Sunday, May 27, 2018 Holy Trinity Worship at 9:30 AM GATHERING Hymn Sing Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen. Trusting God s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God forgives you all your sins. Amen. 1

Gathering Song Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty! Hymnal #413 1 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! 2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert and art, and evermore shalt be. 3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in pow'r, in love and purity. 4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Text: Reginald Heber, 1783-1826, alt. Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day Let us pray God of heaven and earth, before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time you are the triune God: Author of creation, eternal Word of salvation, life-giving Spirit of wisdom. Guide us to all truth by your Spirit, that we may proclaim all that Christ has revealed and rejoice with you in endless joy and love. Glory and praise to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. 2

WORD Scripture Reading Romans 8:12-17 Bible, pg. 919 In describing the new life of faith, Paul refers to all three persons of the Trinity: the Spirit leads us to recognize that we are children of God the Father and sisters and brothers with Christ the Son. 12 Brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Father! 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God Children s Message Please stand, as you are able Gospel Acclamation Halle, Halle, Hallelujah Hymnal #172 3

Holy Gospel Matthew 28:16-20 Bible, pg. The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 28 th chapter: Glory to you, O Lord 16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." The Gospel of our Lord: Praise to you, O Christ Please be seated Message The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song Hymn of the Day Come, Join the Dance of Trinity Hymnal #412 1 Come, join the dance of Trinity, before all worlds begun the interweaving of the Three, the Father, Spirit, Son. The universe of space and time did not arise by chance, but as the Three, in love and hope, made room within their dance. 2 Come, see the face of Trinity, newborn in Bethlehem; then bloodied by a crown of thorns outside Jerusalem. The dance of Trinity is meant for human flesh and bone; when fear confines the dance in death, God rolls away the stone. 4

3 Come, speak aloud of Trinity, as wind and tongues of flame set people free at Pentecost to tell the Savior's name. We know the yoke of sin and death, our necks have worn it smooth; go tell the world of weight and woe that we are free to move! 4 Within the dance of Trinity, before all worlds begun, we sing the praises of the Three, the Father, Spirit, Son. Let voices rise and interweave, by love and hope set free, to shape in song this joy, this life: the dance of Trinity. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. 5

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers Hymnal #178 At the end of each petition, the assembly sings: Reproduced with permission OneLicense.Net A-704219 Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always And also with you Please share the peace of our Risen Christ with your neighbors Offering MEAL 6

Offertory Create in Me Hymnal #185 Reprinted with permission OneLicense.Net A-704219 Offering Prayer Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 8

Words of Institution In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread. Lamb of God Hymnal pg. 174 9

Hymn Come, Thou Almighty King Hymnal #408 1 Come, thou almighty King, help us thy name to sing; help us to praise; Father all-glorious, o'er all victorious, come and reign over us, Ancient of Days. 2 Come, thou incarnate Word, merciful, mighty Lord; our prayer attend. Come and thy people bless, and give thy word success, and let thy righteousness on us descend. 3 Come, holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear in this glad hour! Thou who almighty art, rule now in ev'ry heart, never from us depart, Spirit of pow'r. 4 To thee, great One in Three, eternal praises be hence evermore! Thy sov'reign majesty may we in glory see, and to eternity love and adore. Text: source unknown, c. 1757, alt. Hymn Father Most Holy Hymnal #415 1 Father most holy, merciful, and tender; Jesus, our Savior, with the Father reigning; Spirit of comfort, advocate, defender, light never waning. 2 Trinity blessed, unity unshaken; 10

goodness unbounded, very God of heaven, light of the angels, joy of those forsaken, hope of all living. 3 Maker of all things, all thy creatures praise thee; all for thy worship were and are created; now, as we also worship thee devoutly, hear thou our voices. 4 Lord God Almighty, unto thee be glory, one in three persons, over all exalted! Glory we offer, praise thee and adore thee, now and forever. Text: Latin hymn, 10th cent.; tr. Percy Dearmer, 1867-1936, alt. Outside USA: Text from The English Hymnal Oxford University Press 1906. All on earth your scepter claim, all in heav'n above adore you. Infinite your vast domain, everlasting is your reign. 2 Hark! The glad celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising, fill the heav'ns with sweet accord: "Holy, holy, holy Lord!" 3 Lo, the apostolic train join your sacred name to hallow; prophets swell the glad refrain, and the white-robed martyrs follow; and from morn to set of sun through the church the song goes on. 4 Holy Father, holy Son, Holy Spirit, three we name you, 11

though in essence only one; undivided God we claim you and, adoring, bend the knee while we own the mystery. Text: source unknown; tr. Clarence A. Walworth, 1820-1900 Table Blessing The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in God s grace. Prayer after Communion Jesus Christ, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. Amen. Announcements Benediction SENDING May God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, grant you the gifts of faith and hope. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen. Sending Song This is My Song Hymnal #887 1 This is my song, O God of all the nations, a song of peace for lands afar and mine. This is my home, the country where my heart is; here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine; but other hearts in other lands are beating 12

with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine. 2 My country's skies are bluer than the ocean, and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine. But other lands have sunlight too, and clover, and skies are ev'rywhere as blue as mine. So hear my song, O God of all the nations, a song of peace for their land and for mine. 3 This is my prayer, O God of all earth's kingdoms, your kingdom come; on earth your will be done. O God, be lifted up till all shall serve you, and hearts united learn to live as one. So hear my prayer, O God of all the nations; myself I give you; let your will be done.
