1615 N. 18th St. Bismarck, ND 58501 701-255-1039 www.oursaviourwels.org Pastor Thomas M. Moldenhauer pastor.moldenhauer@gmail.com 920-285-2881 WEOME God welcomes you no matter who you are and so do we. Thank you for joining us in God s house today. Whether you are a first-time guest, a friend or relative of a member, or a curious observer from a different religious background, we are delighted to be with you in worship. A NOTE ABOUT WORSHIP We believe that Jesus is the Savior of all. By his life, death, and resurrection Jesus saves all sinners simply because he loves us. That is called the gospel, and it s the good news on every page of God s Word. Therefore, the Bible is not just information about God or rules from God, but the saving power God uses to create and strengthen faith in our hearts and restore our lives. utheran worship places this good news at the center of the worship service with an order called liturgy. In both the Word and sacraments (Means of Grace), in specifically selected Scripture readings, and in carefully crafted and often ancient songs, prayers, and creeds, the liturgy proclaims the good news of Jesus from start to finish. utheran worship is also designed to include the participation of the entire assembly (including children). For your ease and convenience, the order of service is printed out entirely. If a song is not found in this service folder, it can be found in the red hymnal located in front of you. Parts marked are spoken or sung by the worship leader, and the parts marked and printed in bold are spoken or sung by the congregation. FOR YOUR ONVENIENE Quiet Bags are for any parents with small children. They are on a stand in the back of church. Weekly News & Notes are printed in the back of this worship folder. Restrooms are to the left as you walk out the back of church or in the basement. Website: oursaviourwels.org OUR HURH BODY Our Saviour s proclaims the truth about Jesus throughout the world as a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical utheran Synod (wels.net). We are united in faith and teaching with the other churches of the Wisconsin Synod, as well as the churches of the Evangelical utheran Synod (ES). 2

THE FESTIVA OF THE HOY TRINITY Today the hristian hurch begins the second half of the hurch Year to take time to celebrate that we believe in a triune God. Triune is not a word found in Scripture, but it is a word used to describe a Biblical teaching. It comes from the atin Tri (three) and unus (one). Our God is three persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit but only one holy God. That does not agree with human knowledge. It can only be trusted through faith in the God who loves us, saves us, and has given us the truth. WORSHIP SERIES May 27 June 3 June 10 June 17 June 24 July 1 July 8 July 15 July 22 Three is better than one Rest is better than work Family is better than foes Seed is better than sight Faith is better than fear ife is better than death Persecution is better than pain-free Sending is better than staying Quiet is better than noise During this time of year trees, plants, and fields are growing lush and green. The same is true for God s hurch as we enter the season of Pentecost. This is a time where the Holy Spirit uses the teachings of Jesus to promote and produce growth. We grow as Jesus teaches us what is better for our relationship with him and in our hristian lives of service. Today we ponder the mystery of the Trinity. All three persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit play a vital role in our salvation. The same God who from eternity has enjoyed a perfect relationship within himself also has done all that is required for us to have a perfect relationship with him. SERVING IN WORSHIP Presiding & Preaching Organist Ushers Pastor Tom Moldenhauer Jim Fors Dick Gimbel - Elder, Elroy Haadem, Jeff Jensen, Joel Moos, Jakob Weippert PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God and Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, filling and renewing all creation by your eternal Spirit, and manifesting your saving grace through our ord Jesus hrist: in mercy cleanse our hearts and lips that, free from doubt and fear, we may ever worship you, one true immortal God, with your Son and the Holy Spirit. 3

MORNING PRAISE This worship order is based on the historic service from monastic communities long ago, where monks and clergy would gather for this abridged service that began each day. PASTOR S WEOME After the welcome, we will view this month s WES onnection for a brief update on an aspect of ministry we do together as a part of our international church body. OPENING HYMN Alleluia! et Praises Ring 241 v 1-3 Please stand. A TO WORSHIP Psalm 51:15 Psalm 70:1 O ord, open my lips. And my mouth shall declare your praise. Hasten to save me, O God. O ord, come quickly to help me. Praise be to God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. ome, let us worship him. HYMN Alleluia! et Praises Ring 241 v 4 Alleluia! et praises ring! Unto our triune God we sing; Blest be his name forever! With angel hosts let us adore And sing his praises more and more For all his grace and favor. Singing, Ringing: Holy, holy, God is holy. Spread the story Of our God the ord of glory! 4

THE WORD PRAYER OF THE DAY et us pray. Pastor says the prayer printed on page 3, after which the congregation responds: Amen. Please be seated. HIDREN S MESSAGE hildren are invited up front for a brief devotion with Pastor. FIRST READING Isaiah 6:1-8 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the ord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: Holy, holy, holy is the ord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory. 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 Woe to me! I cried. I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the ord Almighty. 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for. 8 Then I heard the voice of the ord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, Here am I. Send me! The Word of the ord. Thanks be to God. As in the case for the Prophet Isaiah, the Triune God makes his people ready and able to serve him. 5

Psalms have been used in worship by God s people since he inspired them to be written in the Old Testament. The Spirit testifies that we are children of the Father and heirs together with the Son. PSAM OF THE DAY Psalm 150 pg. 122 SEOND READING Romans 8:14-17 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs heirs of God and co-heirs with hrist, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. The Word of the ord. Thanks be to God. This hymn was written for Trinity Sunday by Reginald Heber, the vicar of Hodnet in England in the early 19 th century. The Triune God has accomplished our salvation from atonement to faith. HYMN OF THE DAY Holy, Holy, Holy, ord God Almighty 195 Please stand. SERMON John 3:1-17 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him. 3 Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. 4 How can someone be born when they are old? Nicodemus asked. Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother s womb to be born! 5 Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, You must be born again. 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. 9 How can this be? Nicodemus asked. 6

10 You are Israel s teacher, said Jesus, and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. The Gospel of the ord. Thanks be to God. Why do you believe what you believe? Please stand. ATHANASIAN REED (selected portions) This creed is named after St. Athanasius, a staunch defender of the hristian faith in the fourth century. It was prepared to assist the hurch in combating two errors that undermined Bible teaching. One error denied that God s Son and the Holy Spirit are of one being or Godhead with the Father. The other error denied that Jesus hrist is true God and true man in one person. The section of the Athanasian reed included here is the portion that confesses the Bible s teaching about the Triune God. The entire text may be found on pages 132-133 in hristian Worship. Whoever wishes to be saved must, above all else, hold to the true hristian faith. Whoever does not keep this faith pure in all points will certainly perish forever. All Now this is the true hristian faith: We worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, without mixing the persons or dividing the divine being. For each person the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is distinct, but the deity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory and coeternal in majesty. 7

Men What the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Holy Spirit. The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; the Father is infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; the Father is eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal; yet they are not three who are eternal, but there is one who is eternal, just as they are not three who are uncreated, nor three who are infinite, but there is one who is uncreated and one who is infinite. Women In the same way the Father is almighty, the Son is almighty, the Holy Spirit is almighty; yet they are not three who are almighty, but there is one who is almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So the Father is ord, the Son is ord, the Holy Spirit is ord; yet they are not three ords, but one ord. All For just as hristian truth compels us to confess each person individually to be God and ord, so the true hristian faith forbids us to speak of three Gods or three ords. The Father is neither made nor created nor begotten of anyone. The Son is neither made nor created, but is begotten of the Father alone. The Holy Spirit is neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeds from the Father and the Son. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And within this Trinity none comes before or after; none is greater or inferior, but all three persons are coequal and coeternal, so that in every way, as stated before, all three persons are to be worshiped as one God and one God worshiped as three persons. Whoever wishes to be saved must have this conviction of the Trinity. Please be seated. THANK OFFERING 1 orinthians 16:2; 2 orinthians 9:6-8 The members of Our Saviour s utheran join together to do the ord s work in Bismarck and throughout the world in our church body, the WES. Guests need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. Please help us be a friendly church by taking a moment to fill out the Friendship Register located at the end of the pew. 8

Please stand. ORD, HAVE MERY Kyrie Eleison In the morning, O ord, I call to you; be merciful to me and hear my prayer. ord, have mercy. ord Jesus, our perfect amb, we give you thanks for the sacrifice you made to pay for our sins. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Please be seated. OSING HYMN God, We Praise You 277 Please stand. 9

PRAYER FOR GRAE O ord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to this new day. Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into sin nor run into any kind of danger; and in all we do, direct us to what is right in your sight, through Jesus hrist, your Son, our ord.
