St. Bernard Parish 2040 Hillside Ln. Green Bay, Wisconsin 54302 (920)468-4811 - www.stbernardgb.org September 22 & 23, 2018 On Saturday, Sept 8 some of our middle school and high school religious education students experienced the first of three service retreats at Fr. Carr s Place 2B in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This year, we ve decided to change the pace of religious education in the fall for our middle school and high school students and offer a service retreat instead of Wednesday night classes. This is to encourage a living out of their faith and what they ve learned during religious education classes. Fr. Carr s Place 2B is a food pantry, homeless shelter, soup kitchen, and health clinic. Every Wednesday night religious education students in 6th-11th grade are asked to attend one service retreat in the Fall and then pick up with religious education classes in the Spring. For more information, please contact Adam Horn: adam@stbernardcong.org.

You are invited to join us in this simple public awareness campaign advancing the dignity of the unborn child and their right to a full existence from the moment of conception. Our location will be on the public right-of-way, outside Planned Parenthood, which is sadly located in the shopping center at 2605 South Oneida Street, Green Bay, Wisconsin near Red Robin. The national campaign describes 40 Days for Life as follows: 40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, among their own friends and in their own families. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of his plan for the end of the tragedy of abortion. It draws attention to this evil through the use of a three-point program: 1) Prayer and fasting 2) Constant vigil 3) Community outreach. The 40-day campaign tracks biblical history where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ s resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of his people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge. The visible, public centerpiece of 40 Days for Life is a focused, 40-day, non-stop, round-the-clock prayer vigil outside a single Planned Parenthood center or another abortion facility in one s community. It is a peaceful and educational presence. Those who are called to stand witness during this 24-hour-a -day presence, send a message to the community about the tragic reality of abortion. It also serves as a call to conversion and repentance for those who work at the abortion center, its affiliates and to those who patronize the facility. It also seeks to provide resources to local media and organizations. During the 40 Day experience we pray for: Women who are at risk of having an abortion, innocent children who are at risk of perishing, men and women who carry the pain of a past abortion experience, workers at Planned Parenthood facilities, their affiliates and other abortion centers. We pray for local, regional, and national leaders, revival and renewal in our churches, and repentance and healing throughout our nation. People of faith are invited to fast throughout 40 Days for Life, knowing the spiritual value of fasting as Christ stated. We can fast from certain foods, television, from apathy and indifference. We can fast from whatever it is that separates us from God. Our parish will be praying for both those who are able to actively take part in on-site witness and for those who will support them from afar. What could you do? You are most welcome to join our parish Knights of Columbus men any Saturday from 2pm-4pm as they go and pray. More information is available on site. Thank you for your prayers! Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

September 22 & 23, 2018 PAGE 3 The 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. (MARK 9:35) Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is to make holy, from the words sacer = sacred and facere = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.
