FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Dear Friends in Christ, The first pastor I remember was Fr. Bill Treacy. We went to St. Patrick s in Seattle. I have this recollection of tugging on his cassock after Mass and of him shaking my hand. When we moved to Olympia, he followed us the very same year and became pastor of St. Michael s there. Fr. Treacy is now the oldest priest in the Archdiocese. He is 99 and will be 100 years old in the Spring. This coming year he will also celebrate the 75 th Anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. He was a beloved pastor and throughout his priesthood he was an active promoter of ecumenism and interreligious dialogue. What is more, he still helps out in parishes occasionally and still lives on his own. Fr. Treacy is one of the many good priests and women religious who need our support in their retirement. The Called to Serve as Christ campaign will provide funds to secure the future of these and many priests and women religious who will need a secure retirement in the future. It is one way we can say thank you for their many years of faithful service. In the next few weeks you will be receiving a letter from Archbishop Sartain explaining the campaign and asking you to make a three year pledge to support our priests and women religious in their retirement. I would ask that you take some time to pray over what you are being called to give to support this worthy effort. Make a pledge that feels right to you and that you feel good about. Every gift makes a tremendous difference. Over the years I have been so impressed by your generosity and love of the Lord. I know that with your help we can make our goal of just over $1.3 million dollars from St. Jude. Archbishop Sartain asked the priests to be the first to give to the campaign. I am happy to report that the priests themselves have already pledged over $1.3 million to the campaign. Working together throughout the Archdiocese, I believe we can continue the good work of spreading the Gospel and providing for our future ministers of the Gospel. Thank you so much for your support and all you do to build up our parish. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Johnson Children s Choir will be starting this week. Our new Children s Choir Director, Priscilla Pizzichemi, will be holding Children s Choir practice starting this Tuesday from 5:30pm - 6:20pm in the Sanctuary. This allows children to come after the 4:30 Faith Formation classes and before the 6:30 class. All children ages 7-18 are welcome to join and participate! Please encourage your children to participate and please welcome Priscilla! -2-

SOCIAL JUSTICE SERVANT OF LOVE In the gospel we see the humanness of the disciples who are discussing among themselves who is the greatest. In response to their conversation Jesus puts his arms around a little child. Perhaps this was to show the disciples that they were not chosen for their importance or potential, but because they were loved. Their mission was not to perform might works, but to receive the little ones, the needy, the forgotten and the rejected. Their mission was to share the love they had been given so freely. They were called to the humbling service of embracing the little people just as Jesus did. When Jesus picked up the child, he was performing a living parable, teaching that loving someone is the greatest service you can do for them. Loving is also the greatest service we can do for the entire world because the more people are loved, the less they need to compete and use violence to make their mark. Jesus faith in the mission God gave him was what made him so different from the rest. Jesus knew in his bones that love is more powerful than violence. NICKEL AND DIMED On (Not) Getting By In America The Social Justice Committee invites you to read the book Nickel and Dimed and to join them for a discussion on Monday, October 22nd at 7:00 p.m. This book is a first hand account of life in low-wage America. The story of Barbara Ehrenreich s attempts to eke out a living while working as a waitress, hotel maid, house cleaner, nursing home aide, and Wal-Mart associate. When people were hungry, Jesus didn t say, Now is that political, or social? He said, I feed you. Because the good news to a hungry person is bread. Desmond Tutu -4- MAY THE BLESSING OF MERCY May the blessing of mercy carry us through each day. May mercy be tattooed on our hearts and minds to speak the truth in love as we go about the ministry of our life. May mercy be sown deeply in our souls, core to our identity, who we are in mercy. May mercy invite mercy to be the prophetic voice in this moment of time. May mercy be seeded in our hearts sown and cultivated by the work of our lives. May we know we are the body of Christ one mercy open to respond to the needs of our time. May God use our hands to feed the hungry, to build community, our eyes to see the needs of others, our ears to hear the cries that are carried in the wind across oceans and desert lands and in our cities, our mouths to speak tenderness and love, to be mercy here and now. May we bless the other in mercy over and over and over again. Amen. Around the Archdiocese Why are we making changes to the priest pension plan funding model? Over the years the Archdiocese has taken many steps to improve the funded status of the priest pension plans: Increased the amount from the Annual Catholic Appeal to the plans to $1.6 million per year Increased billings to the parish contribution of the plan $600 per year since 2008 Raised the benefit eligibility age from 65 to 70 Full benefit vesting age increased from 25 to 30 years, depending on date of birth Eliminated three percent extended service benefit Despite these efforts, it was not enough to provide a sustainable path for the future. Based on independent actuarial studies, we know if we continue the pay-as-you-go approach, amounts billed to our parishes will continue to increase for the foreseeable future. A much better approach is to properly fund the plans with adequate capital so present and future generations of priests will have a secure retirement plan and the burden on our parishes will be reduced. Your charitable gift will help the Archdiocese to build a future which answers Christ s call to serve for future generations. Rachel s Corner. Hope and Healing After Abortion It is exactly what I needed, even though I didn t know it. I experienced God s loving touch and grace on weekend of healing. We pray for Church leaders, that they may regain the trust that has been broken, by putting the needs of the vulnerable first, by acting with transparency, and by always holding themselves accountable to God and to the People of God. We pray for ourselves, that the darkness and confusion we feel may give way to light. Soothe our hearts and renew our trust. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us, And show us the way to justice, healing, and hope. Amen
