THE SPIRE News of New Haven United Methodist Church Making Disciples for Jesus Christ in the world, by being God s Love in Action 5603 S. New Haven Avenue, Tulsa, OK. 74135 918-743-6491 VOLUME XXVI Number 12 March 25, 2016 Did you notice a new tree in the front church yard? Look in the area close to our church sign you ll see a beautiful addition to our church grounds! Thank you, Trustee s Committee, for this visual expression of New Haven UMC being a part of the new Council Oak District! Not only does this oak tree commemorate our new district, but it also reflects important events in Tulsa history: The Council Oak District of the United Methodist Church, was charted May 3, 2015. It is named after the Creek Council tree, a mature post oak, that marks the traditional ceremonial ground chosen in 1836 by the Lochapoka clan of the Creek Indians. March 20th Palm Sunday Services 8:45 am & 11:00 am Blessing of the Crosses of Love Special Music with Instrumentalists 9:45 am Easter Egg Hunt In 1834, they had begun their involuntary migration from Alabama under the control of the U.S. government. It was a slow and painful trek, and of the original group of 630, 161 died in route. In 1836 they arrived on a low hill overlooking the Arkansas river and here they marked their arrival with a solemn ceremony depositing ashes brought over the trail from their last fires in Alabama. The Tulsa-Lochapoka, a division of the Creek nation, established their town. The park is often referred to as Tulsa s first City Hall. As late as 1896 the Tulsa- Lochapoka gathered here for ceremonies, feast and games. Today, commemorative tribal ceremonies are held each March 24th Maundy Thursday Drama 6:30 pm The Table is Ready Sacrament of Holy Communion March 25th Good Friday Service 6:30 pm Placing of the Cross year. ADOPT A CHICK In response to our recent In-Service Sunday, Debbie at Cookson Hills Ministry writes: Thank YOU GUYS so much. What you (Jone Friesen) Sharon Sparks, her husband (Rob) and the church have done for us still blown us away. We still have two weeks left in the sign up for the chick's and at this point we are at 1200 baby chicks. We will be hearing a lot of Chirp Chirps before it's said and done! I will send you pictures as we go through the day with the chicks. Once again what a privilege it was for me to meet you guys. I'm sorry I didn't get to spend much time with you yesterday, but you did get to see a active day at Cookson. Check out Cookson Hills Facebook page. I put some pictures of you guys and what your church has done for us. God bless you all so much. Sharon Sparks and Jone Friesen at Cookson Hills Paula s Perspectives... Our children did a fabulous job during the Palm Sunday processional! Many thanks to our children who participated in practice during the previous weeks; your practice helped make the event very meaningful. Thanks too for sharing your love as we made Crosses of Love last week during Sunday school. The blessing of the crosses helped the children understand the importance of the work they put into assembling the crosses. I know the children enjoyed being a big part of the church services today. Celebration Singers Choir is going strong. Miss Lindsay is leading the children in singing some lively and action packed songs. We will be singing during services soon and I feel you won t want to miss it! We are so blessed to have Hannah and Jocelyn co-lead our choir. The children like having the youth assistants and I think the youth have a great time as they think back to when they were singing during their elementary school years. Footprints Liturgical Dance Troupe continues to practice. Miss Deena would like to invite more friends to join this group. This program is offered to kids 3 rd grade through high school. Our front lawn was filled with excitement as the children participated in our Easter Egg Hunt. After the hunt we went to our Sunday school class to hear the Easter story, lead by Miss Tonya Miss Kelly, using Resurrection Eggs. After we played Easter Bingo! Next week we will create a variety of Easter crafts to help the children remember the true meaning of Easter. We ll even have a mini service project as the children will make Easter greeting cards for our church grandparents! W. E. B. We re Experiencing the Bible is a big hit with the children. We read the story of Adam and Eve and talked about making good choices. It is very evident our kids are grounded in the Word and they are willing to share their thoughts with our group during discussion time. We used the remainder of our time together making books for some very special people in our Church! Sharing the joy, Miss Paula

Mission Corner Dear Missy, I saw a sign-up sheet for Mission t-shirts on Sunday. How do I go about getting the right size? What s the cost? When do I wear it? When is it available? So much I want to know! Dear Fan, Signed, T-shirt Fan Here is what the Mission t-shirt will look like it incorporates our All In logo and our Mission Statement on the back as well as, a listing of the various missions that New Haven UMC supports with giving and events. Now to answer your questions: There are various t-shirts on a rack in the hallway that you can try on to determine your correct size. There are adult, youth and children sizes. Once determined just put your name and size down on the sheet of paper. We are holding the cost the same as the Mission Sunday t-shirts from two years ago at $7.00. In fact, it is the same style of t-shirt no tags in the back. In the past, a t-shirt was especially designed and sold for Mission Sunday. This time we want to encourage members and guests to wear the t-shirt for any churchsponsored mission event that they are attending including Mission Sunday but also others such as Day Center meals, Respite Care, Murdock Villa parties, Mission Trips, Restore Hope, etc. T-shirts will be ordered Wednesday, April 6 and should be ready for pick up the last week of April (beginning Sunday April 24). Just in time to wear for Mission Sunday on May 1. Blessings, Missy Come and Experience It!
