Many people around here speak in Dogri, which is the local language. Jammu is situated on the Tawi River and is the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir is located on the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus that flows through Ladakh very near Leh, one of the highest cities in the world. PAGE:5

Many people in Kashmir are farmers and they keep animals like sheep, goats etc. In Ladakh people keep yaks. The famous Pangong Lake is located in Ladakh. Thousands of tourists visit this lake for its beauty. People here are mainly Buddhists and they celebrate Buddhist festivals. There are many monasteries here. A monastery is a house or place of residence occupied by a community of persons, especially monks. Kashmir has many orchards of fruits like cherries, apples, almonds and walnuts. The famous Dal Lake is located here, where one can enjoy a ride in the Shikara (a light and flat bottomed boat) and stay in the House Boats. (A boat designed or modified to be used primarily as a home) The famous Shalimar gardens built by the Mughals are a beautiful sight. Pahalgam is favourite tourist spot in Kashmir. Another lovely place is Gulmarg with rolling, green grassy meadows. In winter tourists visit it for skiing. PAGE:6
