Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 2, 2015 Sacred Heart, Manchester St. John the Baptist, Essex 6 th Annual Father Jack Clergy Cookout Held at Tucks Point July 24 th Hosted by Parishioners of Sacred Heart, Manchester By the Sea and St. John s Essex and Masconomo Council 1232 Knights of Columbus Six years ago Father Jack Gentleman recognized in Manchester-by the Sea a unique opportunity to honor the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Boston, especially those confined to, Regina Cleri, the retirement home in Boston s West End. Accordingly he proposed to parishioners of Sacred Heart and St. John s that they sponsor and host a cookout at the Tucks Point Chowder House to give the retired priests, many elderly and infirm, an enjoyable day away on the North Shore at beautiful Tucks Point, adjacent to Manchester Harbor. For the past six years parishioners have volunteered their time and efforts to make the Cookout a success. Also supported by Masconomo Council 1232 Knights of Columbus, each year more than 100 retired priests have been drawn to the Father Jack Gentleman inspired event. Pastor Father Jack died in January of this year, but his tribute outing for retired priest continues and is now called the Father Jack Clergy Cookout. Father Paul Flammia, his friend and successor as pastor/administrator of the two parishes hosted this year s cookout at The Chowder House. Though ominous storm clouds and torrential rain threatened our festive event for a short time, we were rewarded by a double rainbow and clear skies for the cookout noted Father Flammia. This outing is a much awaited day out and reunion for these retired priests, who served long in the vineyard. Many were Father Jack s mentors and inspiration on his faith journey. For their long service and commitment to God and their faith communities, they are my role models. The parishes of Sacred Heart and St. John are pleased to give them this Thank You and this annual outing to enjoy the tranquil beauty of Tucks Point. We were pleased to welcome everyone who enjoyed our cookout, but we were especially delighted to greet former pastors Father Wallace Blackwood and Father James Harrington, respected priests much missed as shepherds to their flocks in Manchester-by the Sea and Essex. It was great to see them both, declared Father Flammia. Tom Finn, Grand Knight Masconomo Council1232, Knights of Columbus, pointed out the Annual Father Jack Clergy Cookout draws support from both parishes and from throughout the Cape Ann communities. These men, many now the victims of age and ill health, were once vigorous leaders in parish life and academia living and preaching the Word of God for the betterment of man. These cookouts are but a small token of respect to salute their service. 4

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 2, 2015 Sacred Heart, Manchester St. John the Baptist, Essex Fr. Jack Gentleman Memorial 6th Annual Clergy Tuck s Point Cookout Friday, July 24, 2015 What a great time was had on Friday night at Tuck s Point in celebration of the Fr. Jack Memorial Clergy Cookout! Over 40 priests gathered together for fellowship and conversation under beautiful skies, until a brief shower and then a double rainbow appeared (Fr. Jack sent?) for all to see! Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for sponsoring this event as well as a huge thank you to all who came to help set-up, serve and clean-up as well before the skies opened up with drenching rain. Fr. Paul looks forward to hosting this wonderful evening again next year. 5

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 2, 2015 Sacred Heart, Manchester St. John the Baptist, Essex Women of the Well We're grateful for the new face we've seen stepping up to The Well lately. We know it's EARLY on a Saturday morning, but give it a try if you happen to be up and awake some Saturday. There's no commitment to come constantly thereafter! Also: rumor has it there are those who would come if we did something in the evening...and it's being considered. Saturdays, 7:30-9:00 AM in St. John's rectory. No requirement other than being interested women on the journey. Weekly After-Mass Social Visitors and Parishioners, please join us for the weekly social each week after the 8:30 am mass. We have great food and great conversation. This is a great way to become part of the community and for the community to flourish. Beginning in May, we will begin to have social on the church lawn for the summer months. (In inclement weather, we will still have social inside the Parish Hall). Join us each week even if only for a few minutes. You are part of the community, so your presence is very important to us! Mary s Circle Mary s Circle has ended for the summer and we joyfully look forward to starting up again in the Fall. Please consider joining this faith formation community as we explore God, the precepts of our Faith, how our Faith connects to our lives, and other 'questions of the universe'...we share conversation, coffee (or tea), and confections...as our thought provoking conversations revolve around matters of our faith. Please extend an invitation to someone you know who might be interested in a women centered, faith-sharing group. We have read books, had guest speakers, and enjoyed a couple of social gatherings...please consider this a personal invitation to join this group of faith-filled women as we explore the different aspects of our faith and how it connects to us in relevant and familiar ways. Coffee, Confections, and Conversation are the orders of the day. Call Chris at the parish office for more information. Prayer Shawl Ministry Our ministry continues to knit and crochet beautiful shawls and we have given away over 60 shawls. Shawls have been shared with loved ones overseas, across the country, and across town. We love being able to give them away to those who seek comfort. Whether it is a physical illness, a psychological situation, or you know someone who is suffering from a loss of any kind, why not bring him or her a Prayer Shawl? Prayers and blessings for their needs will surround and comfort them. We are continue to knit and crochet these shawls in our homes and together, once a month at the Sacred Heart Rectory. If you know anyone who would like a prayer shawl please let us know. You may contact Chris at the parish office or Gloria Landy, Jane Shaw, Eleanor Hatcher, Sally O Malley, Ann Nadeau, Eileen Hardy, Kathy Anderson, Paige Donohoe, Dorothy Jodice, Ann Henrickson, or Barbara Stasium. The Prayer Shawl ministry meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 4PM in the Sacred Heart Rectory. If you cannot join our ministry, please consider donating money, yarn (preferably soft yarn), or gift bags (to distribute them in). All donations are graciously accepted. We are always looking for more knitters and crochet ers! Experience is not required. Please consider being a part of this ministry. Consider joining us, or making one in the privacy of your home. We have easy to follow patterns. Ministry to the Homebound and Sick Ministry to the Homebound and Sick continues to bring Eucharist to those who cannot make it to Mass. We have an awesome, faith-filled team dedicated to this ministry. Please let us know if you are aware of someone ill, homebound, or alone that would like to receive Eucharist, or a short visit from a fellow parishioner, please contact Chris at the Parish Office and we will make arrangements. Baptism Prep Classes Baptism preparation classes are being held in the Chapel at Sacred Heart Church and is currently offered the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00PM. Please contact the office to make your reservation. These classes are designed for parents and godparents of children about to be baptized. The goal of the class is to help parents become aware of the theological and historical reasons for baptizing your child and the significance of Baptism as a beginning, not an end, to a lifelong commitment. The one hour class explores the purpose of Baptism from both a spiritual and practical standpoint. Ministry of Consolation Our parish has a group of volunteers willing to sit and talk with someone after a loss. Please contact Chris at the parish office to schedule a time to meet. 6
