From 1912-1926, he attended the University of Minnesota; Johns Hopkins University; Stanford University; Yale University and the University of Chicago. He was appointed Professor of English at Tarkio College in 1926, and worked as a cataloger at the University of Chicago Library from 1927-1932. He worked as an archivist for the Missouri Secretary of State from 1936-1962, and as a cataloger for the John G. Neihardt Collection at the University of Missouri from 1963-1966. Knipmeyer was also the archivist for the Missouri National Guard, where he wrote articles on the American Civil War. Gilbert Knipmeyer died in 1981. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The papers have been arranged into the following 6 series: Booklists Civil War Research Material Correspondence Articles Philosophical Extracts Oversize The Booklists series contains a listing of books Gilbert Knipmeyer planned on reading as part of his research. The Articles series consists of newspaper clippings regarding Civil War research, the continued need for a State Archivist, obituaries, an article on the Diamond Anniversary of the Honey Creek Lutheran Church, and an article by Knipmeyer written for the Missouri Guardsman. The articles cover the period 1945-1968. The Philosophical Extracts series consists of statements made by notable individuals throughout history, from ancient times to the twentieth century.
