First Presbyterian Church August 2017 Whiteville, NC First News To be a light in our community reflecting Christ s love and compassion We serve an amazing and mighty God! When I was ordained twenty years ago, I made a commitment to serve Him in whatever capacity and wherever He led. If I am completely honest with you, as I write this article our lives are in turmoil and chaos! Boxes line the halls and piles of stuff are everywhere. Some of these piles are destined for the dump, others for a thrift store in town, and some better find their way onto a moving truck. And while I may not be able to tell you where most of my worldly possession are, I can tell you that we are busy getting ready to move and join you in ministry. Thinking about our amazing and mighty God (and how He has been moving and continues to move in our lives) is quite humbling. I am humbled, first of all, by God s grace and love in my life whereby He has called me to be His. I am humbled to think that He can love someone like me even to the point of sending His Son to the cross because of my sins. I am humbled by His call in my life to be preacher and pastor, to serve and minister with His people. I am further humbled by the trust which you as a congregation have placed in me as your new pastor. At the same time, I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead as we minister with one another for the glory of God. So in this first newsletter article, let me try to anticipate and answer a couple of common questions. One of the first questions I am often asked is, What should we call you? Well, I have never been very particular or formal. One of our youth used call me Reverend Doctor Mister Joseph Dean Washburn but that is quite a mouthful and probably not very practical. The most common way people address me is either simply by my name, Joseph, or as Pastor Joe. Of course, even Pastor Joe is too long for some people and so a lot of folks simply shorten it to PJ. In the end, I want you to be comfortable; after all, we are brothers and sisters in Christ. A second question is, When are you in the office? I have found the life of a pastor to be quite unpredictable at times with any ring of the telephone, my life and schedule can change. But there are some typical patterns I try to follow. My normal schedule is that you will find me in the office Monday through Thursday. I do my best to schedule appointments and meetings following lunch, but that is not always possible nor practical. You are welcome to drop by, but please understand that at times my typical pattern will have been interrupted. I would also add that I usually close my door and retreat to my office on Thursday mornings to write my sermon. Other than that, I usually try to have an open door policy so feel free to drop by and visit for a bit. How can you connect with me or contact me? My email address is pastorjoe@fpcwhiteville.org. I will have a local cell phone number, but I ll have to share that later. I need to finish with my responsibilities at Culdee before switching my number, but we will make it available just as soon as we can. If you are on Social Media, I invite you to find me. I rarely send a friend request (not everyone wants to be friends with the pastor) but I rarely turn down requests. On Facebook, I am Pastor Joe Washburn. On Twitter, I can be found at PastorJWashburn. LinkedIn is easy, Joseph Washburn. To find me on Instagram, search for blowboat (remember, we used to have a sailboat!). I also invite you to look for me on YouTube. The easiest way is to go to YouTube and do a search for Rev. Joseph Washburn. On YouTube you will find past sermons, but I also do a weekly teaching series, impacts - short videos to help you think and grow in your faith. New videos are posted every Tuesday. I should probably share that I have a few quirks about me that I hope you can overlook or accept. I love the word y all - it seems to be a perfectly good plural form of you and has quite naturally worked itself into this southern boy s

vocabulary. I have an unhealthy appetite for two things: jelly beans and Mexican food! (Of course, I pretty much like most other food too except for brussels sprouts and deviled eggs!) Well, I hope this gives you a little bit more of an introduction to me. I am praying for you daily and look forward to getting moved so we can get started in ministry together. - Pastor Joe "Pick" an apple from the tree in the Narthex. If you want to donate supplies, choose a red apple which lists various items needed. Supplies can be dropped off in the church office by Sunday, August 6th. To help organize supplies on August 11th, or work the event on August 12th, please choose a green apple. If you are volunteering your time, please write your name and when you will help on the sheet on the podium next to the tree. To donate money, please make your check out to FPC with "School Supply Giveaway" in the memo line. The Outreach Committee thanks you for your support! We will return to regular worship hours on September 11 th, 2017. First Sermon: August 20 th Family Night Supper: August 23 rd Saturday, August 26 Save the Date! Sunday, September 10 End of Summer Celebration Pool Party! Youth Kickoff Party Thurston s House 2:00-4:00 pm Gray Lake House, Lake Waccamaw Younger Youth, Grades 3-5 Youth, Grades 6-12 The office has been updating our records and trying to make everything as accurate as possible. Please take the time to make sure all phone numbers, email addresses, and birthdays, etc. are in the church database. Thank you! Each room or area will have a list of tasks: dusting, organizing, deep cleaning, window washing, etc. Bring some cleaning cloths, window cleaner, bucket, etc. A committee member will be available during the work periods. We look forward to seeing you! August 3, 6:00-9:00 PM August 4, 5:00-8:00 PM August 5, 8:30 AM-1:00 PM Also, on Saturday morning, August 5, some volunteers will be needed at the Presbyterian Manse on Pecan Lane at Lake Waccamaw. The yard needs some tender, loving care. Large magnolia leaves from the neighbor s tree are everywhere, the azaleas and hedges along the borders are unkempt, the house s siding needs a good sweeping, etc. With enough people, we could knock it out in a morning. Tools needed would be hedge clippers (power and manual), a lightweight chainsaw, rakes, wheelbarrows, pitchforks, and some heavy-duty utility brooms. August 5, 8:30-noon.
