3 This article is a recycled newsletter article, but it shares an important message. Read it as if you were trying to improve yourself and your Christian witness in the world in which you live. Apply the questions to your life and genuinely attempt to refocus so that you might live in a way that pleases God so it attracts others to the work of God in your life. Inner Beauty He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 We live in an ultra competitive world and it is obvious when you watch reality TV. This week I came across a program that searched for both physical and inner beauty in a person. The contestants knew they were competing against one another for their outward appearance but were unaware that they were being judged on how they responded when placed in situations that would reveal their hearts. In the final moments of the show the two men, one which would be eliminated, were tested on how kind they were as they were preparing to give their final plea to the judges. Both contestants failed miserably. The person eliminated was ready to leave the show when the judges revealed the premise of the show and shared video clips of his behaviors. He said something like, If I knew we were being judged on how nice we could be I would have been different. As Christians we are always being judged by our heart; foremost by God, but also by the people with whom we come into contact daily. God and people alike are not so concerned about outward actions as they are looking for genuine people of faith. Micah s recorded words share how we are expected to act on a daily basis. The Lord is concerned about our hearts. We can outwardly be perceived as living most gracious lives, but if we have unhealthy hearts it is unpleasant to God. So Micah says this is what God requires of you: act justly, love mercy, and be humble before God. How do others perceive you? This is a great question to ask. Although we are to be more concerned with how God perceives us, starting with people s perceptions can be a real test. Are you genuinely kind? Are you tolerant of others? Are you merciful and humble when not in the presence of Christian friends? Is your heart humble as a result of God s touch, and as a result do you concern yourself with others needs? Here is your challenge for the next couple months. Look closely at how you respond to others in situations outside the church, and when you think no one is observing you. Then assess yourself. Are you genuinely living justly? Are you practicing mercy? Do you have a humble heart? This is the criteria by which God assesses your heart. How would you fair if you were in a contest that measured your inner beauty?
