Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES July 27 - August 2, 2013 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 61 MAHARAJAPURAM KRISHNAMURTHY Maharajapuram Krishnamurthy was the brother of the legendary Classical Carnatic musician Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer. Blessed with a melodious voice and good looks, he went on stage and joined the celebrated Kannaiah Drama Company even as a lad. During the early decades of the 20th century, Tamil theater was at its zenith and Kannaiah Company was perhaps the most famous of them all because of its its stage craft, incredible trick scenes and, what was then a novelty and an innovation, electric lighting. That was the period when the stage was usually lit only with a couple of gaslights popularly known as Petromax, which was a trade name. Kannaiah was the first play producer in south India to use electric lights with a generator and it was advertised as an attraction by itself. Indeed people came more to see the lights than the play! Kannaiah had only male performers in his troupe and no women were allowed to play roles. He made an exception only in the case of the famous stage and movie star, T. P. Rajalakshmi. The top star of the troupe was the immortal legend of Tamil theater, S. G. Kittappa, who became a star with a fan following even outside India in countries like Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Malaya (now Singapore and Malaysia) and Burma (now Myanmar). When he left the troupe, M. R. Krishnamurthy and another stage star, C. V. V. Panthulu took over with Krishnamurthy being more successful than Panthulu. Krishnamurthy shot into prominence as a movie star in 1934 with the release of a major box-office hit Bhama Vijayam, the familiar mythological tale of Lord Krishna and his two wives Rukmini and Sathyabhama. It was produced by a successful Coimbatore-based company, Chellam Talkies, at a cost of less than one lakh rupees, but grossed a stunningly incredible ten lakhs! Bhama Vijayam was directed by the Hollywood-trained filmmaker Manik Lal Tandon and it had M. R. Krishnamurthy as Lord Krishna and the famous Palayamkottah Sisters (also known as Bai Sisters) P. S. Ratna Bai and P. S. Saraswathi Bai, as Rukmini and Sathyabhama respectively. The two sisters were noted stage stars and their patron, rich entrepreneur and textile mill magnate interested in arts, P. S. Sathappa Chettiar brought them into movies and promoted a film company and studio in Madras. When cinema began to talk Tamil in 1931, producers made a beeline to the theater and took up popular dramas for filming in asis-where-is condition. Classical Carnatic musicians were brought in to play the lead roles. One such trained musician already famous on stage was Maharajapuram Krishnamurthy. Bhama Vijayam was already a successful stage play when it was taken up for filming with the same trio Krishnamurthy - Ratna Bai - Saraswathi Bai repeating their stage roles. To play the role of Sage Narada, a new face, the fast-up-and coming Carnatic musician, soon to be a legend in his lifetime and an immortal icon of music, G. N. Balasubramaniam (GNB) was cast. Like most Tamil movies of that period, this film was also a musical extravaganza. It had as many as fifty-nine songs! As GNB was better known and more talented and skilled than Krishnamurthy, he had the edge over the latter. GNB sang more songs than Krishnamurthy did in this movie. Krishnamurthy sang in ragas Suratmalhar, Maund, Abheri, Kambhoji, Hindustan Sarang, Hindustan Bhageshri and Hindustan Yaman. He also sang the song made famous by S. G. Kittappa on stage Kaami Sathyabhama kadhavai thiravaai in raga Khamas. The practice of bringing out gramophone records of film songs had not yet begun in 1934 and there are no records of songs of this film. No print of the film has survived either. Very sad indeed& One of the interesting features of this film - call it anachronism or what you will! Lord Krishna and Narada sang a duet - Saint Thyagarajas composition in raga Thodi Kotinadhulu Dhanushkodilo undagaa&. And there is more to come! The last song was a chorus sung by the devotees of Krishna and it is now the Indian National Anthem! Yes, Jana Gana Mana&. This song was introduced to promote the Indian Freedom Movement which was then taking the nation by storm under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi! (To be continued) Toppled BSNL junction box supported by compound wall A BSNL junction box on Thyagaraya Road (near Pondy Bazaar, T. Nagar) which has come off its base is resting against the adjacent compound wall. The box is covered with posters. Air pollution level above permissible norm The level of Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) at the traffic intersection on Usman Road (near Pothys) during the 24-hour period ending at 6 a.m on July 25 was 123 micrograms/cubic meter. Chathurmasya Vratham by Vishwaprasanna Thirtha Swamiji Vishwaprasanna Thirtha Swamiji (junior pontiff of Pejawara Adhokshaja Mutt), is observing Chathurmasya Vratham in Raghavendraswami temple (Raghaviah Road, T. Nagar). He started the vrath on July 22 and will conclude it on September 10. Devotees are invited to the Mutt and have dharshan of Swamiji and get his blessings. He is willing to give spiritual lectures in the evening hours in nearby residences as many may not be in a position to visit the Mutt daily. He heads the Prahalada Gurukul in Udipi. He also runs the 27-acre Neelavara Goshala (18 kms from Sei Krishna Temple, Udupi) which houses more than 1000 cows including abandoned and old ones which otherwise would have gone to slaughterhouses. The goshala also houses a separate building with facilities to perform last rites, obeisance, homams and gho-sevas. Erection of an old age home, a school for the handicapped and a residential school are some of his ongoing projects. For more details please contact S. Chakrapani in 91766 10406. Select petrol outlets to sell 5 kg cooking gas cylinders The Central Government on July 23 has approved a free trade LPG scheme for selling 5 kg cooking gas cylinders at commercial rate through company owned retail outlets (COCO) of State-run oil companies. According to an oil company executive, this scheme will benefit consumers in big cities who are mobile and do not need a permanent LPG connection. Such consumers need flexibility for getting the LPG cylinders as per their convenience and their needs can also be fulfilled by smaller quantities of LPG. The cost of the 5-kg cylinder will be Rs. 361. The price at present of a subsidized domestic cylinder which weighs 14.2 kg is Rs. 398 in Chennai. CMYK

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Replaced EB transformer yet to be removed Sir, We are residents of K. G. Sunshine Apartment, 12 th Avenue, Ashok Nagar. Three months back, EB workers replaced the faulty transformer located within our compound and left behind the defective transformer with a promise to remove it in a couple of days. However till date it has not been removed in spite of our repeated reminders and letters to the officials. Since the transformer is lying near the main gate, we are finding it difficult to take out our cars. We appeal to TNEB officials to make arrangements to remove the transformer without further delay. Residents Association of K.G. Sunshine Apartment, 12 th Avenue, Ashok Nagar Ranganathan Street bylane can benefit pedestrians Sir, With a view to help pedestrians, who literally get squeezed up while moving along the ever-busy Ranganathan Street (T Nagar), Chennai Corporation can reserve the bylane between Ranganathan Street and Natesan Street exclusively for pedestrians. The lane is in a bad condition and misused as a urinal by Ranganathan Street shopkeepers and its employees. Persons who wish to reach Mambalam Station can use this lane instead of going via Ranganathan Street. I appeal to the Corporation to clean up this lane and put it to exclusively use of pedestrians. V. S. Jayaraman, 31 Motilal Street, T. Nagar Encroachments hinder traffic on Usman Road service lanes Sir, The service lanes of Usman Road, T. Nagar, have been encroached upon by hawkers. This inhibits traffic flow and causes inconvenience to pedestrians. Adding to the woes, auto drivers have converted the lanes into temporary auto stands to look for potential customers. It is high time Chennai Corporation and traffic officials took action to rid encroachments from the service lanes of Usman Road and also the bylanes of nearby streets. V. Sethuraman, 23, P.S. Choultry opposite Central Railway Station spared from demolition In reply to the petitions filed against the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), its officials have assured Madras High Court that it will not demolish Ramaswami Mudaliar Choultry, a 100-year-old heritage building opposite Central Railway Station, Poonamallee High Road, for the Metro Rail project. But other commercial structures on the plot, except a hotel, will have to make way for the project. The choultry (lodging house) came into existence after the government allotted land in August 1888 to Ramaswami Mudaliar with a condition that it accommodate train passengers free of cost. The government also made it clear that it could take back the 1.33-acre land without paying any compensation if it is used for any other purpose. Now the land bears several commercial establishments, including a hotel. In 2010, the government realized that the land was required for the Metro Rail project and also that a large portion of the property was being used by commercial establishments on lease or sub-lease, in violation of the original grant condition. It sought to take over the choultry and other properties through the Administrator General and Official Trustee (AG & OT), and a batch of petitions were filed against the takeover attempt. Rao Bahadur Raja Sir Savalai Ramaswami Mudaliar, a dubash during the British regime, constructed the building Book on old age released by Dr. V.S.
