Lamb of God The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (John 1:29) Sheep are an interesting creature. They re intelligent, but at the same time ignorant; stubborn, and yet completely submissive. They completely trust their shepherd, and will unhesitating respond to his voice. John declares that Jesus is the Lamb of God, not in the sense that He s ignorant or stubborn, but that He s completely submissive to the Father s will. To understand the meaning behind what John was saying, one would do well to examine Old Testament Law; in patrcular, the sacifices made under the Mosaic dispensation. As the children of Israel were parparing for the exodus, God commanded that each family slaughter a lamb, eat the lamb, sprinkley its blood on their doorposts and lintel, and remain within the confirnes of their home until morning so as to escape the wrath of God in the death of the firstborn (Exodus 12:1). This Passover was to be observed every year thereafter as a memorial. Christ is our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7). He became our sacrifice - our substitute - in order that we might be free (Hebrews 9:22-28). He was the Lamb without spot or blemish (1Peter 1:18-19). If we re to escape the wrath of God in Judgment, His blood must be applied to the doorposts of our hearts; that is, we must be obedient to His will and pass through His blood in baptism, entering into the place of safety. His church, remaining therein (Romans 6:3, Revelation 1:5, Galatians 3;2, Acts 2:38). Jesus declared, I am the door; by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved... (John 10:9). Terry R.
