won over for the sake of good. Getting ready for Graduation. Our Teens are becoming Young Adults starting college with a lifetime of opportunities in front of them. We would like to help our Teens keep a faith connection while they are in college. Many will be away from home and out on their own, what better way to help them stay grounded and give them a safe place to meet new friends than through the Newman Connection. Newman Centers are Catholic ministry centers at non-catholic universities throughout the world. They provide pastoral services and ministries to their Catholic student population. If you would like to make that connection, all you need to do is send an email to Barbara McNulty at youth@stjosephsbabylon.org Include your teens first & last name and the name of the college or university they will be attending in the fall. The information will be forwarded to the proper Newman Center and your teen will be welcomed in the fall when they arrive at their school. Simple. And a great way to keep our teens connected. 12

7 June 2015 Calling All Young Adults... ATTENTION YOUNG ADULTS You are invited! TO: FAITH ON TAP All Young Adults are invited to join us for a night of Fellowship & Faith WHEN: Monday, June 15 th at Lily Flanagans, in Babylon at 7:30pm Arrive at 7pm for some food & fellowship. Come catch up with friends, and meet new ones! WHERE: Lily Flanagans, in Babylon Topic: Is there a God? Sharing a journey to the truth, detours & all! Speaker: Deacon Barry Croce Deacon Barry will share his own journey of faith, and talk to us about roadblocks, detours, and grace-filled moments which we all experience. During his last year of studies at the seminary, Barry suggested the class motto be Don t take yourself too seriously and that is how he lives out his life and his vocation. He considers his faith to be the greatest gift from the Lord. He would then list his wife, four children and 2 grandchildren as their own special gifts. Barry has embraced many ministries including Youth Ministry, Altar Servers and Pre-Cana, and he is always available to all, from our children to our golden-agers. 17

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Sunday - Cycle B Deacon s Corner Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, I believe, actually I know our God communicates with us all the time. If we believe our Lord loves us why wouldn t this loving God communicate with us? However, much of the time this communication occurs in natural ways that may be easy for most of us to overlook, such as when someone is inspired to speak to us. Recently my daughter shared with me she was having a tough day. In the evening her daughter, our granddaughter Gianna, who is seven years old was lying in bed listening to the radio. My daughter went into the bedroom to tell her it was time to turn off the radio and go to sleep. Gianna turned off the radio and then looked at her mom and said: Don t worry mommy. When things aren t going good it just means God isn t done working on that problem yet. Amen! Out of the mouths of babes Then there are the ways our God communicates with us that are well, supernatural. Captain Scott O Grady was a captain in the U.S. Air force flying missions over Bosnia during the terrible sectarian violence that broke out in that country in 1995. O Grady was one of two Air Force F-16 pilots patrolling the United Nations designated no-fly zone when his cockpit warning alarm suddenly sounded. The onboard radar tracked three surface-to-air missiles launched from the ground. Two of them missed the fighter jets, but the third missile hit O Grady s plane directly behind his seat. O Grady remembers the sound of the impact and the flash the searing heat of the flames. He pulled his ejection lever, and to his astonishment, it worked. He was catapulted into the sky, nearly five miles above the Earth. O Grady managed to land unscathed, and found cover in a nearby patch of woods, where he dodged capture for six days and nights. O Grady, a Catholic since birth, says those six days and nights were the most intense and sustained period of prayer of his life. On his third day on the ground, halfway through the experience, O Grady says something miraculous happened. He had been thinking about the village of Medjugorje, a Bosnian town that is a pilgrimage site for Catholics from all over the world. Many Catholics believe the Virgin Mary has been appearing to six village children now young adults every evening for more than a decade. O Grady said he had never bought into the phenomenon of miracles and apparitions attributed to Medjugorje. But he decided to send up a prayer in honor of the village, which was less than 100 miles from O Grady s location. O Grady has difficulty articulating what happened next. You have to understand there are no words to describe the feeling, he said in 1996, while describing his experience just a few months earlier. It s not like I saw someone walking in the forest, but I saw something. It was a shimmering image. But the image was insignificant compared to the feeling that accompanied it. O Grady said it was as if the warmest arms he d ever felt came around him and through him. The feeling of love and warmth permeated his body. He said if one could will the feeling to happen, one would never leave it. O Grady said he knew in an instant that it was coming from God, and that whether he lived or died, I was God s child, and I was going to be OK. O Grady says it took away his fear of death. I realized that to die, is actually to gain. O Grady says the mountain-top feeling eventually ebbed, but left him on a spiritual high, that sustained him through his final days on the ground. On the sixth day, after making radio contact with O Grady, an elite team of Marines moved in with a chopper, dodged enemy fire and whisked O Grady out of Bosnia to safety. At a press conference following a triumphant reunion with his family and rescue team, O Grady told the waiting reporters, If it wasn t for my love for God and God s love for me, I wouldn t be here right now, and I know that in my heart. He says he still felt the spiritual high of what he calls his epiphany in the forest. But weeks later, it was replaced with a feeling of guilt. O Grady felt guilty for not sustaining the level of prayer that had seen him though his Bosnian ordeal. He confessed it to a priest who told him, Scott, God was there for you in the intensity you needed, when you needed it. He s gone on to someone else in need with that intensity now. But He s always there. He s as close as your next prayer. God is as close as our next prayer. Amen. Deacon Barry 18

7 June 2015 Reflections DON T BUMP THE STUMP After Super Storm Sandy, there were three relatively small trees that had various parts come down in in our yard. When the debris was finally removed, we had the cut down and all that remained were three unattractive stumps standing not so proudly along our property line. Each time I would pull in the driveway, I would see these barren, fading stumps staring at me, almost wondering why I still gave them some space on our property. (Had they not been trees all their lives, they would have known that my propensity to procrastinate is without equal and any fleeting thought I had of their removal was just that fleeting.) In my mind they would be safe until the next owner comes around. One of the blights on our society is how we treat our aging. We have long lived in a very disposable world where we look to replace things the moment they seem to lose some of their initial allure. We do so with electronic devices, food containers, and even spouses. We fail to treasure things that slow down, never acknowledging that they are probably more dependable in the long run; however, because something seemingly better comes along and catches our eye, we feel compelled to gain the instant satisfaction of knowing we are more than keeping up with the Joneses by treating ourselves to the newest toy. It is not that way in all cultures. Sometimes the same thing happens to our seniors. Families, not all of them, see those aging members as people to avoid rather than cherish. As one who is newly arrived in that category, I am suggesting that there may still be a great deal of life left in all of us who may have shed a leaf or two. Perhaps it was this past winter when we thought the snows would never melt and filled the ground with such moisture. Perhaps it was just a case of literally being a late bloomer. When I pulled in the driveway one day recently, I suddenly noticed new life in one of those (not so) barren, fading stumps. God, the Author of Life, continually reminds us that all life is sacred and that we must do all we can to preserve the lives of everyone...especially those who seem to be fading. PRAYER Loving and Generous Father, life is the greatest gift You have given to each of us, yet sometimes we do not care for it as we should As we pray, give us the Grace we need to treasure this gift, not only for ourselves but for all around us the aging, the homeless, the hungry, the addicted. Each is made in Your image and likeness and is loved in Your eyes. Can we do any less? This we ask in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Stewardship... Stewardship Sound Byte We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who prioritize their gift of time to include weekly Eucharist. 19
