St. Paul Lutheran Church and School Bonduel, Wisconsin September 22/23, 2018 The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost Welcome to the House of the Lord Twelve disciples/apostles. Peter, James and John are often spoken of as Jesus inner circle. Was there a pecking order with the apostles? Who was at the top? This is a question that apparently arose among the apostles. Our reading from James speaks of the conduct of wisdom and the opposing ways of the world. Jesus teaches his disciples, If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. (Mark 9:35) As we gather for worship, we thank God that Jesus took the part of being servant of all as He humbled Himself, even unto death. Come! Let us worship Him! T T T Opening Hymn 794 The Lord, My God, Be Praised Confession and Absolution page 151 Psalmody Psalm 54 O God, save me, by your name, and vindicate me by your might. O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth. For strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves. Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life. He will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them. With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good.

For he has delivered me from every trouble, and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Kyrie page 152 Hymn of Praise Voices Raised to You We Offer 795 (1, 5) Salutation and Prayer of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Voices raised to You we offer; Tune them, God, for songs of praise. Hearts and hands we bring in tribute For Your gifts through all our days. Alleluia! Alleluia! Triune God, to You we sing! How can any praise we offer Measure all the thanks we owe? Take our hearts and hands and voices Gifts of love we can bestow. Alleluia! Alleluia! Triune God, to You we sing! Let us pray. O God, whose strength is made perfect in weakness, grant us humility and childlike faith that we may please You in both will and deed; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Music 7:00pm Jehovah, Let Me Now Adore You 8:00am Come, Let Us Sing 10:15am On Eagle s Wings

Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 11:18 20 The Lord made it known to me and I knew; then you showed me their deeds. 19 But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more. 20 But, O Lord of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Epistle Reading James 3:13 4:10 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. 4:1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse page 156 Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia.

The Holy Gospel The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the ninth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. [The disciples] went on from there and passed through Galilee. And [Jesus] did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise. 32 But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him. 33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, What were you discussing on the way? 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. Apostles Creed page 158 or inside back cover of hymnal Hymn 536 One Thing s Needful (1, 3 5 Sermon Offering Please complete the friendship register found at the end of the pew. Litany of Prayers Let us pray. Dear gracious eternal God, Hear our prayer as we gather before Your throne of grace. For the gift of adoption into Your Family We give You thanks. For the redemption and forgiveness and gift of eternal life We give you thanks and praise. That all may be saved and come to the knowledge of Your love and grace towards us in Christ We call upon You to be graciously working in our midst.

That we may be Your presence and proclaim Your goodness to our community Place on our hearts those whom You would have us bring the message of Good News. For our families, grandparents and parents and their children Pour out Your Spirit. Bless each of our homes That they may be homes of Christian growth. We pledged to give over $1,000,000 in three years above and beyond our regular offerings. Each of us designated our special offering to be applied to any or all of four areas: Our church/school mortgage Our school HVAC renovation Our three adopted missionaries Our area Lutheran High School, WRLHS This summer, intense work began to dismantle, remove, and replace the 90-year-old school boiler system with a new heating and air-conditioning system. Generous bids and donated labor saved us thousands. The HOPE that we have is different from all others. Our everyday use of the word hope refers to a desire for something little or large with no guaranteed outcome. The Bible uses the word hope differently. Our hope refers to a guaranteed receiving of a future reality. The reality is paradise. The guarantee is the cross of Christ and His empty tomb. Our receiving is through Baptism and the gift of faith. Our Hope is in Him.

Bring it Home Family Time with Great Bible Stories Beginning in November, each week we will post five Bible Stories following the contents of The Story Bible, the children s Bible story book with the beautiful corresponding artwork. (This is the gift book we give to our congregation s 3-year olds each year.) We will also post the corresponding chapter and verses from the Bible. The idea is that each week for thirty weeks, we will hear five Bible stories at home. What Bible are we to use? Two options: 1. For little children ages 0-6, The Story Bible is our recommendation. They retail for $30. They are on sale for $22, including shipping. We have pre-ordered a couple stacks. You are welcome to pick one up for $22. We are taking orders, as well. 2. You may use your own Bible. You may also order a Bible by signing up in the church entry. Let s look forward to this 30-week time together with great Bible stories in our Bring it Home Bible reading program. Involve your children. Encourage others. Nancy and I are looking forward to it after our evening meal together. Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ (Romans 10:17).
