PAUL AND BARNABAS TOLD ABOUT JESUS LIFE POINT: God wants people to cooperate with others willingly. LEADER BIBLE STUDY COMMUNITY A N D W O R L D LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING The Bible tells me to love others in my community and world. BIBLE PASSAGE Acts 14 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE We are God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 UNIT VERSE You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 He s a god! She s heavenly! Rock, movie, and sports heroes are often considered divine by their admirers. Though most of those fans don t really think their idols are gods or goddesses, some fans come dangerously close to practicing idolatry. Barnabas and Paul experienced something similar in their missionary work. The men continued going to synagogues to preach about Jesus. Many Jews and Gentiles were saved as the missionaries performed signs and miracles in Iconium. Opposition intensified, so they decided to move on to Lycaonia. In the town of Lystra, the missionaries healed a lame man who put his faith in Christ. However, some witnesses of the miracle jumped to the conclusion that they were Greek gods. They thought Barnabas was Zeus and Paul was Hermes. A priest from the local temple even brought oxen to sacrifice to them. The two men strongly objected to the homage, insisting they were only humans who came to tell them about the one true God. The Jews from Antioch and Iconium came and quickly turned the people against them, and the people even stoned Paul. He survived, but he and Barnabas left the next day. They traced their way back through the cities where they had made converts, encouraging them and appointing leaders for the churches. Eventually, they returned home to Antioch to report all God had done on their journey. They were not gods, but they sure were heroes! Why were Paul and Barnabas mistaken for Greek gods? Do you think God still does healing miracles to show His power? Why or why not? SUGGESTED DATE: week of July 16 NOTE: Downloadable versions of items identified as CD are available in the Music and Print Extras Bundle. PRACTICE BIBLE SKILLS Seek And Find 1. Explain that the kids will work as one team to move a game marker up the mountain. The first player will spin the spinner and move the game marker from Start, up the path the number of spaces indicated. This time, the player will name any Bible book that has that letter in its name, and everyone will look to find what Division of the Bible it is in. Play will then pass to the next player. 2. Ask what all the Bible stories this month have in common. (All are from the Book of Acts which is found in the New Testament.) 3. Option: Paul and Barnabas Told About Jesus Coloring Pages (CD). INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY All Together Now 1. Designate a beginning line and a finishing line. Depending on the size of your group, have two, three, or four kids hold on to the ends or corners of a towel. Direct the kids to stand so that the towels are side-by-side. Explain that you will place a ball on the nearest towel and the kids holding that towel must roll the ball from their towel to the other towel (without dropping it). When the ball is transferred, the kids with the nearest towel must then run with their towel to the other side of the second towel. When they are in place, the kids with the second towel must roll the ball from their towel to the one that just moved. Explain that kids will keep leapfrogging until they reach the finish line. 2. Praise the kids for working together, or cooperating, to transfer the ball. Mention that today s Bible story is about people who cooperated, and that today the kids will learn that God wants people to cooperate with others willingly. Pack Item 14: Take a Hike! A game marker, such as a paper clip, button, or marker cap DVD Two Option: beach towels or other large towels and a lightweight ball If you have a large group of kids, provide more towels and balls. Let the teams race to finish first. Show the Paul and Barnabas Told About Jesus: Introduction video. Teacher Tip Kids with special needs might benefit from using a Kids Visual Schedule. STUDY THE BIBLE LEARN THE WEEKLY VERSE AND SING Practice Ephesians 2:10 Lead the kids to read Ephesians 2:10 from the poster you made. Form three groups with one or more kids in each group. Assign each group a segment of the verse to read as you point to it. Guide the groups to read the verse several times. Switch parts a time or two and practice as before. Say the whole verse together. Explain that this verse says that people are made to do good works, good things, that God wants them to do. Pack Items 10-13 and 18: Unit 2 Banner, Words to Use, Acts 1:8, Unit 2 Questions, and It Really Happened! Teaching Picture 7 CD DVD A large sheet of paper, a marker, and small sticky notes On the paper, print the words of Ephesians 2:10. Please note: If a teacher plans to lead Choice 2 ( Story Towers ) during Live It Out, you will need to photocopy It Really Happened! before cutting it apart. Use Bibles. Guide the kids to find the Unit Verse, Acts 1:8 in their Bibles. Read or say the verse together. Remind the kids that a witness is someone who tells what he knows. Sing. Lead the kids to sing Words to Use (track 4). TELL THE BIBLE STORY Define cooperation. Explain that cooperation is working together to get something done. Show the Teaching Picture and encourage the kids to find out who in today s Bible story cooperated in a good way and who cooperated in a bad way. Open your Bible to Acts 14. Explain that Barnabas and Paul are still on their mission trip to tell people about Jesus. Tell the Bible story in your own words. Tell the Bible Story: Paul and Barnabas Told About Jesus Paul and Barnabas preached and taught at the synagogue. Many people believed in Jesus. Other people refused to believe. Those people said evil things about Paul and Barnabas, but the men continued preaching. The two men relied on God to help them tell people about Jesus. They did amazing things through God s power. However, the people saying bad things about Paul and Barnabas plotted to kill them. When Paul and Barnabas found out the plan they hurried to the town of Lystra. In Lystra, Paul and Barnabas found a man who had never walked. Paul said to him, Stand up! The man jumped up! He walked around! The crowds yelled in their own language, The gods have come down as people! They thought Paul and Barnabas were gods! They tried to worship 48 Unit 2, SeSSion 3

LIFE POINT God wants people to cooperate with others willingly. the two men. When Paul and Barnabas realized what they were saying, they shouted, Why are you doing this? We are men like you! We want to tell you good news so that you will turn to God! Some people who had heard Paul preach in other places arrived in the town. They convinced the crowd that Paul was evil and was disobedient to God. The crowd threw stones at Paul until they thought he was dead. The believers from the town stood around Paul. Soon he just got up. Paul and Barnabas left Lystra and went to the next city. After some time passed, Paul and Barnabas went back to the towns they had visited. They encouraged the believers in each place. Finally, the men sailed back to the church in Antioch that had sent them out to preach. They reported all that had happened and all God had done. BASED ON ACTS 14 REVIEW AND APPLY LEARNING Use Bibles. Guide the kids to locate Acts 14:10 in their Bibles. Ask what Paul said to the man who could not walk. TEACHING TIP You can download a kid-friendly gospel presentation at lifeway.com/ kidsgospelpresentation. Practice cooperation. Distribute the It Really Happened! strips. Read the strips aloud. For each statement, ask if it is an example of cooperating in a good way or a bad way. Form teams. Ask each of the questions for this session. Tell each team to work together to decide on an answer. For each question tell them to pick a different team member to tell the answer they have chosen. Ask kids how they can cooperate at home, on the playground, and at church. Show the Paul and Barnabas Told About Jesus: Life Action video. Ask who Lucia s lab partner was. (Juniper) Ask how Junie and Lucia usually got along. (They didn t.) Ask what Chuck said was a way to glorify God. (cooperating with others ; committing to work together for the best outcome) PRAY Invite the kids to silently ask God to help them cooperate willingly to do what He wants. LIVE IT OUT CHOICE 1 Kids Activity Pages Teaching Picture 7 Hand sanitizer, graham crackers, frosting, plastic knives, sprinkles, plastic wrap, tape, note cards, a marker, and napkins CHOICE 2 Kids Activity Pages Pack Item 18: It Really Happened! Up to 8 small boxes, tape, drawing paper, scissors, and markers or crayons Make copies of the pack item, one for each child and one for the group. Option: Cover the boxes with colored paper or wrapping paper, or lead the kids to do so. CHOICE 1 Treats to Make and Share 1. Complete the Kids Activity Page. 2. Show the Teaching Picture. Lead the kids to recall facts about the Bible story. 3. Suggest the kids work together to make a treat to give away as they tell something about Jesus. Explain that one child will spread frosting on a graham cracker and pass it to the next child who will add sprinkles to the top. That child will pass the cracker to the next child who will wrap it in plastic wrap and then pass the wrapped cracker to another child. The fourth child will add a note card with a message written by the last child. (If you do not have five kids, let kids do more than one step each. If you have more kids, make multiple groups.) 4. Explain that the kids will be making several treats, including one for themselves. After a few cookies have been made, call out Switch, and tell the kids to rotate so that each child will be doing whatever job came after his original job. (For example, the child who was adding sprinkles will now be wrapping the crackers.) If practical, have the kids change jobs more than once. 5. Praise the kids for working together to accomplish the job. Remind them that God wants people to cooperate with others willingly. CHOICE 2 Story Towers 1. Complete the Kids Activity Page. 2. Direct the kids to work together to tape It Really Happened! strips to the front of boxes to create a Story Tower. (If you do not have eight boxes, kids can tape two strips to one or more boxes.) 3. Guide the group to stack the boxes so that the It Really Happened! strips tell the story in the correct order (from bottom to top). Suggest that each child choose a strip to illustrate. Provide paper and other materials. As the kids work, talk about ways they can cooperate willingly with others in ways that God would want. Help each child cut out and attach her illustration on a box next to the correct strip. 4. Praise the kids for working together. Remind the kids that God wants people to cooperate with others willingly. 5. Suggest that the kids take home an It Really Happened! page. Ask how they could use the strips to make a story tower. 50 Unit 2, SeSSion 3

LIFE POINT God wants people to cooperate with others willingly. CHOICE 3 Letter Game 1. Complete the Kids Activity Page. 2. Distribute the letter cards equally. Call out the name Paul. Explain that the kids must work together and use their letters to correctly spell the word. Praise the kids for working together. Ask the kids to name a fact about Paul from today s Bible story. Mix the cards that were used and redistribute them. 3. Explain that for the next words you call out, you will time kids as they cooperate to spell the word. For each word the kids spell out in less than 30 seconds, they will earn 30 points. Each word they can spell out in 31 to 60 seconds will earn 20 points and words taking more than 60 seconds will earn 10 points. Being able to tell how the word was used in the Bible story will earn a bonus of 10 points. Challenge the group to get as many points as they can. 4. Call words, one at a time, from this list: believe, stone, feet, healed, sacrifice, worship, crowd, good news, God, encouraged, church, report, Barnabas, synagogue. Keep score as kids spell the words by working together. If needed, kids may look for the spelling of the words in the Bible passage. 5. Congratulate the kids for cooperating (working together), to spell all the words that they spelled. Lead the group to say the Life Point: God wants people to cooperate with others willingly. WRAP UP Missions Emphasis: Explain that some church buildings in Norway are sitting empty or they have become cafes or places of business. Show the video, Norway Needs Jesus or review the missions story. (CD) Pray that churches in Norway and in the United States will be full of people who want to learn more about Jesus.
