True Happiness Part 2 LUKE 6:20-26

Following Jesus requires new priorities to take root in our lives.

LUKE 6:20-23 20 Then looking up at his disciples, he said: Blessed are you who are poor, because the kingdom of God is yours.

LUKE 6:20-23 21 Blessed are you who are now hungry, because you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, because you will laugh.

LUKE 6:20-23 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you, insult you, and slander your name as evil because of the Son of Man.

LUKE 6:20-23 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy. Take note-your reward is great in heaven, for this is the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets.

Priority: The right to take precedence or to proceed before others. The fact or condition of being regarded or treated as more important.

Anatomy of Priority: Priorities

Anatomy of Priority: Priorities Values

Anatomy of Priority: Priorities Values Beliefs

4 Observations: 1. Christians agree with Jesus that there is no life in the world.

LUKE 6:24-26 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your comfort.

LUKE 6:24-26 25 Woe to you who are now full, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are now laughing, for you will mourn and weep.

LUKE 6:24-26 26 Woe to you when all people speak well of you, for this is the way their ancestors used to treat the false prophets.

Money and Comfort + Fullness and Pleasure + Laughter and Winning + Acceptance and Approval = True Happiness

Improved Mood: You are going to be in a great mood all day, because you are going to be slapping your troubles away. Life is hard as it is, you don t need to cry anymore.

More Salad: One slap, SALAD! Change your eating habits: soup, coleslaw, in 4 or 5 seconds its done

More exciting life: This tuna, boring. Stop having a boring tuna stop having a boring life. You are going to have an exciting life now.

Physical health: we are going to make America skinny again.

4 Observations: 2. Christians believe Jesus is the only source of life and happiness.

4 Observations: 3. Christians put Christ and His Kingdom first.

MATTHEW 6:25-34 25 Therefore I tell you: Don't worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing?

MATTHEW 6:25-34 26 Consider the birds of the sky: They don't sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth more than they?

MATTHEW 6:25-34 27 Can any of you add one moment to his life-span by worrying?

MATTHEW 6:25-34 28 And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don't labor or spin thread.

MATTHEW 6:25-34 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these.

MATTHEW 6:25-34 30 If that's how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won't he do much more for you-you of little faith?

MATTHEW 6:25-34 31 So don't worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?'

MATTHEW 6:25-34 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

MATTHEW 6:25-34 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.

MATTHEW 6:25-34 34 Therefore don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

4 Observations: 4. We prioritize obedience to His Word over money, comfort, success, food, clothing, acceptance, and even over our own lives.

LUKE 14:26-27 26 If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, and even his own life-he cannot be my disciple.

LUKE 14:26-27 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

Need to know: 1. Following Jesus threatens your money and possessions.

LUKE 6:20 20 Then looking up at his disciples, he said: Blessed are you who are poor, because the kingdom of God is yours.

How does Jesus threaten your money and possessions?

HOW: a. Jesus requires us to become spiritual poor.

HOW: a. Jesus requires us to become spiritual poor. b. Jesus requires us to be willing to become physically poor.

MATTHEW 6:19-20 19 Don't store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.

MATTHEW 6:19-20 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don't break in and steal.

HOW: a. Jesus requires us to become spiritual poor. b. Jesus requires us to be willing to become physically poor. c. Jesus requires us to give generously. d. Jesus limits how you can make money.

HEBREWS 10:32-34 32 Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.

HEBREWS 10:32-34 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way.

HEBREWS 10:32-34 34 For you sympathized with the prisoners and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, because you know that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession.

Need to know: 2. Following Jesus will threaten your reputation and relationships.

LUKE 6:22-23 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you, insult you, and slander your name as evil because of the Son of Man.

LUKE 6:22-23 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy. Take note-your reward is great in heaven, for this is the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets.

How will Following Jesus threaten your reputation and relationships?

Agree with the world, and the world will likely accept you.

Be silent about the gospel, and the world will likely accept you.

Communicate the truth in love, and the world will likely hate you.

ACTS 5:25-42 25 Someone came and reported to them, "Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple and teaching the people."

ACTS 5:25-42 26 Then the commander went with the servants and brought them in without force, because they were afraid the people might stone them.

ACTS 5:25-42 27 After they brought them in, they had them stand before the Sanhedrin, and the high priest asked,

ACTS 5:25-42 28 "Didn't we strictly order you not to teach in this name? Look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man's blood."

ACTS 5:25-42 29 Peter and the apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than people.

ACTS 5:25-42 30 The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had murdered by hanging him on a tree.

ACTS 5:25-42 31 God exalted this man to his right hand as ruler and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

ACTS 5:25-42 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him."

ACTS 5:25-42 33 When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.

ACTS 5:25-42 40 After they called in the apostles and had them flogged, they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them.

ACTS 5:25-42 41 Then they went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to be treated shamefully on behalf of the Name.

ACTS 5:25-42 42 Every day in the temple, and in various homes, they continued teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

Hebrews 12:1-3 1Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us,

Hebrews 12:1-3 2 keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:1-3 3 For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you won't grow weary and give up.
