Memory Verse: Bible Point: For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son. - John 3:16 I will follow Jesus all of my days! Coloring Page: John baptizes Jesus. Resource: The Story for Little Ones, Chapter 23: The Power of God

Story Time - Little Miss Spider, Sunny Patch School by David Kirk What You Need: The book, Little Miss Spider, Sunny Patch School by David Kirk What You Do: Gather the children together onto the carpet and read the book, Little Miss Spider, Sunny Patch School. In our story today, we learned about a man named John. John grew up in the desert. There is not much food in the desert. John had to learn to eat all kinds of unusual things. He found some wild bees and was able to eat some of the honey from the honeycomb. He also ate something else that was unusual. John ate bugs! Sometimes people back then would eat locusts. In some places today, people still eat locusts. We don t eat bugs, but, I love stories about bugs. I especially love Little Miss Spider books. Would you like to read a story with me about Little Miss Spider and her friends? Great, let s begin.

Bug Memory What You Need: Honeybee and Locust cards What You Do: Gather the children together and play a fun game of memory. John also wore unusual clothes. He wore animal skins instead of regular clothing. John was a good man. He obeyed and followed God and always tried to do the right thing. God gave John a special job. John s job was to get people ready for Jesus to start preaching.

Follow Jesus: What You Need: Red, blue, green, and yellow colored squares and a picture of Jesus for the leader to hold. What to Do: Before the service: Tape the colored squares up on the wall. Each square should be in a different area of the room. During the service: Assign the children a color and have them stand together by where their color is displayed. Tell them that when you call their color, the children standing in that color section should follow you right away!! The first time have the children just follow you as you march around the room and sing the song below. Other ideas are to have the children jump like a kangaroo, hop like a rabbit, crawl like a bear, etc...the final time have the children say the memory verse as they march around the room. We are going to play a really fun game where you will follow Jesus as you march around the room. When I call your color you are going to line up behind the leader and march around the room. The first time we are going to just march and sing a really simple song to show you how it is done. Are you ready to follow Jesus? Yeah, here we go. A marching we will go (Replace the words to the song, The Bear went over the Mountain) A marching we will go A marching we will go Jesus said to follow A marching we will go

Here s the Point What You Need: No supplies are needed. What You Do: Stand in a circle with the children. Take one child and put him in the middle of the circle. Ask that child to close his eyes, hold his arm out, and point with his finger as you spin him around. When you stop spinning him, tell him to open his eyes and say the Bible verse to the person he is pointing to. After he says the verse, he will swap places with the person he was pointing to and you will do it all over again. Make sure each child gets a turn being in the middle. During the activity: SGL: Round and round you go. Where you ll stop, nobody knows. Spin, spin... STOP! CHILD #1: For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son. John 3:16. SGL: Round and round you go. Where you ll stop, nobody knows. Spin, spin... STOP! CHILD #2: For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son. John 3:16. At the end of the activity: Memorizing God s Word is one way that we can follow Jesus. We learned about another way today in our bible story. Our story was about a man named John who told people to change their ways and do what was right because the Lord was coming soon. John baptized people who decided they wanted to change and follow God. Jesus came to John and asked him to baptize Him. At first, John did not want to do this because Jesus was perfect and did not do wrong. Jesus then explained that being baptized was something God wanted Him to do. It was a way to show everyone that Jesus was obeying God and following God. So John took Jesus into the river and baptized Him.

Bugs in a Bag What You Need: Bugs and a bag What You Do: Place one six-color set of species bugs per player in a paper bag. Have the children take turns drawing out one bug from the bag. The first species each child chooses is the one he or his team must collect to win. If a child pulls a species from the bag that has already been chosen, he or she gets another turn. Children then take turns choosing a bug from the bag. If the bug matches his or his team s species, he or she gets to keep it. If it doesn t match, it is returned to the bag. The first child or team to collect all six colors of his or her species wins. We don t eat bugs, but, I love to play games with bugs. Do you want to play a game with me? Great, let s have some fun!!!

I will follow Jesus What You Need: Picture of Jesus, stamp pad and wipes. What You Do: Have the children color the picture of Jesus and use the stamp pad to make a foot print on the page using each child s hand. (See attached directions for a more detailed explanation of how to make a footprint with the child s hand.) Our story was about a man named John who told people to change their ways and do what was right because the Lord was coming soon.
