Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH February 12, 2017 Welcome A warm welcome is extended to all who have come to worship the Lord through the study of the Scriptures this morning. May we sense His presence as we wait before Him, and may we be ready to heed His voice as He speaks through His Word and by His Spirit. Spiritual Victory God s desire for His children is for each one to walk in holiness. However, our enemy does not want us to experience daily spiritual victory and knows where to aim his fiery darts. Perhaps the greatest obstacle to daily victory over sin is the secret sin in our lives. We justify our bosom sins, keep them hidden and secretly feed them. Hidden sins drain us physically and emotionally. They destroy our witness, ruin our relationships and wound us spiritually. On top of all that, Scripture says that we must deal with our sin before God hears our prayers. There is only one way to deal with our secret sin and that is to attack it full force. This is warfare. The moment the sinful thought or desire enters the heart or mind, we must give it the ax. When we sincerely ask for God s help, He will deliver us. Practice Love Surely, all of us are aware that Tuesday, February 14 is Valentine s Day, a day in which loved ones exchange cards, candy, flowers, and gifts. The history of how this day became associated with romance is shrouded in mystery, although there are several legends, which contain vestiges of both Catholic and ancient Roman tradition. However, the One who is love has already written everything we need to know about love in His Word. As His beloved children, it should be our goal to love others as Christ has loved us and that takes commitment. To love others also takes much practice. May we determine to practice acts of love to those God puts in our path each day, whether that should be our parents, siblings, spouse, children, co-workers, neighbors, friends or clerk at the grocery store. God will be glorified through our obedience to love one another. Heartbeat 3

New Kitchen Project Gale Engle The main kitchen off the Family Center is used more than any other space in the building (except the restrooms). Although it has served us well these past 41 years, it is clearly deteriorating and in need of a major renovation. When the kitchen was built in 1976, interest rates were at 18% and we bought the cheapest cupboards and drawers we could find. They are now flaking sawdust and sagging under the weight of the wedding dishes. The cabinets and drawers have been buttressed and pampered along, but they are breaking down. If we can get the weight out of them, they will last longer. The kitchen is also hot, which makes serving for weddings and funerals a sweaty job. Although the oven/range is relatively new, it is residential, not commercial, and is not big enough for what we want to do when catering junior and senior high banquets, preparing food for the Pinewood Derby, or other special events. Also, with just one entry/exit door, traffic flow is a problem when more than a few workers are needed. On top of all that, the electrical wiring is inadequate. There are not enough electrical outlets to plug in all the crock pots when Sunday school classes have a potluck gathering. The old dishwasher is failing and it is impossible to clean the backsplashes. To sum it all up, our kitchen is on its last leg, there is a lack of storage space, and a plan for the future is needed. Continued on page 5 ADA s drawing of new kitchen project 4 Heartbeat

Continued from page 4 Kitchen Project To make things easier for everyone who serves in the kitchen, our trusty kitchen stewards (Merrily Bailey, Sandy Frahm, and Jackie Southwick) came up with some ideas. One of the first things they did was collect information from the many ministries using the kitchen. They came up with a wish list. After analyzing the list, it was obvious that the cost of remodeling the existing kitchen would be similar to completing the new kitchen. Space Dedicated for a New Kitchen When the Bible Learning Center was built in 2000, space was dedicated for a future, updated kitchen on the east side of the Family Center. Providentially, Architectural Design Associates planned for two doors on both sides of the kitchen for easy entrance and exit. The kitchen also has three large windows on the Family Center side. Another large window that opens to the Bible Learning Center hallway will be added. The new kitchen will have an island with an oven/range and exhaust hood, as well as an island for food preparation. The plans provide for better ventilation, a commercial dishwasher (in its own room to contain heat and moisture), a deep sink and second sink, additional storage, lots of outlets for crock pots, and more room for freezers and fridges. Since cabinets are expensive, Maintenance Director, Kevin Wheat is researching whether to build them himself, or buy part of them and build part. The Board of Elders has decided that we should do as much of the work as possible to save on the expense. Remodel the Existing Kitchen or Complete the New Kitchen? Completing the new kitchen has definite advantages. To begin, it has much more space, plus windows to both the Bible Learning Center and the Family Center. Completing the new kitchen also allows Girls of Grace and Titus Tuesday to continue in the existing kitchens while the new kitchen is completed. If we were to remodel the existing kitchen, the electrical wiring would need to be updated. Besides new cabinets, countertops and backsplashes, some new equipment is needed. Remodeling would also force changes for the ministries using the kitchen. What Is the Cost? According to Kevin, the cost of completing the new kitchen will be $170,000. A lot of this expense is due to the fire hood over the stove, which lumped together with the HVAC and make-up air unit costs $60,000. Heartbeat 5

How Would You Describe Love? Valentine s Day is the day we give friends and loved ones a card. Special friends may receive chocolates or a gift. This year, while everyone is focused on valentines, consider giving a gospel tract with some home-made cookies, or a small box of chocolates. Even a small candy bar would add a little sweetness. God s love for us was proven at Calvary and it has echoed through the ages, calling sinners to repent and believe. The gospel reaches us wherever we are and cuts through false beliefs and a life-time of baggage. It is impossible to resist and brings incomparable peace. Oh how we long for our loved ones and acquaintances to be brought into God s fold. A new gospel tract, just in time for Valentine s Day shows that God has given the greatest demonstration of love the world could ever witness the cross of Christ. The timing of this tract could not be better. Pick up as many as you need and give them away with love, a prayer, and a little chocolate. The tracts are available at the main entrances. The tract was written by Adam and Elizabeth Flaugh and designed by John Scholle. This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends (John 15:12, 13). 6 Heartbeat

Men s Retreat 2017 THE REFORMATION With Dr. Manfred Kober Friday & Saturday, February 17 & 18 Leadership Center in Aurora, Nebraska Martin Luther and the Reformation The selling of indulgences was a sign to Luther that the Catholic Church was in opposition to the Bible. Infuriated by this assault on God s Martin Luther grace, Luther began working on his 95 Theses (a list of propositions demonstrating errors in the Catholic Church), which sparked the Protestant Reformation. Bible Resources for Everyone The church website (www. ihcc.org) has many resources for the Bible student. We currently have around 2,000 of Gil s messages available as well as messages from other speakers and classes. These messages can be listened to, watched, or downloaded at your convenience. If you would like to get Bible teaching on your mobile device, download the Sound Words app to your iphone or Android device. You will have access to a multitude of resources for your personal Bible study. It is our hope that these study materials will aid you in your study of the Scriptures and bring you to a closer understanding and walk with the Lord. Heartbeat 9
