ANCIENT CHINESE RELIGIONS

The Three Philosophies of Ancient China 1. Confucianism 2. Taoism (Daoism) 3. Buddhism Why are they called philosophies and not religions?

Confucianism

Confucianism Confucius A person His real name: Kong Fu Zi He lived: 551-479 B.C. He was the founder of Confucianism He developed a a practical philosophy for life and government His teachings are recorded in a book called "The Analects."

Confucius s Ideas Be proper Respect elders Education is important (YAY!!!) Government serves the people; the people don t serve the government. Ancient Chinese traditions

Confucius s Code of Behavior If you are loyal, nice, honest, and obedient then the following relationships will be harmonious and good: 1. Ruler and Citizen 2. Parent and Child 3. Husband and Wife 4. Sibling and Sibling 5. Fiend and Friend

To live by Confucianism: You would have to show absolute respect to parents no matter what. If your parents live by strong virtues and set a good example then you will follow in their footsteps. If everyone did this, this would result in a stable society.

What would a Confucian society look like? What impact would this have on a society? Take 2-3 minutes and explain, describe, list, etc. what a Confucian society would look like. Then explain how Confucianism would impact a society. In other words, what are some things society would (or) would not do.

Daoism or Taoism

Daoism Founder: Lao Zi Lived in the 500s BC He wrote: "The Classic of the Virtue of the Tao."

The Goal Goal of Life: Achieve oneness with Dao What is Dao? A universal force connected to nature that cannot be defined

Daoism Teaches: Humans are a part of nature. Change is a part of every aspect of life. The best way to find peace with yourself is to live simply and harmoniously with nature. Nature guides everything. Government is not important.

Yin and Yang Balancing and harmonizing opposites in nature. Called the Yin and the Yang: Yin: female, earth, dark, and cold Yang: male, sky, light, and heat What do you think this says about women in China?

What would a Taoists society look like? What impact would this have on a society? Take 2-3 minutes and explain, describe, list, etc. what a Taoists society would look like. Then explain how Taoism would impact a society. In other words, what are some things society would (or) would not do.

The 4 Noble Truths The teachings of Buddha 1. Life is suffering 2. Suffering is caused by fame, power, and wealth 3. To end suffering you must overcome desire 4. You must follow the Middle Way to do this

What is the Middle Way? Compassion for all things which leads to calmness and a clear mind

Buddhism Teaches: Reincarnation the idea that when a person dies they come back to life Goal: To attain Nirvana Nirvana The condition of desiring nothing Complete peace When you attain Nirvana you break the cycle of change and you don t get reincarnated anymore Goal: To help others be enlightened
