DATING PROPHECIES According to the Life Application Bible the psalms were written between 1440 BC and 586 BC. Psalm 22 is accredited to King David. David was king of Israel between 1010 BC and 970 BC. It was during this time that he contributed to the Psalms. Several prophecies listed here are accredited to Isaiah whose ministry lasted from about 740 BC to 681 BC. The numbering of the psalms in the Latin Vulgate translation is usually one (1) number behind the Hebrew translation.

THE MASSIAH WILL BE BORN OF A VIRGIN Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel. Isiah 7; 14 700 BC (APR) COMMENTARY: Emmanuel: the name means with us is God. Since for the Christians the incarnation is the ultimate expression of God s willingness to be with us this text was interpreted to refer to the birth of Christ. p. 999 The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus And Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I have no relations with a man? (The angel answered) The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. Luke 1: 30-35 The Catholic Study bible

THE MESSIAH WILL BE BORN OF A VIRGIN Angel of the Lord appeared to (Joseph),, saying Joseph, son of David do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel. Matthew 1: 20-21

THE MESSIAH SHALL BE BORN IN BETHLEHEM IN THE LINE OF KING DAVID siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike upon the cheek the ruler of Israel. But you, O Bethlehem (formerly called Eph rathah) who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth from me one who is to be the ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days Micah 5: 2 742 BC (APR)

THE MESSIAH SHALL BE BORN IN BETHLEHEM IN THE LINE OF KING DAVID (CONT.) COMMENTARIES (When King Nebuchadnezzar conquered Judah) Micah was talking to King Zedekiah, who was the last king in the line of David. said that the next king in David s line would be the Messiah who would establish a kingdom that would never end The promised eternal king in David s line, who would come to live as a man, had been alive forever --- whose origin is from old, from ancient days. Although eternal he entered history as the man, Jesus of Nazareth» Life Application Bible» Pp. 1266-1267 Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary his betrothed who was with child. And while they were there she gave birth to her first born son. Luke 2: 4-7

THE MESSIAH SHALL BE BORN IN BETHLEHEM IN THE LINE OF KING DAVID (CONT.) an angel of the Lord appeared to (shepherds in the field and said to them) Be not afraid for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2: 8-11

THE MESSIAH WILL BE FROM THE HOUSE OF DAVID Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land Jeremiah 23: 5 627 BC (APR)

THE MESSIAH SHALL BE FROM THE HOUSE OF DAVID (CONT.) I have sworn to David my servant: I will establish your descendants for ever, and build your throne for all generations Psalms 89: 3-4 the angel Gabriel was sent from God to Nazareth to a virgin betrothed to Joseph, of the house of David... Who said you will conceive a son and you shall call his name Jesus God will give to him the throne of his father David of his kingdom there will be no end. Luke 1: 27-33

THE LORD WILL COME TO SAVE Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. Isaiah 35: 5-6 715 BC (APR) John (the Baptist asks) Are you he who is to come And Jesus answered the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. Matthew 11: 3-6

THE MESSIAH S ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9: 9 480 BC (APR) COMMENTARY: Your king a just savior, a figure of humble demeanor, but riding a donkey This marks a departure from the view of the royal figure as a conquering warrior. New testament authors apply this prophecy to Jesus s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. a great crowd heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him crying, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the king of Israel! And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written behold your king is coming, sitting on a donkey s colt. John 12: 12-15

THE BETRAYAL OF THE MESSIAH BY JUDAS Even my bosom friend in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted his heel against me. Psalm 41: 10 COMMENTARY: Even my bosom friend has lifted his heel against me John 13:18 cites this verse to characterize Judas a false friend p. 757 it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me. Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me. It is he to whom I shall give this morsel when I have dipped it. So when He had dipped the morsel he gave it to Judas John 13: 18-26

THE SUFFERING AND CRUCIFICTION OF THE MESSIAH They gave me gall for food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. Psalms 69: 21 they offered him wine (vinegar) to drink mingled with gall but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. Matthew 27: 34

THE SUFFERING AND THE CRUCIFICTION OF THE MESSIAH (CONT.) They have pierced my hands and my feet Psalms 22: 16 So they took Jesus to Golgotha There they crucified him John 19:17-18 Jesus himself stood among them (apostles) and said See my hands and my feet that it is I myself; handle me, and see, for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have. And when he had said this he showed them his hands and feet. Luke 24: 36-40

THE SUFFERING AND CRUCIFICTION OF THE MESSIAH (CONT.) The disciples said to (Thomas), We have seen the Lord. But (Thomas) said to them, Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails and place my finger in the mark of the nails and place my hand in his side, I will not believe Jesus came (and) said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side John 20: 25-27

THE SUFFERING AND THE CRUCIFICTION OF THE MESSIAH (CONT.) But I am a worm, and no man; scorned by men and despised by the people. All who see me mock at me; They make mouths at me, they wag their heads Psalm 22: 6-7 when they had crucified him (Jesus) those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads the chief priests, with the scribes and elders mocked him Matthew 27: 35-41

THE SUFFERING AND CRUCIFICTION OF THE MESSIAH (CONT.) they divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. Psalms 22: 19 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one for each soldier, also his tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom; so they said Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be. This was to fulfil the Scripture, They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.» John 19: 23-24

THE SUFFERING AND CRUCIFICTION OF THE MESSIAH (CONT.) He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. Psalms 34: 20 COMMENTARY: Not one of them is broken: John applies this text to Jesus on the cross as the righteous man par excellence. Hence this text is regarded as a prophecy about Christ when he was crucified it was the custom of the Romans to break the legs of a person they had crucified it was not carried out in this case and not one of Christ s bones was broken.» Psalms St. Joseph Edition» P. 93 to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken so they might be taken away so the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him, but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear and at once came out blood and water For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Not a bone of him shall be broken cont. John 19: 31-34

THE SUFFERING AND THE CRUCIFICTION OF THE MESSIAH And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication, so that, when they look on him whom they have pierced, they shall morn for him whom they have pierced Zechariah 12: 10 COMMENTARY: the victim is an enigmatic figure, perhaps referring to a Davidic descendant, a priestly leader or a prophet The gospel of John applies this text to the piercing of Christ s side after his death. p. 1315 And again another scripture says, They shall look on him whom they have pierced. John 19: 37

JESUS PREDICTS HIS OWN DEATH AND RESURRECTION He said to them, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written of the Son of man by the prophets will be accomplished. For He will be delivered to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon; they will scourge him and kill him, and on the third day he will rise. Luke 18 : 31-33 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week. (three days since the crucifixion and death of Jesus) Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb an angel of the Lord (had come) and rolled back the stone, and (was sitting) on it the angel said to the women, Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Matthew 28: 1-26
