Enjoying God s Fellowship Sermon Unity, Liberty, and Conformity Pastor Bill Evans Sermon text: Romans 14:1-13a 1 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written, As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. 13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, (ESV) Sending Song Take Us, O Lord Page 13 Benediction 6
Offertory All to Jesus I Surrender All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live. All to Jesus I surrender, Humbly at His feet I bow; Worldly pleasures all forsaken, Take me, Jesus, take me now. Chorus I surrender all, I surrender all. All to Thee my blessed Savior, I surrender all. All to Jesus I surrender, Make me, Savior, wholly Thine; Let me feel the Holy Spirit Truly know that Thou art mine. Gathering Song Our Great God Eternal God, Unchanging, Mysterious and unknown. Your boundless love unfailing, In grace and mercy shown. Bright seraphim in endless flight around your glorious throne. They raise their voices day and night in praise to you alone. Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Lord, We are weak and frail, Helpless in the storm. Surround us with your angels, Hold us in your arms. Our cold and ruthless enemy, His pleasure is our harm. Rise up, O Lord, And he will flee before our Sovereign God. Let every creature in the sea and every flying bird; Let every mountain, Every field and valley of the earth; Let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe Sing praises to the Living God, Who rules them by His word. Song of Praise All I Have Is Christ I once was lost in darkest night, Yet thought I knew the way; The sin that promised joy and life Had led me to the grave. I had no hope that You would own A rebel to Your will, And if You had not loved me first I would refuse You still. But as I ran my hell-bound race, Indifferent to the cost, You looked upon my helpless state And led me to the cross. And I beheld God s love displayed, You suffered in my place; You bore the wrath reserved for me; Now all I know is grace! Chorus Hallelujah! All I have is Christ! Hallelujah! Jesus is my life! Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone And live so all might see The strength to follow Your commands Could never come from me. O Father, use my ransomed life In any way You choose, And let my song forever be: My only boast is You. 12 Jordan Kauflin 2008 Sovereign Grace Praise (Admin. by EMI Christian Music Publishing) CCLI License # 56194
Sending Song Take Us, O Lord O how He takes the cross; O how He lifts it up to take the weight from us. O how He pays the cost; O how He drinks the cup to make a place for us. Take us, O Lord, and all we have known. Shape us, O Lord, and form us into Your own! Take every heart, and know every sin. Break us, O Lord, that we may be whole again! Hear how He breaks the curse; Hear how He cries aloud. Hear how His voice resounds. O how He forms the words. O how He cries them out: See, it is finished now! How deep the wounds He wears; How dark the scars He shows. How well the name He knows: written upon His palms, O what a name to find: that name before Him, mine! 2010 New Jerusalem Music Isaac Wardell 13
Reflection: Reflection & Preparation This Week: Romans 14:1-13 We walk a very thin line. The weaker brother is not to destroy the freedom of all in the church. At the same time, we can forego our freedom for a time out of consideration for our weaker brother. Paul is opposing a spirit of arrogance that leads us to insist on our rights to do whatever we please no matter what The stronger brother has to be willing to forego his strength for the sake of the weaker brother, yet the church must never allow the weaker one to establish his weakness as law for the Christian community. (R.C. Sproul, Romans, pg. 475) Psalm 37:17-24 The Steps of a Man as Established by the LORD 1 Corinthians 8:7-11 Take Care with Your Freedom 1 Corinthians 10:23-33 Whatever You Do, Do All for the Glory of God Prayer: O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what You would have us to do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in Your light we may see light, and in Your straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In Preparation for Sunday: Romans 14:13-15:6 14
