July 23, 2017 MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR T here s a feast of grandparents in our Catholic liturgical calendar: the feast of Saint Anne and Saint Joachim, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Leo XIII, over 100 years ago, created this joint feast to be celebrated on July 26. Some ask how do we know the name of the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary their names are not in the bible. Pope Saint John Paul II in 1983 referred to an ancient tradition that preserved the names of Mary s parents. He said in their time and historical circumstance (Anne and Joachim) are a precious foundational stone in the fulfillment of the salvation of mankind. He also said: (Joachim and Anne) are a constant source of inspiration in everyday family and social life. They show us how to pass on to another, from one generation to the next, the entire spiritual legacy of the Christian life including prayer. Some people also ask do the saints like St Anne and Joachim actually hear us? If they can t hear our prayers, then it is useless for us to ask for their intercession!! The Catholic Answers web site says this about that question: XVI Sunday in Ordinary Time Indeed the saints in heaven are aware of our petitions and present them to God by interceding for us. Other people say that only Jesus Christ is the one mediator between God and humans and we don t need saints to pray for us. (1 Timothy 2.5). Jesus is indeed the unique mediator between God and humans because he is the only person who is both God and human. But St. Paul teaches us in 1 Timothy 2.1-4 that we should pray for all people, including our government leaders, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. St Paul says that praying for others is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the Truth. Praying therefore to Saint Joachim and Anne for our families is something good and pleasing to God, not something that takes away from Christ s role as mediator. Lord God, you gave Saint Joachim and Saint Anne the privilege of being the parents of Mary, the mother of your Incarnate Son. May their prayers help us to attain the salvation you promised to your people Scripture indicates that those in heaven are aware of the prayers of those on earth. This can be seen for example in the Book of Revelation 5.8 where John depicts the saints in heaven offering their prayers to God under the form of golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. If the saints in heaven are offering our prayers to God, then they must be aware of our prayers. 3
