Giving in to all appetites Our familiarity with Temptation Root: Primal desire to be God These forty days of Lent Jesus in Wilderness refrains Adam and Eve in Eden gorge POJ Bible Study on Genesis 3:1 7 February 21, 2015 with David Forney, Pastor First Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville Garden of Eden A misunderstood story Doctrine-izing Genesis 3 flattens it out What counts in this story is the authority of the One who makes the rules. 1 Genesis 2:15-17 Human life, characterized by: A. Vocation caretakers of the garden B. Permission which plants they could eat C. Prohibition which fruit they should not eat Genesis 3:1-3 Tree in the center, with its amazing fruit There are worse things than not getting what you want Adam and Eve are both the glory and the central problem of creation. 1 That more crafty serpent Exposure: naked and crafty Starts with a simple question Did God say, You shall not eat from any tree in the garden? Genesis 3:4-5 The exposure turns the prohibition into a point of discussion. 1 God, the source of everything, the subject of everything, becomes the object of conversation. Genesis 3:6-7 Temptation: The tree good for food, a delight to the eyes, desired to make one wise Lenten Questions: What tempts you? What do you desire to lord over? A note about fig leaves The real Sovereign God s desire is to map the setting of our lives. Brueggemann: God is the real thing from which and toward which we receive our being and identify ourselves. It follows that the kind of God at work in your life will determine the shape and quality and risk at the center of your existence. It matters who God is. 1 1 Walter Brueggemann, Genesis, John Knox Press, 1982, 40-46. REGISTRATION, DOCKET ---- 4 ORDER OF SERVICE
