Thanksgiving for Baptism Sunday, September 30, 2018 Time after Pentecost Worship at 9:30 AM GATHERING Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen. In the waters of baptism, we were joined to Christ and we received the mercy and forgiveness of God. In baptism God claims us and makes us part of God s family. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us your children and servants of all. We thank you for the gift of water that sustains life, for our many lakes and rivers, for water to drink, for water to bathe, for water to play. Above all we thank you for the gift of new life in Jesus. Shower us with your Spirit, and give us a new beginning every day knowing that we are surrounded by your forgiveness, grace, and love. A reading from Genesis. Hear God s Word for God s People. Speak, Lord, for your servants are listening. God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you shall rest on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the air, on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and just as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. Only, you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. For your own lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning: from every animal I will require it and from human beings, each one for the blood of another, I will require a reckoning for human life. Whoever sheds the blood of a human, by a human shall that person s blood be shed; for in his own image God made humankind. And you, be fruitful and multiply, abound on the earth and multiply in it.
