I Chronicles 12:32 To The Men Of The Road UMC: I greet you in the blessed name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your annual Men s Day Celebration! As I consider your theme and scripture, Men, Leading the Way From Good to Great! I Chronicles 12:32, we find that the sons of Issachar had an anointing which gave them a unique insight into God s timing of things past, present and future. These men were mighty men of valor. (I Chronicles 7:1-5). Their knowledge of God s work caused them to become the primary cultivators of Israel s treasurers and their counsel and interpretation of Scriptures were received as authoritative. I assert that young men who possess the anointing of Issachar are sorely needed in our world today. I believe that we are experiencing a decisive moment in our church and society. This situation we face today is not economic, environmental, political or sociobiological. Instead, it is a crises of leadership at the most basic level. We only need to remember the recent events of Ferguson, Florida, New York, and most recently, Charleston, South Carolina, to agree that we are living in a crucial time in history. It is a crisis requiring a dramatic cultural shift in order to correct the course of history. Booker T. Washington said, the older I grow, the more I am convinced that there is no education which one can get from books and costly apparatus that is equal to that which can be gotten from contact with great men and women. To this end, I am steeped in appreciation to you for stepping forward, and taking intentional steps with God s Word and a good strategy to create a mentoring ministry to build our young boys into strong young men. You will change their reality when it comes to expanding their potential, eliminating them as a statistic and assisting them in experiencing a successful future. It is time for the real church to rise because the earth is groaning to see any real evidence of God! His Power and His People. It s time to stop praying for houses and cars and start praying for people, souls, and workers to work the vineyards for God. I praise God for your leadership in the United Methodist Men and for this joyous celebration today. I am also grateful to our speaker, Mr. Vincent Watkins, a friend to our church, for his presence and unconditional support of our ministry. With a spirit of humility and servanthood, I am, Your sister on The Road, Pastor K

A Word From The United Methodist Men s Chair Grace and Peace to you! As the men of St. Mary s Road, we have witnessed another year of fellowship, leadership and support along the path of Men Leading The Way From Good To Great! We have clearly developed milestones and set objectives following our previous year s events, solidifying the notion that men are the salt of the earth through maintained involvement in the church. We have learned what going the second mile means through our reading of Matthew 5:38-42. In this text we see where roman soldiers could ask citizens to carry the load and the limit was one mile. Jesus instructs us to carry our neighbor s load two miles to show that it is our priority to serve and not just our duty. We have been quite active carrying loads the past year through leading and supporting ministries throughout the church. We continued the journey of Breaking the Chains of the Past through involvement in our first men s retreat held at Pine Mountain, Georgia. Our time together afforded us an opportunity to engage in male soul-talk where we discussed male-specific issues in an effort to strengthen our bond as men through our faith experiences. We will continue to work to win each other s confidence so we can offer mutual encouragement and support. The retreat laid the foundation and was the springboard for this year s theme with our focus on mentorship which has been demonstrated through our work with our young men today. We would be remised if we did not thank Mr. Vincent Watkins, J.D. for sharing with us on this occasion and at several of our men s meetings. He has provided valuable support as we seek to develop our mentoring ministry. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our church for your continued support. Grace to you all, Henry Holt Co-Chair, UMM The Road UMC A Word From The United Methodist Men s Co-Chair Moving from Good to Great is a process that we as a committee welcome and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to help others. It is my belief that the heart beats happiest when it beats for others. We would like for our efforts to help the youth of our city improve their current living practices through our mentoring program. I have said on numerous occasions how valuable human resources are; and today, we assemble to gain insight and inspiration for the youth mentoring process ahead. It is truly a calling to serve without remorse, but for the value of pleasing God. Our joy is intertwined with the joy of others and in serving others we validate the saying of Albert Einstein, who said it best: When we truly take stock of our lives, we must admit that we have done nothing entirely on our own. Our thinking has been fashioned by our many teachers, mentors, including family members. Our ability to function physically is the result in part of our genetic code and the provisions of food, water, and shelter by others. Our spiritual lives are a gift from God himself. We are what we receive, a product of our experiences, and depend on others for survival. Our reactions to these facts drive us to give to others the good things we have been fortunate enough to receive. Yours in Christ, Melvin F. Blackwell Vice-Chairman, UMM The Road UMC Welcome Visitors The mission of The Road UMC is to become a community of believers committed to helping all people to personally know Jesus Christ by delivering a biblically based teaching and preaching of the gospel to those saved and seeking Christ and thereby developing disciples, families and communities through the power of the Holy Spirit. If you are new to our community and looking for a church home or desire to explore your spirituality, please consider us. At The ROAD, we are engaged in the L4 experience: Loving God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength and loving neighbor as thyself. Living a life that is Christ-centered and biblically oriented. Learning to be a disciple of Jesus Christ as we live counter to the culture following wholeheartedly after God in a broken world. Leading others to experience God; being light in darkness and salt in a decaying environment. If you would like to enter into fellowship with The ROAD UMC Come during the Invitation to Discipleship See our pastor or a member after church Call the church office and schedule an appointment to speak with the pastor Email us at stmarysrd@theroadumc.org See one of our greeters or ministers after the worship service This is the working church! Ministry To Men Vision The ministry of men in the local church is defined as a core group of men, partnering with their pastor, to invite and initiate spiritual growth opportunities for all men of the church. Everyone has different gifts, graces and areas of interest. Therefore, opportunities for participation would include diverse ministries of the church, such as prayer groups, missions, Bible studies, retreats, workshops/seminars, small groups in the Wesleyan tradition, leading and participating on committees, teaching Sunday school classes, youth ministries, scouting, mentoring and assisting in leading worship service. The focus is not inward, concentrating only on those who attend a set meeting, but outward to all men, assisting them to engage the process of spiritual growth. Mission Our men to mature as disciples as they encourage formation in others. Goal Our goal is to empower the ministry of Jesus Christ through men within the congregations of the UMC. Pathway Our pathway is a lifelong commitment to spiritual growth to maturity as Christ followers. Our spiritual formation is marked by spiritual reproduction, as our faith passes on in others. How can The General Commission on United Methodist Men (GCUMM) serve local churches? The GCUMM can serve local churches by training and equipping leaders. With that in mind, the GCUMM has developed a new leadership training experience called Men s Ministry Specialist. Men s Ministry Specialist (MMS) is a leadership-development position for laity or clergy who are called by God to the ministry of Jesus Christ through men. A MMS serves the UMC as a resource, promoter, communicator, and connector within and beyond the congregation. He equips and motivates leaders for effective men s ministry through training, inspiration, and assistance. United Methodist Men would like to train at least 1,000 Men s Ministry Specialists to serve local churches. This would mean that there would be about two MMS per conference. Each specialist in a given conference would work with local churches in that conference to create and sustain a thriving ministry for men in the church. Why is men s ministry important? Men lead others best by modeling Jesus Christ in thoughts, words and deeds. Spiritual maturity is signified in spiritual reproduction, as the faith of mature disciples passes on in others. Men growing in Christ become effective spiritual leader in their homes and congregations, working as partners with their spouses and congregational leaders-both lay and clergy. Spiritually growing men help congregations to become vital and alive. Everything desired from and through men comes as a result of men growing spiritually and maturing as disciples: family blessings, stewardship, service, outreach, prayer, spiritual leadership, lifestyle. Evangelism, and faithful obedience. Men are foundational to the life and health of the church. When a man lives daily in surrendered faith, God is honored and many lives are blessed. Transformed hearts are forged only within Christ-centered lives-nothing less is our acceptable offering; nothing less truly reveals Christ.

Mentoring Mentoring young men is an opportunity for me to give back to men who made an investment of themselves, their time and talents to help me when I was young. Time spent mentoring young men have the potential of not only impacting their lives but also the lives of their friends, family, future mates and unborn children. - Ray Lakes Mentoring to me is committing to help someone without limitations, the expectation of compensation, or under certain conditions. Mentoring is taking the time to receive the training to improve/gain the knowledge to mentor proficiently. You can't give what you don't have. - Melvin F. Blackwell Mentoring is a process that always involves communication and when effective it will lead to positive outcomes. - William Winder It means that I should be committed to live out principles of mentorship. Having the faith and GOD s guidance, to be the example that I pray to see when the young man becomes of age. - Darryl Lisbon Young men don't always listen to what is said, but they are always watching to see the example you set and decide if they will follow. Set the example by showing that you care who or what they become in years to come. - Lionel W. Jones It means leadership from an adult perspective, hands on guidance, and love for your fellow man. -Curtis Lark Just as Christ mentored the world by his example; mentoring our young men is important because they can't be what they have not seen. What they see is what they will be. - Mike Powell Mentoring is an opportunity for me to contribute and say " Thank you" for being allowed to live in GOD's world. - Perry Alexander There is no royal road to anything. One thing at a time, all things in succession. That which grows fast, withers as rapidly. That which grows slowly, endures. - Josiah Gilbert Holland, 1819-1881 Mentoring to me is teaching a younger man or boy values to live by. - Johnny Hemingway It is hands on instruction. Mentoring is reaching out in a genuine, loving and caring way with compassion to a young person, giving them the opportunity to grow through their inexperience's and mistakes with the realization that there is someone there to help them up when they fall. My joy is that with the help of God I can reach out with thanksgiving to young men in the church and community. - Henry Holt Mentoring a young man for me is doing it through the word of God, the same way biblical men did throughout history. - Roy Sumlin, Jr. Mentoring to me is to be a positive role model to a younger person by teaching, leading and guiding. - Lawrence Gibbs, Sr. To me mentoring a young man means giving leadership and encouragement. - Robert Montgomery Mentoring is a way of giving back to a young man. To help him understand what it means to be a man who lives by his word and is driven by his actions. - James Jones Mentoring a young man means being a role model by setting an example of how to be a successful and productive member of society. Christ centered, with love, support and respect. - Julius Graham

Song of Praise My God Is Awesome My God is Awesome; He can move mountains; keep me in the valley; Hide me from the rain. My God is Awesome; heals me when I m broken; strength where I ve been weakened; Forever He will reign. My God is awesome Hymn Medley We Are Soldiers In The Army We are soldiers in the army; we have to fight although we have to cry. We have to hold up the blood stained banner; we have to hold it up until we die. (Repeat above) I'm a soldier in the Army of The Lord; I'm a soldier in the Army. (repeat) Marching To Zion Verse 1 Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known; join in a song with sweet accord, join in a song with sweet accord and thus surround the throne, and thus surround the throne. We re marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion; we re marching upward to Zion, the beautiful city of God. Verse 2 Let those refuse to sing who never knew our God; but children of the heavenly King, but children of the heavenly King may speak their joys abroad, may speak their joys abroad. We re marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion; we re marching upward to Zion, the beautiful city of God. Choral Response I Feel Like Going On I feel like going on. I feel like going on. Though trials may come, On every hand, I feel like going on.

Call To Worship As we gather in worship, we believe in the God-vested power that men have, individually and corporately, to change our world, nations, neighborhoods, and homes. And today, we honor men who exhibit integrity, intelligence, and commitment. We appreciate men who have positively affected our lives, teaching us both to lead and to follow, to be prudent while outwardly maintaining strength and conviction, to be noble and remain humble, to be balanced yet impassioned. These are the men we treasure in our midst. We salute you today. Men s Day Litany Leader: The world s human community began with one man. The redemption of humanity was wrought by one man. Today, we celebrate the contribution of strong, godly men to our community. We are men, leading the way from Good to Great! People: We celebrate men who, with the wisdom of Solomon, seek God s perfect plan for their lives and the lives they influence. Leader: We appreciate men who, with the spirit of David, seek repentance, men after God s own heart. People: We acknowledge men who, with the obedience of Abraham, follow God s direction shape the lives of their families, and ultimately change the world. Leader: We honor men who, like Peter, are fallible yet passionate about serving the Lord and fervently building his Kingdom. We are men, leading the way from Good to Great! People: As Joseph cared for his father and brothers, we care for the men of our community by generously sharing our resources, our time and our unconditional love. Leader: We pray for men who have the inner and outward strength of Samson, but have lost their way. We are men, leading the way from Good to Great! All: We re grateful for men who, like the apostle Paul, teach us Christian principles and values. Today, we celebrate men who strive in all things to be like Jesus, exhibiting his character and his love. Today, we declare and decree that as the men of St. Mary s Road we will work in our church and community, leading the way from Good to Great and to care for those whom Jesus loved and gave his life for.
