May 13, 2018 7 th Sunday of Easter Mother s Day Zion Lutheran Church 17927 Dice Road, Hemlock, MI 48626 ~ Church Office 642-5909 ~ Pastor Cell 989-964-8722 The Mothering Love of Jesus that Keeps God s Children Safe AS WE GATHER In the Gospel, Jesus, in His High Priestly Prayer, prays that all who have received His Word may be one and that His joy may be fulfilled in us. He sanctifies us together in the truth of His Word as we live as resident aliens in this world. On Mother s Day, we see how the love of a good Christian mother mirrors the love in Jesus prayer and saving efforts for all God s children to grow and thrive, remain faithful and saved by grace through faith in Him and the promises of His Word. Happy Mother s Day! Prelude Music Ringing of the Bell Pastoral Welcome Greeting Each Other Invocation and Opening Sentences P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: And Jesus said, "Come!" C: To all mothers and all children and all: He said, Come! P: To the motherless and the childless: He said, Come! C: To all who long to be mothered: He said, Come! P: Come unto Me all you who labor and are heavy-laden, C: And I will give you rest. P: Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, C: For I am gentle and humble of heart 1

P: And you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 10:28) Proverbs 31:10-12, 25-30 read responsively: Men: A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. Women: She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. All: Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Prayer of Confession and Faith (in unison) Lord, many of us read these words from Your Holy Word and are inspired, encouraged, and grateful. But some of us are tempted to doubt That Your grace could ever produce these kinds of virtues in our lives. Some of us are tempted by resentment and unforgiveness because of those who have let us down. Some of us are tempted to condemn ourselves for past failings, and all of us remember times when we have fallen short. Forgive us for all our sins, including doubt, resentment, unforgiving hearts, and self-condemning attitudes. Remind us of your forgiveness, always available in Jesus Christ. In Spite of our failures and sin, We trust in Your power to transform our lives. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, Lord Jesus, so that our lives may bring Joy to Your world And Praise to Your Name. Amen. Praise Song Shine, Jesus, Shine Lord the light of Your love is shining, In the midst of the darkness shining; Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us, Set us free by the truth You now bring us; Shine on me. Shine on me. 2

Refrain: Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father s glory; Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy; Send forth Your word, Lord and let there be light. Lord, I come to Your awesome presence, From the shadows into Your radiance; By the blood I may enter Your brightness; Search me, try me, consume all my darkness; Shine on me. Shine on me. Refrain As we gaze on your kingly brightness, So our faces display your likeness, ever changing from glory to glory. Mirrored here, may our lives tell your story. Shine on me, shine on me. Refrain Holy Gospel John 17:11b-19 Memory Verse I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 Praise Song Because He Lives God sent His Son ~ they called Him Jesus; He came to love, heal and forgive. He lived and died to buy my pardon; An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives. Refrain: Because He lives, I can face tomorrow; Because He lives, all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living just because He lives. How sweet to hold a newborn baby, And feel the pride and joy he gives; But greater still the calm assurance: This child can face uncertain days because He lives. Refrain 3

And then one day I ll cross the river; I ll fight life s final war with pain. And then, as death gives way to vic try, I ll see the lights of glory and I ll know He reigns. Refrain Sermon A Mother s Prayer for Her Children John 17:11b-19 Holy Father in Thy Mercy TLH 643 Holy Father, in Thy mercy Hear our anxious prayer; Keep our loved ones who are absent Neath Thy care. Jesus, Savior, let Thy presence Be their light and guide; Keep, oh, keep them in their weakness At Thy side. When in sorrow, when in danger, When in loneliness, In Thy love look down and comfort Their distress. May the joy of Thy salvation Be their strength and stay! May they love and may they praise Thee Day by day! Holy Spirit, let Thy teaching Sanctify their life; Send Thy grace that they may conquer In the strife. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, God the One in Three, Bless them, guide them, save them, keep them, Near to Thee. Offerings and Tithes Mother s Day Prayer Let us pray: Lord, on this day set aside to honor and remember mothers, we give you thanks for our mothers. P: We pray for those people present who are grieving the loss of their mother in the past year. C: Grant them comfort and hope in Christ s resurrection. 5

P: Lord, we thank you for the gift of motherhood. We thank you for the many examples of faithful mothers in Scripture, like Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Lois. P: We are mindful this day of all these women, and especially Mary the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, who had the courage in faith to say yes to your calling. May all the women gathered here today emulate these examples of faith. And may they model for all the rest of us what it means to be your disciple. Bless them on this special day; in the name of Jesus Christ. Let us also pray for all the children of God who need Your comforting and healing love C: Amen. Hymn For All the Faithful Women LSB 855 vv.1, 13, 3-4 The Lord s Prayer The Blessing P: Go into your week, with the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, And knowing that you are embraced by the love of God; And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit to bless you with Love that is sweeter and more tender than any you have ever known. C: Amen. Praise Song Blessed Assurance Blessèd assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood. Refrain: This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior, all the day long; This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior, all the day long. Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels descending bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Refrain Perfect submission, all is at rest I in my Savior am happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. Refrain 6

Voters Assembly meeting will be held following the service next Sunday, May 20. All confirmed members age 18 and over are encouraged to attend. Dear people of Zion, I appreciate the grace and kindness that so many people extended to me and Sandi and Debbie during our brief visit April 29. So many more happy memories added to the host of happy memories I have cherished over the years. I especially appreciate the grace of everyone, forgiving my inability to come up with their name as we saw each other. If God is willing and grants me the ability, I will try to visit again next summer for a bit longer time. I pray God will continue to bless you all with His constant love. Easter joy and peace to you, Pastor Elmer Schiefer 7
