We at St. Mark Presbyterian Church are not a people without history. This month marks our 65 th year as a congregation. Our history began with worship service on June 28, 1953. Instead of going the way of the prairie wind, we were led by the Holy Spirit to help build God's Kingdom at the corner of Ferguson Road and Millmar Drive. So, 65 years later, we can reflect on our heritage, pause in the moment to celebrate with a happy dance, and look toward the future with a strong wind at our backs provided by the Holy Spirit. Our story is hardly new, much less unique. Since ancient times, God s pilgrim people responded to His call for redemption. People - often very flawed and frequently reluctant - joined the journey to woo back those wandering away from the Creator. From this long list of imperfect folks called to participate in God's plan are some names that are familiar: Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph. But then the greatest part of the plan was revealed in what we now know as the New Testament. Matthew records the words of Jesus drawing the distinction between the old sojourners and the new: Therefore, every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old. Matt. 13:52 (ESV) Christians treasure our history. And during our 65th anniversary, we at St. Mark have every intention of honoring our heritage. But we're not called to reside in past glories, as wonderful as they may be. Jesus says we're also to treasure what is new. This anniversary is going to be a great celebration in which we'll celebrate our story and encourage the new chapters. We will look at the future with hope and joy, thrilled with the excitement of what God has planned for St. Mark. He's not done with us. Far from it. The same amazing grace that has led us safe thus far is the same amazing grace that will lead us home. Happy anniversary, St. Mark! Blessings, Pastor Rick

John and I received such warm and caring concerns from our St. Mark family. It is stressful to relate John s journey beginning July 2015 through present May 2018. We are truly blessed to have met so many people who have walked with us in love and prayers. The Spindle cell cancer is in remission. Next PET scan is in July. Blessings to all, John and Melba What is God s Purpose for Your Life? The question at the top of this article might be familiar to you. It is the first Question of the Presbyterian Study Catechism. Catechisms always have an answer for every question. Here s the answer to the question is: God wills that I should live by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, for the love of God, and in the communion of the Holy Spirit. Years ago I ran across several questions recently that were designed to help us reflect on how we might live into that purpose. 1. What specific things do you think that God wills for your life that might be different from what God wills for someone else s life? 2. What special gifts or talents have you been given to use for God s purpose? 3. How can you practice putting those gifts to work this week? Have you ever pondered those or similar questions? Let me encourage you to prayerfully explore those questions this month. Try it no matter how old you are. Maybe you will discover that you are being called by God to try something new and you need to begin to explore ways to do that. Or you just might find that you are doing exactly what God wants you to be doing. Either way hopefully you will be reminded that you are a beloved child of God. And that s something to celebrate. The GriefShare meetings at St. Mark are coming to the end of our 13-week program. Our last group meeting will be on June 14, 2018, Lesson 13. We will break for the summer and begin the same 13-week program on September 13, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. in the church parlor. St. Mark is Celebrating 65 th Anniversary Sunday, June 24, 2018 St. Mark Presbyterian Church held its first worship service in a temporary building on June 28, 1953. At a congregational meeting that afternoon, 34 charter members adopted the name St. Mark. Also, officers were elected, and Joe Slicker was called as pastor. By December 1953, the congregation had grown to 65 members and was worshipping in the first permanent building. Later construction included Austin Hall (1955), Princeton Hall (1960) and Family Center (1978). The sanctuary was remodeled in 1968 and 1997. Since 1953, seven senior pastors (Joe Slicker, Forrest Whitworth, John Danhof, Bill Tiemann, Charles Fox, Fred Abney and Rick Brooks) have served St. Mark. Gary O Neal has been music director and organist since 1971. St. Mark previously celebrated anniversaries of 25 years (1978), 50 years (2003) and 60 years (2013). In 2018, the church will commemorate its 65 th year with a new cookbook, featuring 200 recipes including some new ones and some vintage ones from earlier cookbooks. The Fellowship Committee will host a St. Mark Cooks Potluck Luncheon following worship on Sunday, June 24. Brisket will be provided by the committee. The congregation is asked to bring a side dish or dessert, preferably something made from a recipe submitted for the anniversary cookbook. Cookbooks will be available for purchase at the luncheon.
